The Generosity of Lake Shore
The entire Lake Shore community rallied to make the holidays brighter for our Shorian families! 270 children will find packages under their tree and a holiday meal on their table. Business members, alumni, civic groups, staff, and anonymous donors purchased gifts, gift cards, winter gear and grocery items for students and families that may have gone without this holiday season.
Our own National Junior Honor Society students from Kennedy Middle School steps up every year to bring cheer to others. Led by Advisors Bob Plotkowski and Abbey Gough, this team of middle school students secured $8,902.90 cash donations and decided every penny of it would serve Lighthouse Outreach in Roseville and the Shorian Nation's Adopt-a-Family list. With assistance from Clippers staff, KMS was able to help 70 families! Eighth grader and NJHS Treasurer Brooklyn Berry assisted with the shopping.
Clippers battled it out for two weeks. They brought in can money, birthday money, loose change, family donations, money they raised going door to door in their neighborhoods, and more. Here are the Top Five classes:
- Mrs. Gough: $3,816.33
- Ms. Fox: $3,647.74
- Mrs. Morell: $384.61
- Mrs. Barnett: $ 298.91
- Mrs. Bailey: $258.21
The students love the competition, but this is all about giving back to the community. It is incredible to see middle schoolers step outside of their bubble and put others needs before themselves. We are so proud of all of our students for their generosity and support. Ms. Fox said, "I'm incredibly proud of our students and community for coming together to make such a meaningful impact. While we might not have taken the crown from Mrs. Gough this time, the true victory is in the generosity and kindness we’ve shown. Together, we’ve achieved something to be proud of—and that’s what matters most."
Principal Mr. Johnson at Kennedy Middle School got vulnerable in front of Clippers at an assembly, sharing his own Christmas story & applauds students for adopting 70 families: https://x.com/myLSPS/status/1867587100746691029

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. Note: We have made a few changes to this calendar; All adjustments are located on our District Events Calendar.
This calendar outlines all 24 character strengths, 1 highlighted per week. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.

People with the character strength of supporting others when they struggle means that when they see other people struggle, they help them if they can.
The St. Clair Shores Goodfellows are a local group of volunteers who try to fulfill our mission of “No Kiddie without a Christmas” with their Annual Newspaper Sale.
Lake Shore staff, stationed at city intersections, sold their annual edition of The Goodfellows Newspaper for donations. With the money collected from the newspaper sale, they purchase food and gift cards.
A cup of hot chocolate, cider, or tea may be the perfect pick-me-up to start the day. At the traveling Violet Cafe, students deliver free monthly beverages to staff under the supervision of Speech Teacher Ms. Boris and Resource Room Teacher Ms. Gray. This is a sponsorship provided by their PTO, offered to students who continue to work on communications for the past two years.
Speech Teacher Mrs. Giorlando said, "The coffee cart has been an awesome way for our students to work on their social language skills and to carry over their good speech sounds, into spontaneous conversation with others! And I look forward to some much needed extra coffee and a treat! Seeing how proud our kids are to do this for their favorite teachers & staff makes me smile. It's been a great addition to our mornings at Violet."

People with the character strength of self control have the ability to control their emotions and behaviors. They think before they act.
Our elementary students participate in Santa's Shop, a place where students shop without their parents, for their family and friends. There's a lot to choose from and it can be dangerous to resist temptation to buy everything. That's where self control comes in.
Third grader Carter Smith from Violet Elementary enjoyed Santa Shop last week. He admitted, "Giving gifts makes everyone happy." When he first walked into the "shop" he was surprised by the amount of present offerings. It was probably tough not to buy everything. Mom and Santa Shop Volunteer Ms. Lisa chimed, "He had to use self-control not to buy himself everything." Carter carefully selected a massager for his 6-year-old brother Cayden, an upgraded version of the back scratcher that he currently owns. Mom cannot wait to see what Carter selected for under their tree.
Thank you to the parent volunteers who keep our tables fully stocked with presents, price each item, wrap them with care, and ensure a smooth check out process.
