We were excited to welcome Catherine Boscher-Murphy, consultant from the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA), to our recent College Admissions Planning Night. The presentation provided valuable insights for families navigating the college admissions process, covering everything from financial aid to application tips. Here are the key takeaways:

Start Early with Research and Preparation

• College admissions can be a complex process, so it’s important for students and families to start early. Researching schools, understanding application deadlines, and gathering necessary documents (like transcripts and letters of recommendation) should begin as early as possible.
• College visits are encouraged! Take time to visit campuses, attend virtual college fairs, and meet with college representatives when they visit Teaneck High School.

• Financial aid plays a major role in determining which schools are affordable for students. All students should fill out the FAFSA, as many schools require it even for merit-based scholarships. In addition, the state of New Jersey has added a financial aid application completion component to its graduation requirements in order to receive a state-endorsed diploma. • While many colleges have gone test-optional, it’s still a good idea to take standardized tests like the SAT or ACT, as these scores can strengthen an application or improve scholarship eligibility.
• Colleges use a holistic approach to admissions, considering extracurricular activities, leadership roles, personal essays, and letters of recommendation. It’s important that students present a well-rounded profile, emphasizing their unique strengths.

The personal essay on the college application is crucial for several reasons:

• Showcases Personality: It allows students to present their unique voice, personality, and experiences beyond grades and test scores. This is the one part of the application where students can convey their individuality and what drives them.
• Demonstrates Writing Skills: College admissions officers assess a student's ability to write clearly, thoughtfully, and effectively. Strong writing skills are essential in college, and the essay is an indicator of a student's readiness.
• Provides Context: The essay helps admissions officers understand the applicant’s background, challenges, and triumphs. It can explain gaps, special circumstances, or significant personal achievements not captured in other parts of the application.

Immediately following the presentation, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Diaz, Mrs. Bettis and Mr. Book hosted a question-and-answer period with parents and students. At the end of the evening, school counselors answered a number of questions, offering on-the-spot advice and immediate, relevant next steps.
