OMS The Middle Matters
September 12, 2024
Inspiring Excellence. Every Learner. Every day.
Hello OMS Families,
It has been a great start to the school year here at OMS! It is wonderful to see our students back in the building getting used to the routines of school again. We know there is a lot of preparation and often big emotions for students at the start of the school year, thank you for all that you have done to prepare your student(s) for an awesome start.
Now that we've had a few weeks to work out the kinks with lockers and schedules we will begin to work on getting all students to their classes on time and prepared with the correct materials. It takes a bit to get used to navigating the building and lockers are often a concern, especially for new middle schoolers. Things are going well and we're ready to start moving into working on being responsible for getting around the building within our bell timeframes and putting into practice the classroom expectations students have been learning.
At OMS we use the PAW matrix to report student progress on school appropriate behaviors. Each class has been discussing what it looks like to be ready to learn and how to behave appropriately in each specific learning space. This is important because the expectations of a Phy Ed class are going to be different than in a Algebra class-- and our students deserve to have a voice in what makes each space a safe and conducive learning environment. Parents and guardians, you will see a PAW grade for each class on your student's schedule. Teachers update PAW scores regularly to keep you informed about how your student is doing on those behavioral skills that are important for future success. You will also see a 'school-wide' PAW grade that is updated by our administration team as well.
PAW stands for:
P= Prepared for Class
In each class teachers post what items students need to bring to be ready for learning. This looks different between core academic subjects and electives. Knowing ahead of time helps students remember the essentials and leave the things they don't need behind in their lockers. Understanding what materials are needed for each class helps ensure that students are able to arrive to their classes on time and ready to learn.
A= Appropriate Conduct and Respect
Our students are learning what it means to demonstrate school appropriate conduct and show respect to others. We all come from different family structures with different values. Our student population is wonderfully diverse and that means we have to learn to balance different cultural norms and find common ground. At OMS we explicitly teach our students what appropriate conduct and respect looks like, sounds like, and feels like in our space. Our goal is to create a common language and culture in our building that all students and staff use and understand.
W=Work Habits
Middle school age students are at that unique age where we can begin to hold them more accountable for their learning. This helps them to prepare for the challenges of high school and life after school. We start slowly in 6th grade teaching organization skills, task completion, cooperation, timeliness and follow through. By 8th grade we are working on those same skills at a more advanced level to really get our students set for high school success.
When you see PAW scores reported they will be in this format:
3= Consistently 80-100% of the time.
2= Often 50-79% of the time.
1= Infrequently 0-49% of the time.
PAW scores are important at OMS because they will help determine a student's eligibility for extra curricular fun events like our Activity Nights, Husky PRIDE Day and extra curricular field trips. We ask that students maintain a PAW score for Appropriate Conduct and Respect of 2 or 3 and have no suspensions from school to attend Activity Nights. Our first Activity Night is scheduled for Friday, September 27.
If you have questions about PAW scores , please don't hesitate to reach out.
Looking forward to a great year!

Pick Up & Drop Off
Parent/Guardian pick up and drop off happens at Door 13 via the staff parking lot. 15th Street is for bus parking ONLY. When you arrive to drop off your student in the morning, please pull all the way around to the furthest available space near the parking lot exit. Students can walk along the sidewalk safely to enter the building. This allows all the cars behind you to pull forward and avoid backing up in the street. When everyone stops directly in front of the door to drop off their student(s) we are blocking traffic along the road for all other vehicles.
The same process is helpful during pickup time at the end of the day. Please pull all the way around to the parking lot exit to wait. You may fill in any parking spots that are unused in the lot as well. If we all pull around and avoid waiting directly in front of the doors, the process will go much more smoothly for everyone.
Students will not be admitted into the building in the morning until the doors open at 7:35 am.
Students must be picked up by 2:30.
Chromebooks
Every student must bring their Chromebook to school every day, fully charged. This does affect students' PAW scores under Work Habits! Teachers will be using these on a daily basis; it is crucial your child brings their computer to school every day!
Having troubles with your Chromebook?
Please call the Parent/Student Technology Hotline: 507-444-8630
"AWAY FOR THE DAY"
Cell phones are "AWAY FOR THE DAY". No cellphone usage is allowed between 7:50-2:20 pm. Phones must be put away in lockers and not on their persons.
From the Parent & Student Handbook:
If a device or cell phone is seen and taken by an adult during the day, it will be turned into the office. For the first infraction, a parent must pick up the phone at the end of the day. For a second infraction, a parent/guardian will be required to pick up the phone or device from school and additional consequences may be assigned including but not limited to a Suite 360 lesson and detention. Any student who incurs three phone infractions will be required to check his/her phone into the office at the beginning of every day; the student may pick up the phone at the end of the day.
Visitors
All visitors must enter through Door #1 on 15th St NE. All visitors must have a scheduled appointment or be here under special circumstances. You will need to present a valid ID in order to enter. Please let our Campus Greeter know who your meeting is with and she will call them down to the vestibule to escort you to and from your meeting.
Preventing Class Distruption
Learning is taken very seriously at OMS; therefore, we try to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum:
- Please do not bring or arrange deliveries of bouquets, balloons, stuffed animals and the like to students. They will not be accepted.
- Encourage students to remember their Chromebooks, lunches, gym clothes, musical instruments, etc. We do not have staff to deliver these items, nor do we call the classrooms to have students come down and pick up the items.
- Make afterschool arrangements with your student before school, if possible. We do not interrupt classrooms for these types of messages.
