MUMS Family Newsletter
March 15, 2024
Dear MUMS community,
First and foremost, thank you for all of your support last week in helping to make our dance such a success! We had many chaperones, donated food items, decorations, a photo booth and awesome music thanks to this community! The proceeds benefit the 8th grade trip, so our 8th graders thank you!
In the next week or so, our students will engage in VTCAP practice tests in preparation for our VTCAP tests which will happen the first week in April. You should have received a mailing about this already, but if not, please see the letter outlining details below.
Thanks so much for all that you do to support MUMS!
If you have questions generally, please reach out to us at mwisell@acsdvt.org (Michaela)
or zjerome@acsdvt.org (Zach) or dhunt@acsdvt.org (Dustin) or by calling the MUMS office at 802-382-1600 or by visiting the MUMS website for more information.

From our MYP Coordinators
In their recent final unit summative for 8th grade Language and Literature class, all Team 3 & 4 students created an original product that evoked suspense. This is from our “On the Edge of Our Seats” unit, where students learned different techniques artists use to impact their audience. Eve Menguc's love for graphic novels is depicted by her comic project, linked here for your enjoyment. She wanted to create a sense of anxiety for the protagonist through foreshadowing and dark imagery. Stellar job, Eve! Below is a tiny preview of what you’ll see in her work.

Dear Caregiver(s),
Again this year, the Agency of Education is implementing the Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program (VTCAP). This computer-based test is adaptive and will assess our state standards for English Language Arts (ELA), math, and science.
ACSD schools will administer these assessments this year between March 11 and April 26. These assessments include:
VTCAP Language Arts and Mathematics: Grades 3-9
VTCAP Science Assessment: Grades 5, 8, and 11
VTCAP at Our School
Tests can be administered at any time during the test window and will be administered in the school building during the typical school day. The schedule for testing Middlebury Union Middle School is as follows:
Grade: 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade
Date: April 1st, 2024 & April 2nd, 2024
Test Subject Area: ELA
Estimated Length of Test Session:170 minutes
Grade: 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade
Date: April 4th, 2024 & April 5th, 2024
Test Subject Area: Mathematics
Estimated Length of Test Session: 125 minutes
Grade: 8th
Date: April 9th, 2024 & April 10th, 2024
April 11th, 2024 & April 12th, 2024
Test Subject Area: Science
Estimated Length of Test Session: 150 minutes
Prior to testing, students will have opportunities in school to explore the Student Readiness Tool (tinyurl.com/3e3rytnb) and practice tests (tinyurl.com/4bmt3c5r). You are welcome to check these out, too.
After students have completed testing, Individual Student Reports will be sent to families in the mail. This will most likely be in fall, 2024. These reports will provide information on what your student(s) learned in relation to the statewide academic standards. It is important to consider that these tests provide a broad overview of demonstrated learning and that results are most useful when viewed in the context of other information gathered by the teacher and the school.
Please note that Vermont’s test delivery system uses state of the art security features that protect your students’ privacy and adhere to all federal and state confidentiality regulations.
If you have any questions, please contact Michaela Wisell, Principal at 802-382-1202 or ACSD’s Director of Teaching and Learning and District Test Administrator, Courtney Krahn at 802-382-1276.
Sincerely,
Michaela Wisell, Principal
Neurodiversity Celebration Week: March 18 – 22!
Next week, our schools will be celebrating neurodiversity in our community. Neurodiversity refers to the biological fact that everyone has a uniquely wired brain and their own way of thinking, learning, and experiencing the world. Learn more at https://www.neurodiversityweek.com/introduction! At MUMS specifically, we will be engaging in activities during TA next week that help students learn more about neurodiversity. Ask your child about these experiences throughout the week.
SEPAC also invites you to connect with them through the SEPAC website and join them for two upcoming events:
Neurodiversity Celebration Night
Marquis Theater Cafe (65 Main St, Middlebury)
March 20th, 5:30-7:00 pm
Shine a Light on Neurodiversity in ACSD
ACSD School Board Meeting (208 Charles Ave, Middlebury)
March 25th, 6:30pm
April 8th - Total Eclipse and Early Release Day
Remember, Monday April 8th, is an early release day due to the eclipse (this is in addition to the scheduled early release day on April 3rd). Every ACSD student will receive eclipse glasses. Visit our eclipse web page to learn more about what your students may be doing at school and activities to try at home! For eclipse-specific traffic and weather updates, VT Emergency Management is offering a text update system. Text VTECLIPSE to 888777.
Career Day At MUMS!
On the May 1st Early Release Day, MUMS will be hosting a morning of career exploration with our students. The purpose of this event is to help introduce students to the variety of careers and opportunities available to them and begin the process of planning for their lives after school. Career exploration has a variety of benefits for students including building a sense of identity, discovering their unique interests and abilities, as well as practice with goal setting.
We are looking for interested community members to help make this day a success! Would you be willing to host a session with students in which you share information about your career? Sessions will be approximately 30 minutes and should include information about what's needed to be successful at your job, what's part of your daily work, and a hands-on activity related to your career field. We are more than happy to help you design a session if you need ideas or inspiration.
Please complete this survey if you are interested in joining us!
MUMS Sports & Activities
Come out to cheer our MUMS teams on and Learn about Afterschool Clubs! Find our schedule of activities below. Also, although we don't have a skiing team, we want to remind families that there is an ACTR bus that stops at MUMS on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and goes to the Middlebury Snow Bowl and students may leave any ski/ride equipment in our lobby if that interests them.
