Principal's Message
Dear Angell Community,
I hope everyone is enjoying all this fall-like weekend has to offer. My family enjoyed some fresh air visiting our daughter at Adrian College on Saturday and cheering on our son and the Berkley High School football team Friday night at Troy Athens. Our family loves this time of year. We are excited as we anticipate the start of a new NFL season and look forward to what we hope is a Super Bowl journey for our Detroit Lions.
As we prepare to return on Monday, I wanted to take a little extra time to reinforce the importance of developing safe habits for all of our students. After watching drop off and pick up the last two weeks I would be remiss if I did not share my concerns. I have noticed students exiting their vehicles on Bacon and Cummings into the traffic side rather than the sidewalk side of the street. I have also noticed many families crossing at random spots on the street rather than taking the extra time to use our protected crosswalks. I have also watched as parents and students cross through the staff parking lot in an effort to save time and cut down on distance. Each time we take these shortcuts we jeopardize the safety of our students. Please take the extra time to ensure all of our students travel safely to and from school. When we all do our part, we help create the necessary conditions to provide a safe environment for our students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.
With everyone returning to school it is not uncommon to see an uptick in illnesses. Colds, Strep Throat, Covid, pinkeye, etc.... are inevitable. Please report any illness and keep your children home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. Our office will share any necessary updates to classes, as needed.
It is also not uncommon for students to experience conflict with other students. It is human nature to have a level of conflict. However, it is how we handle conflict that makes all the difference. I encourage families to practice the 3 Es when your children come home and share some of their struggles.
- Empathize: It is important to let our students know we care about them. When adults reflect care and concern it helps a student's feel love and supported.
- Encourage: Let your student know that that things can get better and that they have many strategies to manage challenges.
- Empower: Role play and practice scenarios that your children experience. Let them practice how to handle hurt feelings of any kind. Like anything in life, the more we practice the better we become.
One final thought for this week. When your student comes home from school, I want to encourage you to ask them how they helped someone that day rather than asking how their day was. The most important character trait we can encourage is kindness. If we shift the conversation to intentional acts of kindness, we will teach our students that caring for others matters. I have started using this strategy at school and it is amazing what I hear. It is also important to note how proud children feel when they do something kind for another person. We have worked hard to grow a culture of kindness at Angell and have many opportunities to continue our growth.
Enjoy the rest of your Sundy and see you on Monday.

Special Message from South Oakland County Soccer and DCFC South Oakland
We’re excited to share some great news from South Oakland County Soccer (SOCS) a Recreational Soccer program and Detroit City Football Club (DCFC) South Oakland a Select, Premier, and Elite Soccer program. We are launching our very own TOPSoccer program, and we are incredibly proud to provide this opportunity for players with special needs. We were able to secure Gabby Shriver, DCFC Women’s USL W pro team goalkeeper and experienced special needs soccer instructor, to lead the program. With Gabby and her team plus our volunteers, we're excited to better serve all the children in our community.
Speaking of volunteers, if you'd like to help support this program, please consider volunteering to be a TOPSoccer Buddy! This program works best when we have a lot of volunteers to assist the participants. We know that there are plenty of our club members, both teens and adults, who can help make this happen. We can't wait for you to join us on the field!
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
US Youth Soccer’s TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team placement program designed for young athletes with disabilities. It’s organized by passionate youth soccer association volunteers. The goal is to give every boy and girl, regardless of mental or physical disabilities, the chance to learn and play soccer. We aim to empower young athletes with disabilities to become valued and successful members of the US Youth Soccer family.
We’re thrilled to have Gabby Schriver leading our program here in South Oakland County. With Gabby and her First Pick Sports (FPS) team, South Oakland County Soccer/DCFC South Oakland will be offering this 6-week program for members of our community with program activities that help kids develop their social skills, gross motor skills, and soccer skills.

Counselors Corner
We’d like to say a big welcome and welcome back to all our Angell families! The start of a new school year is filled with many emotions, from excitement and anticipation about what is to come, to anxiety and frustration about all we must do. The children are busy settling into their new routines and we’re working to reconnect and strengthen our bonds as an Angell School family.
Last year it was our pleasure to join you at the monthly PTA meetings to present on topics such as executive functioning and emotion validation. This year, we are excited to return and share or revisit topics you find most relevant. If you were at the meeting and already completed our survey, thank you. If you could not make it, we would love to hear your thoughts. Please fill out this Google Form to let us know what issues you would most like to hear about.
Thanks for your time and your input!
Mrs. Chudler, School Counselor
Mrs. Greager, School Psychologist