We've spent hours finding the best Shorian gifts for family and friends and researching the best gear for your upcoming holiday parties. All of the best holiday gift ideas for 2024 can be purchased inside Lake Shore High School's Shorian Shop: https://www.facebook.com/myLSPS/posts/pfbid02Vy1FLFeriBFKWVYQGHs7xKzTxdcowvAkn5L9Ho6pakBzScNLB5DMJR8G1NJLdgFvl
Bonus: Earlier this month, Miss St. Clair Shores Grace Hanke visited Violet Elementary to read a holiday story with Mrs. Whisman's class. As she walked through the hallways on her way out, she was greeted by both students and staff who couldn't control their enthusiasm for meeting this local celebrity and LSHS Class of 2024 graduate! OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
Featured Soloist Alexis Gress
Whether you're in a concert band, marching band, or jazz ensemble, playing in a high school band offers a chance to develop your musical skills, build friendships, and be part of something bigger. And a big opportunity has been awarded to Alexis Gress.
Senior Alexis is the featured soloist in a concerto at our Winter Concert playing The Trumpeter's Lullaby.
She began playing the trumpet in 6th grade, but it wasn't until two years later when she decided to make music her profession. In fact, through repetition she has developed the skill and fell in love with the band and her instrument. This is why she has made it a goal to go into Music Education at the University of Michigan and become a teacher.
Between high school band and her participation in the Michigan Youth Ensemble, she logs roughly 4-10 hours of practice. Band, Jazz Band, Brass Ensemble are all part of her daily grind. She inspires her younger brothers Kindergartener Austin and 2nd grader Caleb to work hard and find their own passion.
There's also those who inspire her. Mom Angela is the Treasurer of Band Boosters. She said, "She's at everything, my support system, and an awesome person." She went on to credit Band Director Mr. Alter for helping her discover her own confidence. "I can be very critical of myself, but Mr. Alter reminds me that everything will be okay."
In Alexis' free time, she enjoys listening to country music and even enjoyed Zach Bryan's concert this past Summer. She is the President of Lake Shore High School's National Honor Society and Public Relations of Student Congress. But if she's being completely honest with herself, her favorite things to do to pass what little free time she has are updating band events in the class calendar and serving as a leader for her peers.
The Reptarium Visits
The Reptarium, Michigan's Favorite Reptile Zoo, brought their collection of animal ambassadors - snakes, alligators, tortoises, lizards, geckos, and more to Rodgers Elementary as a way end their Core Knowledge Language Arts unit about animals.
Rockets joined Animal Ambassadors Jordan and Alexa for a hands-on experience with reptiles, arachnids, and amphibians. Students were able to learn about bearded dragons, blue tonged skink, a red footed tortoise, a cane toad, a tegu, and burmese pythons.
Some students were afraid, at first, but warmed up to the petting zoo animals rather quickly. They laughed at their fun animal names of Oreo, Bubbles, Tater Tot, Clementine, Chili Pepper, Uno, and Olaf.
Third grader Evelyn Jeffers voluntarily held a "scary snake". Her facial expressions were priceless as she tried to stay calm and contain her animal-loving excitement.
While students interacted, Jordan explained general facts about the animals. "Snakes have 400 bones. Keep your fingers or "baby carrots" away from tortoises as they eat anything. Toads do not have teeth and catch prey with their sticky tongues." These interesting pieces of information had everyone engaged and informed.
Learn more about The Reptarium by visiting their website at https://thereptarium.com/.
Wax Museum
Be yourself; Everyone else is taken.
We wanted to highlight our Wax Museum at Masonic Heights Elementary, an exhibition of wax dummies, typically representing famous people and fictional characters, to the community. We are forever fans of these current and historical people and these incredible 4th graders.
Requirements were similar for the research and speech portions which included the name of person, date of birth, place of birth, and date of death if passed on, a famous quote, family and childhood information, major accomplishments, and interesting information.
Students presented their biographical speeches to a live audience, sharing their research and wardrobe in-person.
There was a beautiful variety of people including Milton Hershey, Tarik Skubal, George Washington, Sally Ride, and Dr. Seuss. We enjoyed listening to Adrien Holmes and Madison Kurdi share fun facts about the selections of LeBron James and Amelia Earhart.
Adrien's love for watching basketball made LeBron an easy choice as he is the NBA's all-time leading scorer, but this wasn't the #1 reason why he looks up to LeBron. LeBron James Family Foundation supports the I Promise School aimed at at-risk kids. Adrien explained, "I like that he helps others."
Madison was impressed by American aviator Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world. Madison has been on a plane one time to travel to Florida and really enjoyed her time in the sky. She said, "I got to see the world through the plane's window. It was really cool."
