Principal's Message
Dear Garden Road Families,
We had phenomenal results from our APEX fun run fundraiser! It makes all of the hot pink slime worth it! Thank you for all of your generous donations to support our school programs. All students benefit from these donations by receiving art and music lessons! The foundation supports our school in other ways, providing funding to each classroom on campus!
Boo Fest Trunk or Treat
Garden Road Elementary is hosting a Trunk-or-Treat Boo Fest Event on Friday, 10/25, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Bring a picnic dinner for your family (and blankets or chairs). Or take the night off from cooking and purchase pizza and snacks from the PTA onsite. This special event provides a fun and safe way for our kids to trick-or-treat with their peers, and will feature an epic costume contest, Halloween music plus tons of cool prizes and surprises.
Story Book Parade
Join us next Thursday, October 31, for the Story Book Parade! The students will parade around the track in their costumes at 8 am on Thursday! Parents and family members are welcome to line up on the blacktop to watch their child walk by with his/her class. Please join us to watch the parade!
Costume Guidelines for October 31
Students are encouraged to wear/bring a costume for the Story Book Costume parade on Thursday, October 31. Children are NOT to bring pirate hooks, swords, fake guns, knives or anything else that resembles a weapon.
Also remember that we have very young children on campus who could be frightened by very scary and gory costumes so we ask that our students not wear bloody clothes or horror masks. In adherence with our dress code, bare midriffs and high heel shoes are not allowed. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you on the morning of Thursday, October 31st for our 8:00 am parade.
Attendance Reminder: Next week is a full week of school for elementary students.
However, on Monday, October 28th our district’s middle schools and high schools have a professional growth day. We look forward to seeing our elementary students and engaging in a day of learning on October 28th.
Friday, November 1st: After reviewing district-wide data regarding attendance, the day after Halloween, there has been a pattern of increased absences. Please help our school by making attendance a priority on Friday, November 1st.
TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION - Affordable Computer Purchase Opportunity
The San Diego County Office of Education and Computers2Kids are hosting an event for families to purchase affordable computers on Saturday, November 2, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Morse High School, 6905 Skyline Drive, CA (Drive Thru Event).
See this link for details.
Since the beginning of the 2023-24 academic year, the partnership between SDCOE and Computers2Kids has provided refurbished computers to San Diego families. As of March 2024, they have provided approximately 3000 refurbished computers to over 1,300 San Diego families. We hope your families are able to benefit from this event.

Library News
We welcomed Pumpkin Jack #3 to our library this week! His arrival was celebrated with a read-aloud of the book Pumpkin Jack with the younger grades. He will stay with us for the rest of the school year & our budding scientists will observe all the changes from plump to squishy & moldy to flat in dirt and hopefully back to a sprout.
Our last year's pumpkin Jack completed the full cycle and is planted in the GRES Pumpkin patch, maintained by Girl Scouts 3rd grd troop.
The older grades learned about Frankenstein's Monster! Here are some trivia that we discussed:
Frankenstein is a novel written by a female author, Mary Shelley in 1818, when she was only 19 years old.
The first edition of the novel was published anonymously. Shelley’s name was added to the second edition of the book.
The full title of Shelley’s work is Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, and it is widely considered to be the first science fiction novel.
Mary Shelley's novel predates several significant scientific discoveries and inventions, including the theory of evolution, the first photograph, and the first electric battery.
In Mary Shelley's novel, there's no mention of Frankenstein's monster having green skin. This iconic detail was introduced in later adaptations, by Hollywood.
We will not have any Specials (Art/SEL/Library) next week, but kids are welcome to exchange their books from the library if they are done reading. Wish you a Happy Halloween and a joyful Diwali!
Regards,
Tuhina Lal

The Student Leadership Team is excited to announce their first philanthropy project of the year- a new book drive!! The Student Leadership team will be collecting new books to donate to PUSD's Youth in transition Program- a program designed to help students with unstable housing. The books will be packaged up for gifts during the holidays. The Student Leadership Team at Garden Road believes that all kids deserve new books! Please help support this project by sending in a new, unwrapped children's book with your child during the month of November.
