National Principals Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the important role that principals play in the education system. It is observed throughout the month of October each year. The purpose of National Principals Month is to honor the dedication and hard work of school principals and to show appreciation for their contributions to the success of students, schools, and communities.

Filipino American History Month in October commemorates the earliest documented evidence of Filipinos in the continental United States. The observance also celebrates Filipino heritage and the contributions of Filipino Americans.

The first Luzones Indios, or Filipino men, in the United States arrived at Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. A Spanish galleon named Nuestra Senora de Buena Esperanza carried Filipino crew members, Spanish soldiers among others. However, Filipinos immigrants would not settle in the U.S. until nearly 200 years later.

Today, Filipino-Americans are an integral part of the fabric of America. Since the first settlement in 1763, Filipinos have contributed to the development of the nation. From industry to education, government and the armed forces, Filipinos infused their heritage with that of the American Dream.

In the Northern Hemisphere, October ushers in fall like no other month. Its capital O shouts pumpkins and if the leaves haven’t turned, they soon will. Before the Julian and Gregorian calendars, October was the 8th month of the Roman calendar. Octo means eight in Latin. At the time, there were only 10 months. In 700 BC, Numa Pompilius added January and February to the calendar. This change more accurately reflected the length of a year on Earth. As a result, October became the 10th month on the calendar. While other months on the calendar have had days added and subtracted, October has always had 31 days.

During the second month of autumn, asters bloom and so do chrysanthemums. Their colors often pair well with the pumpkins and gourds collected from gardens. And speaking of pumpkins and gourds, holidays like National Pumpkin Seed Day, National Farmer’s Day, National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day, and National Pumpkin Day all offer ways to set the mood.

October Facts:

October is the month when the five-day workweek was first sanctioned. U.S. Naval Academy opened its doors in Annapolis, Maryland in 1845. Six US presidents were born in October, more than any other month: John Adams, Rutherford Hayes, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter. Most centenarians are born in the fall months. Best of all, the World Series of baseball begins in October.

Come learn about robots! Join us in the fall as we form our robotics teams for children in grades Pre K through 12th grade. Our programs teach children how to design, build, and program robots to complete various challenges in a team environment. Our programs encourage kids to explore engineering and programming while having fun!

Ages Pre K through 8th work on LEGO robots. Older children build robots from 20lbs to 125lbs!

Programs are held in Springfield, Swarthmore, and Rutledge. Co-ed and all Girl programs available!

The play area is located next to the swing sets and slides by Pavilion 8 near the equestrian stables in the park and features a dozen interactive panes and activities for smaller children to enjoy while at the park.

Sensory playgrounds provide nurturing and inclusive environments that are designed to stimulate the senses such as sight, sound, smell, touch, balance, and proprioception. Sensory playgrounds support brain development, enhanced memory, development of ability to complex tasks, and problem solving.

KeyStone Center is offering a series of free NARCAN® trainings for families.

Trainings will help families gain information on how they can assist their loved one who is struggling with opiate dependence. We will provide information on addiction treatment resources, as well as teach you how to assist someone in the event of an overdose. Each participant will receive a free NARCAN® kit.

What is Delco Contact and How Does It Work?

Delco Contact supports families that are currently trying to access mental health services in Delaware County, by connecting with them through Family Peer Specialists (FPS) and Youth Support Partners (YSP. Learning about all the treatment options and planning to access them can be overwhelming at first. In Delco Contact you will work with FPS or YSP to enroll in the appropriate mental health program that is the best fit for you and your family. Delco Contact staff are parents and youth that have navigated the mental health system in Delaware County for themselves or their families. They have experienced similar challenges and know how to overcome the barriers that can sometimes stand in the way of getting the help that you need. We are excited to join with you and your family through our shared experience.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Here are some outcomes you can expect when Delco Contact partners with your family:

• We'll support through the application process of actively enrolling in Medical Assistance if needed
• We'll teach you about all the different mental health programs that are available to Delco residents and assist you in accessing the right services for you and/or your family
• We'll focus on your strengths and family's culture to best plan for your success with the help of peer support

Media Fellowship House currently has a grant program called Delco CARES available to help homeowners in Delaware County who are behind on their mortgage and/or utilities (or who are in danger of falling behind). If you are facing this type of situation, please fill out the intake application (below) or call 610-565-0434.

This program is administered by Delaware County's Office of Housing and Community Development and is a grant of up to $6,000 that can help with up to 3 consecutive months of mortgage and/or utility payments.

1) Complete the intake application and gather the documents listed in the application. These can either be mailed to our office or brought to 302 S. Jackson Street, Media, PA 19063 from 9 to 4, Monday through Thursday (or left in our locked dropbox after hours)

2) Once the application and documents are received, our housing counselor will review them and then reach out to the applicant to review any missing information and to discuss your individual situation and strategies (in addition to applying for the grant) that could help you with the financial crisis you are experiencing.
