February 24th, 2025 - Newsletter
Dear South Burlington High School Community,
As we move closer to Town Meeting Day on March 4th, I want to once again acknowledge the challenges and importance of this year’s school budget. Earlier this winter, the South Burlington School District Board adopted a budget of $71,507,854, developed through collaboration between our SBHS team and district leadership to balance fiscal responsibility with the resources our students and staff rely on. While many of the factors affecting school funding are determined at the state level, this budget does include reductions that will impact our students’ experience. I encourage our community to stay informed and make their voices heard by voting on March 4th.
This year, due to a state-level change, the School Article on the ballot is worded differently. It’s important to note that the increase in per-pupil education spending is not the same as the tax level increase in the proposed budget. I encourage everyone to review a sample ballot to better understand how the school budget is presented.
Additionally, I invite you to watch Mr. Burke’s message on Instagram, where he shares valuable insights about the budget. You can view it here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DGWIOqnp0xl/
Thank you for your ongoing support of SBHS and our students.
With gratitude,
John Craig
Acting Principal, South Burlington High School

News From SBHS School Counseling
This month, we celebrated National School Counseling Week! We take this opportunity to thank our incredible SBHS school counselors—Zac, Lindsey, Halina, Meghan, and Aquilas—for their unwavering support, guidance, and dedication to our students and community. From helping students navigate their academic journeys to providing social and emotional support, they make a lasting impact every single day. We are so grateful for everything they do!
School counselors have spent the past month meeting with all 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students to review course requests and make any necessary adjustments. They will now begin working on schedules for the 2025-26 school year. Every SBHS student will meet with their school counselor during February to finalize their course requests.
Earlier this month, Meghan Sweet, Director of School Counseling, shared a Prevention Newsletter developed by our SAP, Gar Smith. If you haven’t had a chance to review it, we encourage you to do so. It includes important information about the rising use of fake IDs among Vermont teenagers, this year's Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and an upcoming event on March 19 at 6:30 PM: "Talking About Drug Use and Supporting Our Community." This conversation will feature Gar Smith (SBHS Prevention Coordinator), Tom Fontana (LCMHC, LADC, UVM Alcohol, Cannabis & Other Drugs Initiatives Manager), and Kevin Grealis (VT Liquor and Lottery Investigator).
