Coordinator's Note
Two years ago, I was visiting a friend in Vancouver when we encountered a demonstration. Always interested, I approached the demonstration and learned about the Canadian residential schools. Residential schools were set up by religious factions to assimilate Indigenous children. Although the entire history is horrifying, it was the loss of culture and language that hit me in the gut. Residential schools have a history in the United States as well. If this is your first time hearing about this- please take some time to research and understand this not so distant history that has current world implications.
I am grateful for our RBERN team for countless reasons. Each staff member brings incredible knowledge and creativity to the table. Today, I must mention Corriander Smith. Sometimes, it takes a colleague and friend like Cori to remind you of some of the very important things in life. Her work bringing awareness of Indigenous cultures to our region and her students is incredible.
This past Monday, September 30th, was Orange Shirt Day. It is the legacy of Phyllis Webstad who tells the story of her first day at a residential school. Our office wore orange shirts and committed to global conversation of Residential Schools and the effects. We hope you will join us next year. Meanwhile, check out the work of the Indigenous Peoples Day Committee, right here in Rochester.