We adore how Adrien and Madison's interests influenced their Wax Museum projects!
Innovation
Holiday Readings
It's not about having time. It's about making time. Sometimes giving isn't about the gift of things, but simply the gift of your presence.
Strong reading skills are a critical component of future success. The foundation we build in our elementary core reading instruction prepares students for success in college and career. Our district strives to assist all students with their development of essential reading skills through a process that builds independent readers and effective communicators.
Mrs. Gough, Mrs. Bailey, Mrs. Seiberling, Mr. Winters, Mrs. Radlick, Mrs. Chauvin, Mr. Kelley, Mrs. Blaszkowski, and Mrs. Stuckey's students from Kennedy Middle School and Lake Shore High School sleighed their way over to the Lake Shore Early Childhood Center, Masonic Heights Elementary, Rodgers Elementary, and Violet Elementary. Why? To read their favorite holiday stories and spread the season's cheer!
Our secondary students enjoyed the chance to reminisce on their time in elementary. Thank you to Preschool 4 and GSRP, Ms. Post, Mrs. Kiefer, Ms. Domagalski, Mrs. Courtemanche, Mrs. Manor, Mrs. Wiseman, Ms. Whisman, Ms. Lynch, and Mrs. Salem’s classes across the district for being such good boys and girls!
The 1st grade students were able to enjoy some of their favorite books! One student, Senior Alfredo Caicedo, enjoyed reading to a small group of three boys at Masonic Heights Elementary. "It was such a cool experience to be able to read with kids. I read to my little sister Emma, a current 5th grader at Violet Elementary. I also served as a 6th grade Camp Counselor." The high school and elementary students were all able to enjoy wonderful holiday stories together.
Once finished, students wrote the book titles on a chain to track all of the reading they were able to collectively accomplish! This impressive chain will remain as a permanent decorative fixture inside our LSECC!
A special thank you to District Elementary Librarian Mrs. Kraus for assisting with the organization of this annual event. We also appreciate Miss Saint Clair Shores and LSHS 2024 graduate Grace Hanke, Superintendent Dr. DiPonio, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lewis, and Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Stephenson for serving as guest holiday readers for our buildings!
Adventures Across the Globe
In Mrs. Coffey's World Geography class at Kennedy Middle School, 6th graders are locating countries north and south of the Equator, naming bodies of water, finding cities inside states, learning more about countries, cities, and regions using a globe and allowing the Five Themes of Geography to guide them.
An advantage of using a globe is that it looks more like Earth, since both are round. A globe shows the student exactly how continents and oceans appear on Earth's curved surface. A globe also shows the true shapes, locations, and relative sizes of Earth's landforms and bodies of water.
Field trips provide authentic, hands-on experiential learning opportunities where students can connect what they are learning in the classroom in a real world context.
German students from Ms. Parenteau's class at Lake Shore High School went on their annual Frankenmuth field trip. They got into the holiday spirit by shopping at Bronner's and the River Place Shops and learned the history of and how-to make their very own pretzels.
Earlier in the month, these German students participated in a Potluck Taste Test and earned extra credit awards for the best savory dish, best dessert, best looking dish and biggest disaster. Dishes included Apfelstudel, Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Potato salad, Sunken apple cake, Spätzle, and Almond cookies! How fun!
Parker Pojeta made his own savory pretzel. He said, "My family and friends thought it was tasty. It wasn't my first time attempting to bake, but it was my initial attempt at a pretzel. The multi-step process and wait time were the toughest parts."
In addition, students participated in Nikolaustag, receiving sweets and little presents from St. Nikolaus AKA Mrs. Parenteau, inside their shoes!
There will soon be a big reveal of the exchange student they get assigned to for their Germany trip; Fifteen students will be visiting in late March! We love that our students are filling their lives with adventures across the globe.

Lake Shore Early Childhood Center Celebrates 4 Year Anniversary
Congratulations Kelly Biondo, Early Childhood Coordinator, and her team of dedicated staff. It takes a big heart to help shape little minds and we are so impressed by the growth in all aspects.
The future of humanity lies in hands of early childhood care and our littlest learners have us all wrapped around their tiny fingers.
Our Lake Shore Early Childhood Center, formally known as Shores Child Care, is the place to enroll your littlest learners.
Let Your Child's Career with Lake Shore Begin with Us is the slogan we like to use as we welcome families to our newly renovated childcare facility.
