THS Counselor Connection
Guiding success and growth for Teaneck High School students
Highlights from Senior Night - September 26, 2024
We were excited to welcome Catherine Boscher-Murphy, consultant from the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA), to our recent College Admissions Planning Night. The presentation provided valuable insights for families navigating the college admissions process, covering everything from financial aid to application tips. Here are the key takeaways:
Start Early with Research and Preparation
- College admissions can be a complex process, so it’s important for students and families to start early. Researching schools, understanding application deadlines, and gathering necessary documents (like transcripts and letters of recommendation) should begin as early as possible.
- College visits are encouraged! Take time to visit campuses, attend virtual college fairs, and meet with college representatives when they visit Teaneck High School.
The Importance of Financial Aid
- Financial aid plays a major role in determining which schools are affordable for students. All students should fill out the FAFSA, as many schools require it even for merit-based scholarships. In addition, the state of New Jersey has added a financial aid application completion component to its graduation requirements in order to receive a state-endorsed diploma. Additional information can be retrieved here: New Jersey Department of Education Financial Aid Application Link.
Standardized Tests and Holistic Admissions
- While many colleges have gone test-optional, it’s still a good idea to take standardized tests like the SAT or ACT, as these scores can strengthen an application or improve scholarship eligibility.
- Colleges use a holistic approach to admissions, considering extracurricular activities, leadership roles, personal essays, and letters of recommendation. It’s important that students present a well-rounded profile, emphasizing their unique strengths.
The Role of the Personal Essay
The personal essay on the college application is crucial for several reasons:
- Showcases Personality: It allows students to present their unique voice, personality, and experiences beyond grades and test scores. This is the one part of the application where students can convey their individuality and what drives them.
- Demonstrates Writing Skills: College admissions officers assess a student's ability to write clearly, thoughtfully, and effectively. Strong writing skills are essential in college, and the essay is an indicator of a student's readiness.
- Provides Context: The essay helps admissions officers understand the applicant’s background, challenges, and triumphs. It can explain gaps, special circumstances, or significant personal achievements not captured in other parts of the application.
- Reflects Critical Thinking: A well-written essay reflects the student’s ability to think deeply, reflect on experiences, and express insights in a structured way.
- Builds Connection: Colleges are looking for students who will be a good fit for their community. The essay allows admissions teams to see if the student’s values, goals, and mindset align with their institution.
Meeting Deadlines and Staying Organized
- The admissions process involves numerous deadlines for applications, financial aid forms, and scholarship opportunities. Missing a deadline can significantly impact a student’s chances, so it’s essential to stay organized and create a calendar with all important dates.
Using Naviance and Other College Resources
- Our school’s Naviance platform is a helpful tool for tracking college applications, exploring scholarship opportunities, and matching students to schools that align with their goals.
- Students and families are encouraged to use these resources to stay informed and plan effectively.
You have questions? We have answers!
Immediately following the presentation, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Diaz, Mrs. Bettis and Mr. Book hosted a question-and-answer period with parents and students. At the end of the evening, school counselors answered a number of questions, offering on-the-spot advice and immediate, relevant next steps.
Thank you to our dedicated and knowledgeable school counseling staff for their dedication and committment to the students of Teaneck. In the words of Mr. Doug Book, school counselor, "Have fun! This may be a complex time, but remember to enjoy every moment!"
Every Day Counts! Attendance Matters.
The Teaneck High School Counseling Department is deeply committed to ensuring that each student receives a high-quality education, and a crucial part of that success comes from consistent, daily attendance.
Why Attendance Matters
When students are present in school, they engage in learning that cannot be replicated outside the classroom. Each day brings new lessons, discussions, and opportunities for students to connect with their peers and teachers. Students who regularly attend school are more likely to:
Achieve Academic Success: Regular attendance ensures that students don't miss out on key concepts and foundational skills necessary for understanding more advanced material. Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, can result in significant learning gaps that are hard to overcome.
Build Stronger Social Connections: School is not just about academics; it’s also a place where students form important friendships and learn valuable social skills. These connections are essential for developing a sense of belonging and community, which can have a positive impact on mental health and motivation.
Develop Positive Habits: Consistent attendance helps students build a routine that fosters responsibility, time management, and accountability—skills that are crucial for success not only in school but in life after graduation.
At Teaneck High School, we want every student to thrive and reach their full potential. That’s why we monitor attendance closely and work with families to address any challenges that may be affecting a student’s ability to attend school regularly.
How Families Can Help
You play a key role in supporting your child’s attendance. Here are some ways you can help ensure your student is attending school consistently:
- Establish a Routine: Set a consistent bedtime and morning routine to help your child get to school on time, well-rested, and ready to learn.
- Communicate with Us: If your child is facing challenges—whether due to illness, family matters, or other concerns—please communicate with the school so we can provide support and resources.
- Set the Expectation: Talk to your child about the importance of attendance and how missing school can affect their future. Reinforce the idea that school is their “job” and being present is essential.
- Seek Support if Needed: If your child struggles with anxiety, transportation issues, or other obstacles that are affecting attendance, reach out to our counseling department. We are here to help!
Gearing Up for the College Application Process
Starting the college application process can feel overwhelming, but it's also an exciting opportunity to take the next big step toward your future. At Teaneck High School, we're here to guide you through every part of the journey. From researching colleges and exploring majors to writing personal statements and requesting recommendations, each step is important in finding the right fit for your goals. Start early, stay organized, and take advantage of the resources available to you, including your counselors and teachers. Remember, this is your journey—approach it with confidence and curiosity!

Teaneck High School is excited to offer in-person college visits, giving our students a valuable opportunity to explore their post-secondary options! These visits allow students to meet with college representatives, ask questions, and learn more about academic programs, campus life, and admissions requirements.
