ATP is the Place to Be!
We can't believe it's already October, but what a great start to the school year thus far! We have been busy at ATP getting out into the community safely to experience our Community Based Instruction, setting up the ATP Café, opening up the Food Pantry and preparing for the launch of our donation based Thrift Store. So many moving parts and it's all because our students and staff work so hard together to accomplish progress toward our transition goals.
Below you'll find the latest news and events happening at ATP in October!

Community Based Instruction: Brooks Street Pool
As part of the adult transition program, we strive to provide opportunities for our adult students to participate in independent living/recreational activities. These independent living skills tie into students’ Individual Transition Plans, as well as IEP goals. Students from each classroom are participating in a 4-week swim class that started on September 22nd at Brooks Street Pool. The program is each Wednesday from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM.
Students receive instruction on swimming basics, as well as water safety. Students learn how to behave appropriately at a swimming pool (examples: no running, listening to the lifeguards and using a locker room to get changed and ready for their next activity of the day). These skills generalize across various areas of their lives, including living an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as getting ready and being prepared for an activity.
Students are exposed to a lifelong physical fitness activity that is both low impact and therapeutic. Along with social skills learned while in the swimming pool, students also work on their travel skills in the community to get to and from the pool.
Aside from the independent living skills being targeted by ATP staff, the swimming pool is a fun activity for many of our students. The smiles on their faces while at the pool tell the entire story! (Jeffrey Laird - ATP Teacher)
