South Dakota State Assessment Dates
Dear Parents and Guardians,
State testing at Hermosa School for students in grades 3-8 will begin on April 1st. These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth. We appreciate your support in helping them do their best!
Here are some ways you can help your child be successful during testing:
✅ Ensure a Good Night’s Sleep – Make sure your child gets plenty of rest before each testing day.
✅ Provide a Healthy Breakfast – A nutritious meal helps with focus and energy.
✅ Arrive on Time – Being at school on time reduces stress and ensures your child doesn’t miss important instructions.
✅ Encourage a Positive Attitude – Remind your child to try their best and not to worry. A calm, confident mindset makes a difference!
✅ Avoid Scheduling Appointments – If possible, please schedule any doctor or dentist visits outside of testing hours.
Thank you for your partnership in making this a successful testing period for all our students. You can find the testing schedule below and all tests begin in the morning after breakfast is served. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Happy Thursday!
This week, we concluded our State Assessment talk with students in 3rd - 8th grades. Middle School will start the State Assessment next week. Third graders are a little nervous as this is their first year, but the most important thing to remember is to take one's time and try their best. Students are encouraged to get a good night's rest, a healthy breakfast, and to do something fun to treat themselves after each assessment as they earned it!
This week in Middle School, 7th graders saved Sam- a group challenge where they must collaborate to get a life saver around a gummy worm using only paper clips. This is a fun activity that helps to highlight the importance of group work. Working with one or more people helps us share ideas and can make big tasks seem smaller as we share the workload. The 8th graders were split into small groups and played an extreme game of catch. Students had to keep the order they were throwing as more and more balls were added to the game. This activity is a metaphor for all the things 8th graders have on their plates: family, chores, school, homework, friends, sleep/self-care, fun, sports, extracurricular activities, etc. When we have a lot on our plate, sometimes things conflict with one another, or we let some things drop. In our busy moments, we must slow down, plan, and prioritize.
Next week, we will continue learning about mindfulness with elementary students as we understand what it means to be a mindful listener and how listening helps us pay better attention to our surroundings.
