Onewhero Area School
Newsletter No. 10 - 7th May 2021
Principals Message:
Kia ora whaanau,
Welcome back to Term 2. Over the break the hall has been completed and the senior courts have been turfed. The carvings for our Maaori class are almost complete, so we are working on planning an opening/blessing ceremony for all the new areas of our work. This ceremony will be on the 31st of May in the morning. It would be great to have you all come, so save the day.
In Room 4 they have been working on poems for autumn. See the photos below.
Over the break, some of our senior leaders attended the Tuakau ANZAC ceremony. Torrin beautifully read a poem about the farmers that went to war. Emily and Kimberley presented the wreath on behalf of the school. The next day 11 of the senior leaders headed to Great Barrier for leadership camp. They learnt a lot of new skills and developed their ability to work as a team.
Next week on Thursday is a teacher only day. This teacher only day is for our staff to learn about some of the changes to NCEA that are happening. Our junior teachers are working on planning and resources for their units, and some are attending professional development in phonics. Our middle school teachers are working on the agency programs.
Ngaa mihi

Year 10 Mathematics Trip:
Onewhero Area School has once again signed up to be involved in the Secondary Schools Employer Partnerships (SSEP). Smart Waikato SSEP are formal relationships where employers from priority industries in the Waikato region work with teachers at Year 9/10 level to create ‘real world’ learning opportunities for students.
During the SSEP programme business representatives come into the classroom to show how they apply what students are learning in the classroom in their everyday work. Students also go on workplace visits hosted by employer partners to see their classroom learning being applied in real work situations. In addition to gaining a better understanding of the school subject, students meet a range of business representatives from different industries and are introduced to a wide range of careers. This supports students when thinking about their future careers and school subject choices.
The Mathematics Department have been working with Dempsey Wood, a company that specialises in Civil Infrastructure and Subdivision. They are a long standing company, being in business for 27 years. Dempsey Wood are behind a development at 161-169 Park Estate, Rosehill, Papakura.
On Thursday the 8th April the Year 10 cohort travelled to Rosehill, students went around the subdivision to look at various aspects of the development and to learn how Mathematics is used everyday in many ways.
A big thank you to Dempsey Wood for putting on a great day!
Careers:
Road Safety Education Program
Year 11-13 students have the opportunity to attend a one day RYDA Road Safety Education Program on Tuesday 18th May. The program, specifically designed for this age group, aims to increase an understanding of road safety issues including risk factors, educate students about rights and responsibilities on the road and equip them with the tools they need to choose behaviors that lead to safer outcomes on NZ roads. NB: Students do not need to have their licence to take part in the program; the course does not teach technical driving skills.
The cost of the program is fully subsidized by Rotary Clubs, co-founding sponsors BOC and NZ Steel, and major partner Bridgestone, and the Onewhero Area School STAR programme. We also thank COGS Waikato West and Trust Waikato for supporting the program.
Permission letters will be sent home this week. Please discuss this opportunity with your teenager. This is an awesome opportunity for them to gain valuable information and knowledge through an award winning program.