LSECC Coordinator Kelly Biondo reflected, "I am incredibly proud of the ECC and its remarkable staff. Their unwavering dedication, boundless passion, and tireless efforts inspire me every day. Their commitment to excellence and their ability to create a nurturing environment truly make it an honor to be a part of this team. Going to work each day is a joy because of the shared sense of purpose, the collaborative spirit, and the genuine care that radiates throughout our work. Together, we make a difference, and that is something truly worth looking forward to."
Upon entry, visitors feel connected to Lake Shore Public Schools and Saint Clair Shores because of the nautical themes in both the soft shades of blue color scheme, artifacts such as a piece of drift wood found in Whitefish Pointe, and thematic room names. This reflects the local city lifestyle and honors the schools inside Shorian Nation.
For example, the room names are as follows:
- Infant room: Mini Clippers
- Transition/Young Toddler room: Shorianettes
- Toddler room: Maritime Mates
- 3-year-old Preschool room: Saint Clair Skippers
- 4-year-old Preschool room: Junior Mariners
In addition, we have partnered with BrightWheel, a software company that makes daily recording keeping for childcare centers quick and easy, to bring our record keeping up into the 21st century. Most importantly, we are implementing High Scope curriculum, which includes developmentally appropriate goals and objectives for children within four main categories of interest: social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language, to improve the quality of instruction.
Our Lake Shore Early Childhood Center consistently receive a quality rating from Great Start to Quality, Michigan's quality rating and improvement system for child care and preschool, preparing children to succeed in school and in life. Great Start to Quality rates the level of quality of all licensed and registered child care and preschool programs in Michigan.
"Making sure we provide children in our care with the best experience possible, is not only our job, it's our privilege," said Kelly Biondo, Early Childhood Coordinator. "By participating in Great Start to Quality we earn recognition for our hard work. We also get ongoing support and training so we can keep improving the quality of care we provide."
Choir Tour Day
We are featuring the magic of the holiday season that can be seen by the twinkle in our Shorian Nation choirs.
Recruiting elementary and middle school students for Lake Shore High School choir with a Choir Tour Day was our mission today. Every child who wants to learn music should get the experience and Lake Shore offers robust programs.
Students need to be shown choir, told about its activities and benefits, and convinced that music is an option for them by giving the kids a chance to see it in action while witnessing performances. By listening to musicians sing popular songs in front of a live audience, everyone was able to learn more about these exciting exploratory classes.
Senior Lauren Maciejewski loved being a part of the day. She commented, "Doing the choir tour means so much to me because this is something that I have been wanting to do since I was in kindergarten. The reason why I joined choir was to do what I am doing right now, touring the different elementary schools and hopefully encouraging more students to join choir. Singing and performing during this time feels like Christmas to me."
Fusion students Tatum Anderson, Sara Milligan, and Brielle Starks' siblings from Kennedy Middle School were in attendance. Anthony (6th), Liam (6th), and Kaleb (7th)'s eyes watched their sister's every move and ears listened to every song. They were able to make a special trip to the floor to give their family a hug!
We enjoyed a few holiday songs from the assemblies:
In addition, these Choir students made a special stop at American House to share their voices with residents. Our encore choir performance at American House was a huge hit.
Life Enrichment Coordinator, Rae Smith, reflected on what these performances have meant to her residents. "It is just so special! The residents really look forward to seeing the kids and being able to singalong to the Christmas classics! It is both exciting and nostalgic," she said.
For the first time, our Lake Shore Early Childhood Center 3-year-olds also participated in a visit to American House to sing. Their voices were an incredible addition to this magical day!
Lake Shore Public Schools finds creative ways to connect with American House every year. From trick-or-treating on Halloween and participating in Bingo on 100s Day to caroling around the holidays and asking for life advice from Seniors, our students continue to build relationships with our elderly friends.
Lake Shore Night at Tunnel of Lights
Our Lake Shore Night at Blossom Heath's Tunnel of Lights was a success thanks to the attendance of our students, families, and community. We enjoyed listening to our students from Masonic Heights Elementary, Violet Elementary, and Rodgers Elementary perform, visiting with our mascots, and sharing wishes for the new year.
