Key Club Makes a Difference
Last month, Key Clubbers provided babysitting at Greensferry Elementary during parent advisory, partnered with Brighter Life Foundation and Copow Foods to prepare meal kits for those in need, ran a Valentine's candy-grams fundraising campaign to help support the senior safe/sober party, and worked with Post Falls Kiwanis during Dr. Seuss Reading Day to provide our local elementary students with free books.
In March, Key Clubbers will clean up trash on Cecil Road, partner with Brighter Life Foundation and Copow Foods to prepare meal kits for those in need, run game booths at the Seusstastic Carnival at Treaty Rock Elementary, and volunteer at the Rotary Club's St. Patrick's Day event.
Key Club is a student volunteering group that meets Tuesdays after school in room 154. Any student who wants to make a difference in the community is welcome! If you have questions about Key Club or need help finding volunteers for an event, please email the advisor at cherise.hensley-jenkins@sd273.com
Life Skills
Valentine Craft
The Life Skills Students are learning their math, reading, newspapers, and mail delivering skills. We also take the time for them to learn their fine motor skills by doing arts and crafts from time to time.

Breakfast Anyone?
In Algebra 1 classes, students engaged recently with an interesting and participative exercise called the Breakfast Activity. This allowed students to work with Kathy Prummer, the Regional Math Specialist from the University of Idaho, in trying to answer this peculiar question - How many people bought a certain breakfast?
Students worked in groups as they strived to find out different ways of solving the problem. To add onto the challenge, they were asked to prepare their answer in a manner that can be explained easily to parents and younger siblings fostering a deeper understanding of math concepts.
The activity ended with a whole group discussion where students articulated the different math concepts they learned with concrete examples. It was a great way to make math fun and at the same time emphasize the importance of it in real world situations.

A Comic with a Twist: Trojan Style!

Bringing Culture to Foods II
Foods II started their Africa unit by cooking Liberian Jollof rice. Kids enjoyed the flavor and the spice! They're beginning an African Food Revival Unit that challenges them to create a non-profit organization to help alleviate hunger in their assigned country. They have to research native vegetables and grains to create a nutritious recipe as well as develop a basic business plan to convince a team of investors to choose their non-profit organization for investing.
Social Studies
Great Depression Monopoly
To better help students understand the economic struggles of the Great Depression, we played a modified version of the game Monopoly (which was created during the Great Depression). The in-class game was designed to reflect the challenges that individuals and families experienced during that time period.
Throughout the game, students experienced wage cuts, job scarcity and property loss giving them a hands-on perspective of how the Great Depression impacted everyday life. Students were able to make connections with previous lessons and discovered how easily it was to lose everything you worked hard for in your "life".
