Spotlight
Sunnyside Kitchen Manager Jeni Stern said the school’s new walk-in cooler/freezer is a game-changer. When she started in November 2023, the school had no freezer because the original one was damaged in a fire that September. The state-of-the-art replacement, with digital temperature control, was installed over the summer.
Serving -- and connecting with -- students
GET TO KNOW JENI STERN
Sunnyside Elementary School 's student nutrition team includes a heaping serving of joy with every meal served. Kitchen Manager Jeni Stern takes pride in her interactions with students as well as the quality meals her team produces every day.
She accepted the position a year ago and couldn’t be happier.
What do you love most about your job and why?
I love seeing the kids every day while serving them breakfast and lunch. It brightens my day to see their faces. I always greet them with a smile and try to get to know each and every one of them.
Tell us about your team.
We have an awesome team in the Sunnyside kitchen. Barb Smith, Kelly Kinneman and I all work together to prepare students’ breakfasts and lunches. We are a well oiled machine and help each other out. Barb has worked with the school district for many years and Kelly and I have worked here for about a year. We also have student worker Amanda, who works in our dish room and is an amazing addition to our team.
What is your favorite menu item?
My favorite menu item is the orange chicken with rice. This is new for the elementary schools this year.
What might students going through the lunch line not know about you?
Students may not know that I am a new grandma to my granddaughter Cecelia!
What tips do you have for families to get children involved in the kitchen?
Let your children try to do different tasks in the kitchen, from measuring out different ingredients to stirring something to putting groceries away. Also, let them choose the meals and have them go shopping for the ingredients with you. Then let them help you prep the meal. I think they would be excited to be able to see their family eating what they chose and helped prepare.

Colvill Family Center
Our teachers continually learn, too!
Research shows that 35% of students read proficiently, but 95% of students can learn to read when instruction is based on the science of reading. That is the driving force behind our teachers' LETRS training this year. For early childhood educators, LETRS or Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling helps us improve instruction for the youngest learners. The more children know about language and literacy before they begin kindergarten and first grade, the better equipped they are to succeed in literacy learning and beyond.