Music Teacher of 30 years, 22 at Lake Shore, Mrs. Rueger-West invited her 3rd grade students from Violet Elementary to sing at this event for the past few years. She shared, "I am so proud and grateful to be the music teacher at Violet Elementary. This school is full of amazing students and teachers. I am so lucky to get to work in such a special place and I'm thankful to the city for letting us return yearly to Tunnel of Lights. My students really look forward to performing there!"
Music Teacher Bernadette Wischmeyer is in her 25th year of teaching and joined the district with Mrs. Rueger-West in 2003. She said, "It's been an amazing 21 years together of collaboration, growth and friendship. Mrs. Toma has been a great addition to the team!" Like Mrs. Rueger-West, she appreciates this special opportunity. "Masonic Heights is honored to join Violet's tradition of performing at the Tunnel of Lights. It's festive and fun to perform outdoors and a great opportunity for families to make memories."
The Masonic Melodies, their school choir of 68 4th and 5th graders, performed 9 songs they also shared at The Fox Theatre on November 24th:
- Welcome Christmas
- This Little Holiday Light of Mine
- Santa Claus is Coming to Town
- Christmas Time Is Here
- Up on the Housetop/Hey You!
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
- Nice, Nice Christmas
- Shalom Chaverim
- We Wish You a Merry Christmas
Grandma Jean's only wish for her 80ish birthday was to celebrate with 5th grader Delilah Maxon from Masonic Heights at this event. This 5th grader's voice makes every single day special.
Bonus: Thanks for visiting our LSPS table & sharing your wishes for the new year with us! We're creating a display and will highlight them in 2025! We appreciate our LSHS National Honor Society students for running the table, wearing the mascot costumes, and delivering first-class hospitality.
Holiday Celebrations
It's the most wonderful time of the year!
Our Santa Breakfast, held at Violet Elementary, gave our families the opportunity to spend quality time with their Kindergarten sons and daughters. There was singing, visits from Santa, and a meal prepared by our own Food Service Department. This was a reminder that the memories we make with our family throughout the year is everything: https://x.com/myLSPS/status/1870147490067906857
Second grader Savannah Barthel shared a special performance in front of brother and Kindergartener Colton as her Grandmother Tracey and Mom Brandy cheered her on. Savannah comes from a family of singers and they couldn't be more proud of her.
In addition, our Early Childhood Center hosted a Polar Express Day and ESL held a celebration, too. So much yummy food & movie-inspired entertainment!
Our littlest learners had their tickets punched by Conductor and LSECC Coordinator Kelly Biondo, watched the movie, and were surprised with bells in their coat pockets. Just like the young boy in the movie who embarked on a magical adventure to the North Pole on the Polar Express, our students learned about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas: https://x.com/myLSPS/status/1870141297463333186
Lake Shore's Adult and Community Education ESL program makes a meaningful impact by empowering adults to improve their English skills, connect with others, and embrace new opportunities. Athletes of the Week
William Young
Congratulations to AOTW William Young, member of the Varsity Boys' Hockey team at Lake Shore High School. Coach Radjewski shared his contributions with us:
"Will went 1-1 in our two starts with a goals against average of 3.00 and save percentage of .919. Will best anchor bay on opening night, and played outstanding in our loss to De La Salle in game 2."
Teagan Klott
Congratulations to AOTW Teagan Klott, member of the Varsity Girls' Bowling team at Lake Shore High School. Coach Villasurda shared her contributions with us:
"A first year varsity bowler, Teagan has improved a ton. She always brings a positive attitude and is a great teammate. She takes to coaching well which is what every coach wants. She is also a tremendous student. Teagan is a huge asset to the Lake Shore bowling team. In Teagan’s very first varsity event, she helped her team win the Richard Hochstein Memorial Scholarship Invitational. Teagan made some very clutch shots when her team needed it most."
Lyla Card
Congratulations to AOTW Lyla Card, member of the Varsity Competitive Cheer team at Lake Shore High School. Coach Taormina shared her contributions with us:
"Lyla came to us this summer after moving from California. She has proven herself to be an incredibly driven and hard working athlete. Beginning part way through the fall season, she started on our junior varsity team to become acclimated to the program. What a powerhouse base and tumbler! Lyla came out for competitive tryouts and completely wowed us with new skills and has earned her way into all three varsity competitive rounds this season. So many kids shy away from putting in hard work to achieve their goals--but not Lyla. Her passion shines through all that she does. Hard work pays off and we are so happy to have her in our program and on our team!"
