Community Check-In
North Rockland Central School District
North Rockland Families:
In North Rockland, we’ve returned from Spring Recess and are “thinking forward” to June! In the remaining 10 weeks of the 2022-23 academic year, our classrooms, shops, labs, studios, gymnasiums, tracks and fields are beehives of activity - with learning, growth and achievement on full display.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Kevin McCahill to our District. Dr. McCahill will be leading and helping to develop our District's innovative mental health support programs including the NR Behavior Center scheduled to open in September. We are thrilled to have a leader with his experience, passion and creativity join our family. I would also like to thank Taryn Soto, Miggy Lopez and Kleo Girandola for make this work possible by obtaining $8.7 million dollars for North Rockland via a Federal Mental Health Grant!
We encourage students to participate in the upcoming field trips, community clean-ups and families to attend our “community building” events such as wellness nights, cultural nights and orientations. Your child’s building or future building will be providing you with dates and times. Two-way communication between schools and parents/caregivers is key to the growth of children.
Next week will be a busy one for NRCSD. As a reminder ELA testing begins for grades 3-8 on April 19 - more information on the testing dates can be found down below.
It’s been rewarding to see our students enjoying and excelling at their schools with new elective options, new curriculum integration into core classes and the addition of outdoor class time - all geared towards enhancing the learning experience. Once again, our NRCSD spring athletic teams are starting their season red hot, competing and showcasing their skills, talents, drive and of course, love of victory!
Jam-packed with classroom activities, guest speakers, trips and workshops this week was an indicator of just how lively May and June will be. Phase 1 of our Capital Improvement Plan which includes new facilities, upgrades and renovations is underway. As construction progresses we will be shifting the locations of certain events at NRHS. The 2022-23 Graduation Ceremony will be held at Boulder Stadium June 21 at 6pm.
As May approaches, we are just over three weeks away from the 2022-23 School Budget Vote and Board Elections on May 16, 2023. The 2023-24 proposed budget ensures a 0% tax levy increase for a fourth consecutive year — remaining well below New York State’s property tax cap of 2%. Always mindful of the long-term interest of our school community, our fiscal plan does not include a tax levy increase for residents. Please remind your family, friends and neighbors to vote!
Thank you to all who “Rocked Red and Blue” for autism and “Stood Green and Blue” for Donate Life. Having color days where the entire school community from students to staff can come NR together to show support and spread awareness is one of the things that makes our unique culture one of inclusion and strength.
We are looking forward to a bustling spring!

It’s never too late to learn something new!
We know that it can be tricky for parents and children to find free opportunities where they can learn and grow together, especially when it comes to curriculum. One way NR is trying to help bridge this gap by hosting a variety of “community building/family nights.” Creating family learning experiences like our SEL Night hosted at Stony Point Elementary School for example - provides students and their loved ones with a place to discover and build skills alongside not only our staff but one another.
SEL Night in particular was such a success because it was packed with fun stations like: Powering Up Your Mind and Body, Spinning to Serenity, HEART Jeopardy, Doodle Train and more. The activity rotation was an important and exciting way for children to learn about themselves, their emotions, wellbeing and equipped caregivers with tools to help their children regulate. There are many more wellness nights, cultural nights, orientations and workshops tailored meet the specific needs of every learner in every school coming up now through June.
One thing that always adds that special NR Family touch to all of these events is that most of the time our high schoolers and honor society members are there to help run them. It's part of our culture to have secondary students set an example and mentor future Red Raiders NR Strong. More photos.
🔋Crank up the power!🦾
The NRHS Robotics Team - uNReal - geared up and competed at the FIRST Robotics Competition at the Armory in NYC! During the exciting and intense three day event uNReal showcased our team’s one of a kind robot and all its capabilities. Over the course of FIRST qualifiers, while NR didn’t earn the top spot, our students and Advisors, Greg Malora and Patrick Karnik enjoyed the friendly sportsmanship, exploring other teams creations, teamwork, learning and visiting the bot booths. The Red Raiders had a great time and returned ready to build more using science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation and kicks ro-butt NR Strong and NR Together! More photos.

Raider of the Week
Red Raider of the Week
Ryan Maltbie is our #REDRAIDEROFTHEWEEK for throwing a #PerfectGame this Wednesday. The #RedRaiders JV baseball team faced off against White Plains, beating the Tigers 10-0. Maltbie led things off on the mound, hurling a complete game-perfect game, retiring every batter he faced, with no opponents reaching base. The right-hander surrendered zero runs on zero hits over six innings, striking out 11, walking none and securing a strong 4-0 season start for the #RedRaiders. This is an incredibly rare and amazing accomplishment in baseball. To put it in perspective, Major League Baseball is over 140 years old and in the 235,500+ games played, there are only 23 perfect games. Let’s make some #REDANDWHITE noise for Ryan!