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
All entrances, with the exception of the main front door at Bacon, are for students only. Each morning students should line up at their designated entrance door when they arrive at school. At 8:00am teachers will greet students at their door and walk them directly into the classroom. Please remember that ONLY STUDENTS and teachers are allowed to enter the building at these entrances, all other parents and community members must enter through the main office doors located on Bacon. Visitors (including parents) must sign in at the office and receive a visitor sticker. Please bring your state issued ID to facilitate this process.
If a child arrives after the doors have closed, they must enter the building through the main office. Please do not ask other students to open doors for you.
Students will be dismissed at 3:15pm at their designated door. Children who are not picked up in a timely fashion will report directly to the office. Children attending Kids Zone latch key will be picked up at classrooms by Kids Zone staff on a daily basis.
Traffic Pattern
Two years ago, Berkley Public Safety updated the traffic patterns and guidelines around our schools. Please take the time to review the traffic pattern including designated pick-up and drop-off zones and review the full Angell Traffic Pattern document and map.
Curbside drop-off & pick-up will take place opposite school grounds, on the resident/house side of the street.
Please note that during drop-off and pick-up, parking, stopping, and standing on the school side of the street is not permitted to allow public safety quick access to buildings in case of emergency.
Students will cross at the designated crosswalks at the corners of Bacon & Beverly and Cummings & Beverly
Students should exit cars on the resident/house side of Bacon and Cummings, walk to the corner, and cross with a crossing guard. Students should exit onto the curb, not into the street.
Caregivers are encouraged to park and walk with their child to school.
Parking is allowed opposite school grounds any time of day.
Angell staff parking lot is reserved for staff only and is not a drop-off/pick-up zone.
Berkley Public Safety will be enforcing the traffic rules.

Cash Policy
School cafeterias have a new cash policy this year. While students will be able to purchase a la carte items (milk, extra pizza slices) with cash, our cafeterias will not be able to make change for those purchases. For example, if a student purchased a $2 item with a $5 bill, they will not receive their change in cash. However, the $3 change will be applied to their meal account to use for another transaction. This adjustment will help increase the speed of the lunch lines.
Updated District Breakfast and Lunch Food Allergy Policy
The Berkley Schools Food Service Department takes food allergies and student safety very seriously. If a student has any food allergies and they want to eat breakfast and/or lunch at school that requires special accommodations, a physician must fill out the MDE Dietary Needs Form and return it to the office.
The form must be filled out correctly for the food service department to make any accommodations. Below are the four pieces of information that are necessary:
- Food or allergen to be avoided
- Explanation of how exposure to the food or allergen would affect the participant
- Food(s) to be substituted
- Signature of state licensed MD, DO, PA, NP
If a student has an allergy listed in an individual education plan (IEP), the food service department still needs the four pieces of information above to be included for any accommodation to be made.
Once the form is received by the food service department, the Food Service Director will reach out to the parents about what the child requires for meals. Staff at the school will be trained on the students' needs.
- We have vegetarian options available daily at all schools.
- At Elementary Buildings, there is no pork on the menu.
For students with a dairy allergy: Juice or water are not acceptable substitutes for milk per USDA guidelines. If a student is requesting either option or requires a milk substitute such as soy milk or almond milk, the Special Diet Statement form must be filled out and the requested substitute must be filled in. We do the best we can to accommodate all requests but there may be some limitations.
We do not make any accommodation for any student that does not have a medical form on file with our department. The Food Service Department is unable to track students with food allergies unless we have the Special Diet Statement Form on file. Please email the food service department with questions.
Visit the Food Services Webpage for more information. Detailed food ingredients and allergen information can be found on the Nutrislice page linked below.
Free Breakfast and Lunch for students
Breakfast and Lunch are FREE for all students for the 2024-25 school year! Thanks to the state of Michigan for again including Michigan School Meals in the 2024-25 budget. Please note single cartons of milk and extra slices of pizza are ala carte items and there will be a charge. Single Cartons of milk are $0.75 and extra slices of pizza (if available) are $2.00. You can load money on their account using Mistar or you can send in cash or checks.
For families that may have qualified to receive free/reduced meals or may qualify now, it is important to continue to fill out the Education and Nutrition Benefits Form to find out if you’re eligible. Being eligible provides many more benefits such as reduced athletics, AP testing and summer program fees and expanded funding from the State and Federal Government. Find the Education and Nutrition Benefits Form in the Back to School Packet - student section - and on the Food Service webpage.
Berkley Schools and ARAMARK have teamed up to provide students with the fuel that they need to have a successful academic year.. ARAMARK provides nutritious meals in accordance with the USDA standards. Visit the Berkley Food Service webpage for menus, updates and more!
