Amherst Middle School
Weekly Update - March 29, 2024
Message From the Leadership Team
Dear AMS Families,
It's obvious that Mother Nature did not get the email (text? Snap?) that spring sports started this week at Amherst Middle School. The first full week of spring brought us a snow and wind storm, power outages, and cold rain. We are hopeful that the coming weeks will bring us some more sunshine, warmer temperatures, and clear skies so that we can spend more time being active outside during and after the school day.
In other news, our 5th and 8th-grade choral groups treated us to a bonus concert in celebration of Music in Our Schools Month on Tuesday evening. For nearly 40 years, March has been designated as Music In Our Schools Month. Music has a lasting positive impact on our lives. Music brings people together, music plays an important role in the enrichment of the human spirit. The positive impact of music in the lives of our students lasts a lifetime.
Every day, in classrooms and rehearsal rooms across SAU 39, music educators dedicate themselves to reaching all students with life-changing musical experiences. We were pleased to have many members of the community, parents and family members present at this March performance to support our student musicians and watch the results of weeks and months of practice and rehearsals, and the learning process that takes place to make it all happen.
We look forward to the spring band and chorus concerts which take place in May each year and we hope to see you there as well!
Be well,
Kristen Gauthier

TEENS AND SOCIAL MEDIA
Many students in the Upper School and some in the Lower School at AMS are regularly using some form of social media–apps such as TikTok, Instagram, Discord or Snapchat. While apps like these certainly have positive uses, there has also been much written in recent years about the potential downsides of social media, especially for young developing brains. This article outlines some of those concerns and offers some helpful tips for parents on how to help their kids stay safe and healthy while using social media.

Souhegan High School Senior Projects
Maeve Allen - Rise for Alexanders Fun Run - April 14th
Where: Souhegan High School
When: April 14th at 11:00
Check-in starts at: 10:30
Come support my senior project! For my project, I am raising funds to go towards research for a rare leukodystrophy called Alexander Disease, which has affected a family member currently in the Bedford school district. Alexander Disease affects one in every 2.7 million births. Alexander Disease is a slow progressive disease which attacks a person's central nervous system. Currently, there have been 550 diagnosed cases since 1949. Sixty-three percent of the cases affect children before the age of 2 years old and most children pass away before the age of 4 or 5 years old.
Researchers are trying to find a drug to stop regression caused by the disease. The researchers rely on funds from multiple different avenues to fund their research. The United Leukodystrophy Foundation (ULF) is one of the leading organizations funding research for over 30 leukodystrophies. However, the ULF has only been able to grant $215,000 for medical research since 2015. This is not enough to support research that is needed for Alexander Disease and the other leukodystrophies.
At the fun run/walk, kids will receive a cape and bracelets as they make their laps around the Souhegan High School track.

Can’t attend the event? That’s okay! You can donate directly to the ULF (click on this link)
All registration fees and donations will be given to the United Leukodystrophy Foundation.
