Mission Statement
At Amidon-Bowen Elementary School, students will be accepted, appreciated, nurtured, and challenged according to their individual needs. Through their education at school, students will gain the skills, strategies, and desire necessary for continued learning. They will also develop a strong sense of responsibility for themselves and toward each other, their community, and the Earth's resources.
At Amidon-Bowen Elementary School, staff will use various sources of data to drive instruction and promote individual growth. We will foster collaboration among adults in service of our students. We will align resources to support our students and their needs; foster their unique identities, and create and sustain a responsive, inclusive, diverse, safe, and welcoming school community.

Key Reminders
The Essentials
Parent Communications - This year, Amidon-Bowen will be using the Remind App as our primary parent to school communication tool. An email went out to families at 4:30pm with information about connecting to their accounts. Your account is already created based on your child's registration in ASPEN for the current school year. Please download the Free App on your phone and customize how you want to receive messages (via the app, email, etc). This will also allow you to communicate with teachers and school staff.
Attendance Matters! - Students should arrive to class by 8:45am daily. Beginning on Tuesday, students who are late will need to be signed in and a member of the staff will escort students to class to minimize interruptions to classroom learning environments.
Cheerleading Tryouts - Cheerleading for 4th and 5th graders will occur on Thursday, September 12th. See the flyer at the bottom of this newsletter for more details and requirements.
Outside Food: Effective immediately, the school will not assume responsibility for or accept outside food deliveries for students. Please refrain from ordering students outside food from a delivery (Uber Eats, etc) as we will not receive it on behalf of students. If students do not want to eat school lunch please send them with a packed lunch from home in the morning.
Prior Updates
AM arrival - Doors will open each morning at 8:15am for student arrival. As a reminder, students are not supervised by school staff prior to 8:15am, so please be mindful when bringing students to campus.
PM Dismissal - Students will be dismissed promptly at 3:15pm each day. Families are expected to arrive for pickup between 3:15pm and 3:30pm unless their student is in an approved after school event.
- K-5 Students will be dismissed from the blacktop each day (unless inclement weather occurs)
- ECE students will be dismissed from their classrooms each day.
Students will NOT be released to any adult that is not listed on their authorized pickup form. Students will only be allowed to walk home if they have signed permission and are of the appropriate ages.
Registration & Immunization Records - Students must be fully registered and have proof of residency on file to attend school each year. If you are missing paperwork, please be sure to drop it off to the office prior to the first day of school to avoid longer wait times. Immunization records are also required to be up-to-date. If you have a question about these items, please reach out to Ms. Cureton in the main office via email at latetia.cureton-alston@k12.dc.gov.
Dress Code - Please be reminded that Amidon-Bowen is a School Uniform School. Students should attend school daily in their uniform which consists of navy blue bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts/skorts) and a polo shirt in white, gray, or navy blue.

Save the Date: Back to School Block Party (9/14)
The DCPS Back to School Block Party will take place from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday September 14, at Jefferson Middle School (801 7th Street Southwest Washington, DC 20024). For more information, please click here.
Afterschool in the City 2024 (9/7) - Afterschool in the City 2024 is on Saturday, September 7, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Deanwood Community Center (1350 49th St NE, Washington, DC 20019). Families will have the opportunity to explore afterschool and out-of-school time programming available to District youth ages 5-21 during the 2024-25 school year. On the Horizon
August 23rd - 3:30pm - 5:30pm - Meet the Teacher & Welcome Back Fun
- Families are invited to come into the school and meet their child's classroom teacher. We will also have some fun activities out on the field to come together as a community before school starts! Please plan to join us.
August 26th - First Day for K-5.
- Doors open at 8:15am for student arrival.
August 27th - 10am - ECE Play Date
- Join our ECE team on the Playground to meet your child's teachers and classmates.
August 29th - First day for ECE
- Doors open at 8:15am for student arrival
- 9am - ECE Family Orientation in the Cafeteria w/ Principal Jackson
September 2nd - No School - Labor Day
