Laerskool Sabie Primary
July 2022
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students, and enthusiastic parents.
The parent:
Teacher trust and mutual understanding and respect is a real secret to a child’s optimal development. A balance of education at home and school molds a student's actual learning. A good parent teacher relation leads the child to be positive towards attending school.
Teachers and parents provide a vital support system to help students flourish. Parents are a child’s first role models; they have a key role in shaping their character. Children tend to imitate their parents and behave in a comparable manner. If you want excellence…model excellence!
Teacher:
A teacher is a child’s first “friend” from whom he/she learns his/her social skills, in addition to educational training.
Let’s be role models in shaping our children’s bright future. It is only through close collaboration and partnership that we can achieve our goal of producing responsible world leaders and sensible global citizens of the imminent future.

ACADEMIC
Our learner’s academic performance is a big concern. Not only did learners lose a lot of academic time during Covid, but they have also regressed in basic skills needed to excel in school. Extra reading and math classes will not help if the following issues are not addressed.

DISCIPLINE ISSUES:
Discipline issues cause distractions, and distractions add up and limit learning time. Every time a teacher must handle a discipline issue, they lose valuable instructional time. In addition, each time a student is sent to the office on a discipline referral, that student loses valuable instructional time.
Discipline starts at home! What are you allowing in your home? That is what the child will bring to school. For this reason, parents will receive an SMS informing you when a child’s behaviour is disruptive and affects other learner’s instructional time. The learner will also be delt with according to the school’s discipline

LACK OF STUDENT MOTIVATION
Many students simply do not care about attending school or putting in the effort necessary to maintain their grades. It is extremely frustrating to have a pool of students who are only there because they must be; insufficient preparation for teste, homework not being done; tasks not handed in, classwork not finished; no books at school est. This goes hand in hand with discipline and these learners are usually the learners that disrupt other learners.
A teacher can only do so much to motivate a student: It is up to the student to decide whether to change. Unfortunately, there are many students in school with tremendous potential who choose not to live up to that standard. Learners not finishing homework, classwork or tasks will be notified in writing the date and subject teacher where they will have to finish their work after school (13h30 -14h30)
Please log into your Class DoJo app to monitor your child’s progress as well as discipline.

Class DoJo
Should your child earn more than -20 marks on Class DoJo, he/she will qualify for detention. Luckily, the learner can work away from these negative marks with continuous good behaviour. We promote positive behaviour at school. Contact Me. Melizka Smith at melizka@laerskoolsabie.co.za or the class teacher if you require any help with the Class DoJo App.
Secret Sound Competition
I had a lot of queries regarding the SECRET SOUND competition. Let me explain.
1. I have shared three sounds via WhatsApp previously. All sounds are sounds found at school (inside or outside)
2. Each child received a list where entries are done.
3. On this list you must print your name and the answer you guessed for Sound 1, 2 or 3.
4. You can guess only one or two or three sounds. There is no limit to the number of times you want to guess - in fact the more you guess the bigger your chance of winning.
5. Each guest cost R10.
6. Please assist your child with the money received by sending it to school as soon as possible.
7. Remember a fee of R150 is payable for any lost SECRET SOUND forms.
8. The competition runs over the holiday for you to get as many friends and family as possible to guess the SECRET SOUND.
9. Each sound is connected to a prize: Toboggan ride for four or Pep Voucher worth R1000 or a Picknick for a family at the Sabie Horse Trails.
10. Winners will be announced on 29 July. If there is more than one correct answer, the names will become part of a lucky draw.
TIME TABLE
Your child will receive a new timetable. We will follow a ten-day timetable. Learners will have 6 periods per day. With this we hope to make the weight of the suitcases a bit lighter while still sticking to the norm times as prescribed by the Department. Assist your child to bring the correct books to school every day.
Each day will start at 07h20 with a register period and then at 07h40 the academic program will commence.
ASSESSMENT
There is no exam this term. Assessment will take place continuously in the form of tests, class assessments and tasks. You will soon receive information regarding the scheduling of tests and assessment.
FINANCES
LUCKY DRAW
To say thank you to parents that pays their school fees regularly, there will be a monthly lucky draw. By paying your school fees you automatically stand a chance to win a prize! Our first winner was: Me Pamela White – Thank you!

School Fees
Funding has a significant impact on a student’s academic performance. A lack of funding typically leads to larger class sizes as well as less technology and curriculum materials, and the more students a teacher has, the less attention they can pay to individual students.
Teachers must be equipped with engaging tools covering the standards they are required to teach. Technology is a tremendous academic tool, but it is also pricey to purchase, maintain, and upgrade. The same goes for textbooks and other material.

How is a school funded?
Our school does not get funding from the state to run the budget. Therefore, the school must generate their own funding.
1. School Fees
Although it is the law to pay school fees, it is also the parent’s responsibility and pride to ensure your child’s future by paying school fees.
ROBOTICS ANC CODING.
This course begins with an introduction to basic computer skills. Once learners have gained a basic knowledge of computer skills and their fundamental components such as the internet and e-communications, the learners will then progress to an introductory course on MakeCode. This platform will provide the learners with the opportunity to create interactive and engaging programming experiences as first-time members of the world of programming. Possessing this knowledge and skills will form a foundation for a tailored experience enabling learners to create and run user programs on stimulated targets such as the Micro:Bit and Micro:Bit car.
Learners will explore the following concepts:
- Scratch Coding
- Micro:bit Board
- Micro:bit Car
- Learn how to use the Micro:bit to control a car built using DC motors, ultrasonic sensors and other peripheral devices.
- Use the Micro:bit car to play music, follow a line or to avoid obstacles on its course.
Control the movement of your Micro:bit Car with a remote.
EXTRA CURRICULAR PROGRAM
To be able to host an extracurricular program again after almost two years was a great privilege. Let's recap all the activities that took place at the school over the past term.
RUGBY EN NETBALL
We not only hosted a successful rugby-and netball day, but performed exceptionally well during friendly matches.
Just to mention that our U/13 and U/9 rugby teams both came 3rd in the Mpumalanga Rugby Championships for Small Schools.
Although the emphasis is not on rugby this term, a smaller group will continue to train to be ready for the the sevens rugby season kicking off in the fourth term.
The Mini netball and “bulletjie” rugby performed outstanding and participated in various tournaments.
CROSS COUNTRY
Some of our cross-country athletes also participated in the Club Cross Country events under the training of Mr. Marco J.v. Rensburg where they made us proud.
We also hosted the annual cycling/cross-country day for our learners, and it was once again a great success enjoyed by all.
OTHER
There were also various activities such as the arm-wrestling competition, the Spelling-B competition, 150 days-of-school. Thank you to everyone who has helped with coaching, organizing and support.
