Counseling Update - it's March Madness!
March can be a crazy time in the academic counseling world! Seniors begin receiving college acceptance letters, Financial Aid Offers and are knee deep in submitting Scholarship applications. It is an exciting time, filled with big decisions and continued planning. Remember, the priority deadline for applying for Financial Aid, is March 2nd. If a student missed that deadline, he/she should still apply. Also, students should keep checking Schoology for any new scholarships opportunities.
If students have any questions about acceptance letters or offers, we are happy to try to help. In addition, students applying to Sierra College should submit their applications ASAP! Two of the counselors, Mrs. Court & Mrs. Alarcon, will begin meeting with all Sierra bound seniors who completed their application and Career Assessment to help them develop an educational plan.
Lastly, if your child missed picking his/her courses with the counselor when we visited with them in the library, we are reaching out to them individually to discuss it. Our goal is to have met with all students to help them pick courses by next week.
Summer School
We don’t have details yet, but as the counselors meet with students to plan their courses, if your child needs to repeat a course, we will let them know they are being recommended for Summer School. Additional information will go out in April/May. Typically, summer school runs from mid June until sometime in July. All classes are online, but often exams need to be taken in person at Phoenix High School. Summer School is a great opportunity for your child to make up a course without the pressure of 8 other courses. We strongly recommend that your child takes advantage of this opportunity if it is being offered to them.
College & Career Update!
The College and Career Center started a busy month, ending with FAFSA/CADAA and scholarship assistance to our students. We hope that many of our students qualify for free money from California upon completing FAFSA/CADAA. If they still haven't completed one, we highly encourage them to do so. We are also hoping our scholarship donors have a hard time selecting from the many applicants they received.
Next up is our Career Fair on March 21st, from 8:30am-12:30pm. Our goal is to expose our students to a variety of different industry sectors, businesses, internship and apprenticeship programs, allowing them to make successful post-secondary plans. We want our students to learn about all the career possibilities they can pursue, the education required and the potential salary earnings. There will also be two panel sessions the students can sign up for, “How to Start Your Own Business” and “How to Land Your Dream Job: What Employers are Looking For” We encourage your students to stop by, participate and interact. More information will be shared with them as the day approaches.
Wellness Center Update!
As we say goodbye to February, I wanted to take a moment to recap what we have been working on in the Wellness Center. In February, we were able to provide 16 in-class presentations to students on safe and healthy relationships. HUGE thank you to our freshman English Dept who incorporated the topic of healthy relationships into their Romeo and Juliet curriculum. We are so thankful for these ongoing collaboration opportunities and look forward to more.
We have provided a safe space to students over 200 times this month and hope to continue to expand and reach more students.
March Mental Health Focus: Social Media's Impact on Mental Health
As we move into March, we will transition into talking about the effects of social media on mental health. Social media is a powerful tool that has helped remove stigma from many aspects of mental health conditions and treatment. However, we know that unfettered access to social media comes with negative outcomes as well. The CDC recently released its Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary & Trends Report and the results of some teen behavior is troubling.
In 2021, 16% of high school students were electronically bullied, including through texting, Instagram, Facebook, or other social media. Female students were more likely than male students to be electronically bullied. American Indian or Alaska Native and White students were more likely than students from most other racial and ethnic groups to be electronically bullied. LGBQ+ students and students who had any same-sex partners were more likely than their peers to be electronically bullied. (Source)
When highly susceptible adolescents used social media to interact with peers in the last hour, they felt less socially connected to others and more strongly craved social connections and novel sensations. Youth who are particularly sensitive to social input from peers may feel less connected to others and crave more connections and exciting stimuli within 1 hr after using social media to interact with peers. (source)
For further reading on the impact of social media on youth mental health, here is testimony given on Feb 14th of 2023, to our Senate by Mitch Prinstein, PhD, ABPP, and Chief Science Officer of the American Psychological Association.
The Wellness Center will be stationing ourselves in the quad during the lunch hour several times in March (gloomy weather permitting) with our spinning wheel and spreading the word to our campus about the impact on social media on mental health topics. We will also be doing a greater push on our social media account by sharing online safety tips.
