New Titles in our Collection
What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
Halloween is Coming! We have several books just for the coming 'spooky season'! If you and your family aren't into stumbling around in the dark, while wearing an ill-fitting mask, and trying to navigate by flashlight, why not have a Halloween play? Felicia Bond explains how one classroom did it in 'The Halloween Play.' Roger and his school class are practicing for a very special play, with dancing by the light of the moon! Will Roger remember his part? Read this cute book and find out!
One of our very newest books is 'Trick or Treat on Scary Street' by Lance Bass. (Yes, THAT Lance Bass from N'Sync!) If you've read any of my previous reviews, you know that I'm very fond of rhyming books. There's just something about the lilting chant that invites reading aloud - or listening! Come along as a group of children encounter a ghost's house, a gingerbread house, a spooky cabin, several well-known freaky characters, and more!
With this next book, you can help in deciding on a costume and get a head start on something that's just right! Lily is having a problem with her choice, so she asks her kittens, Fluff and Frisky, for help. After many bad ideas, they finally come up with the perfect costume. When you read this book you may get some good ideas too! Read 'Halloween Surprise' by Corrine Dumas!

Fans of Gillian Flynn will certainly enjoy the thriller 'The Kind Worth Killing' by Peter Swanson (#1 in the series), for there is just something wildly entertaining about strangers meeting in an airport bar and then plotting a murder over martinis! Lily Kintner is the kind of dark horse character I enjoy reading about: she exacts revenge when revenge is needed (beginning as a child) but deludes herself into believing she has a moral compass somehow.
~"On a night flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing very intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that’s going stale and his wife Miranda, who he’s sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start—he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit—a contrast that once inflamed their passion, but has now become a cliché.
But their game turns a little darker when Ted jokes that he could kill Miranda for what she’s done. Lily, without missing a beat, says calmly, 'I’d like to help.' After all, some people are the kind worth killing, like a lying, stinking, cheating spouse..." ~Goodreads/4.0 rating
Happy reading, friends! ~Heather

We enjoyed having our special guests today! Breanna Stephenson, read her story, 'Twisty the Fly and I Go to a Garage Sale,' based on real life experiences with her nephew, Waylon.
