Message from the Principal
Message from Dr. Lennon, Principal
Welcome to the first week of school year 2024-2025!
I hope that your family has enjoyed a wonderful summer and that everyone returns feeling relaxed, recharged and ready to start the new year. Although we were unable to pull together a sneak and peek this year, we did have lots of fun welcoming our new kindergarteners and families last week. The staff and I were so impressed with the turn out and how well behaved our little owls were on their first school bus ride. We look forward to seeing all parents and guardians at our Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 26th at 6:00PM. This will be a time where our teachers will be sharing important information about your child's grade level and curriculum with a focus on collaboration between staff and families. We cannot wait for you to join us. More details will be shared in the next communicator.
This is always one of my favorite times of the year! I love the excitement of beginning each new school year and eagerly await welcoming our students and hearing their great summer stories. I’m thrilled to be part of a team comprised of teachers, staff, parents, and students who want to achieve great things!
I do want to share a few staffing updates with our families. Did you know that we had four teachers who were expecting precious babies last school year? Well, we welcomed back Mrs. Chubb, 1st grade teacher, and Mrs. Christopher, our school counselor, late last school year. However, if you have a child in second grade or third grade, two staff members have welcomed their adorable babies during the summer. Therefore, congratulations go out to Mrs. Emily Welsh, 2nd grade teacher, and Mrs. Maegen Webb, 3rd grade teacher, but they will not begin the school year teaching. I am going to leave it to the teachers to share more when they return. However, I have hired two fabulous teachers to substitute for Mrs. Welsh and Mrs. Webb while the ladies embark on the beginnings of their motherhood journey. Ms. Katelyn Crozier will be subbing for Mrs. Emily Welsh and Ms. Paula Spicher will be subbing for Mrs. Maegen Webb. Both substitutes will be sharing a welcome letter that will be sent home on Monday to their students. Every parent will receive a welcome letter from your child's teacher. In addition, Mrs. Jamie Ritter, our physical education teacher, will be out from 8/28 and possibly through the mid-year. I am in the process of hiring a long term substitute for the physical education position. Other than that, we are almost fully staffed and ready to welcome our Caln owls back to school. Please refer to our staff listing which includes all new staff hired to date.
A few very important reminders:
- School Hours: Students' instructional day begins at 9:15 am and dismissal begins at 3:45pm. During the first week of school, we expect the traffic to take longer and appreciate your patience to drive slowly and carefully in the school zone. Please remember to remain in your vehicle when dropping students off and picking students up from school.
- Main Office Hours: The main office hours are 8:30 am - 4:15 pm. Please remember that our office is extremely busy at this time of the school year. It is best to call before visiting the office and our busiest times are during the hours of 8:30 - 10:30 AM and 2:30 - 4:00 PM, especially the first week of school. Please remember that we must work together to ensure the safety of our students and that we follow all district rules and regulations pertaining to custody arrangements and such.
- Early Dismissal: A note/email should be sent in the morning to CNAttendance@casdschools.org. The note for early dismissals should contain:
Student Name/Teacher/Date and Time of Dismissal/Reason/Name of Adult picking up and relationship/Parent Signature and parent daytime phone#. It is very important to get these notes into your child's teacher or to the main office as early as possible but definitely prior to 2:00 pm.
All early dismissals should be completed at the main office by 3:15. Students must be signed out by then. Any dismissal change requests taking place after 3:15 will be in the parent pick-up line or may be declined for the safety of our students.
The adult picking up any child must bring a government issued Photo ID (preferably a driver’s license) and be listed as a parental or emergency contact.
Refillable water bottles: Caln has transitioned to bottle filling stations. Students should bring a refillable water bottle to school.
Transportation: You should have already received bus information. A nationwide bus driver shortage is impacting many districts, including Coatesville, and may lead to increased delays. Buses normally run late the first two weeks of school as students and drivers become accustomed to their routes. We appreciate your patience. Students must follow the rules of the bus, listen to the drivers and be respectful to the drivers.
Parent-Pick-Up Notes: Thank you for having patience with us as we work to make our afternoon dismissal more efficient. If your child needs to be picked up for an early dismissal or rides a school bus, please help us with this by sending a parent pick-up note into school with your child(ren) or email cnattendance@casdschools.org.
Student First Day Back-to-School Folders: Each student will be bringing home important folders which will contain important information to read (on the left-hand side) and important information to read, Sign and Return (on the right-hand side). Please be sure to return all signed paperwork by Friday, Sept., 13th.
School Calendars: Start planning ahead! This year, we have provided a Caln Events Calendar to each student (in the folders) and I will add each month's events to the weekly news. Please check out Can's website for more important information.
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS): We practice 3 important expectations at Caln: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY & SAFETY.
Our faculty and staff are looking forward to a new school year and are working hard to see that your child’s learning experience at Caln Elementary School is a successful and happy one.
Let’s have a truly wonderful first week back.
Best,
Dr. Lennon
