Principal Update
Greetings FitzGerald Families!
Congratulations to the fourth and fifth grade cast and crew of The Little Mermaid, Jr.! What an amazing show! These students have been working so hard over the last couple of months and their hard work as definitely paid off. Thank you to Ms. Grimes for her vision, organization, and overview of the entire show from start to finish! Thank you to Ms. Logue, Ms. Racine, and Ms. Bolduc for consistently being at every rehearsal and show, and putting in many extra hours outside of those times with the many items that need to be completed along the way. Thank you to Dan Strafford, Michelle Heffernan, and Sheila Gastrock for volunteering to help with the shows, as well as student alumni volunteers Katie Whittier and Logan Gastrock for helping as well. Thank you to parents/guardians and family members for helping with practicing lines, listening to many songs, and helping with rides. Thank you to PTO for helping with the funding and organizing concessions for the evening shows. It is a true effort from all involved and provided such a positive experience for the students!
Thank you also to all families that participated in last Friday's Multicultural event! We truly appreciate the time and effort that you put into creating the displays, making food to share, and providing a wonderful avenue into seeing more about the many cultures we have within FitzGerald School.

An Update on Report Cards and Attendance Policy Information
Report Cards:
Each year, students in Grades K-5 get report cards sent home to provide more in depth information on student progress throughout each term. Elementary students across the district have the same report card timelines. Report cards go home in February and June for students in Kindergarten and Grade 1. Report cards go home in December, March, and June for students in Grades 2-5.
Attendance:
With the first round of report cards going home next month for students in Grades 2-5, we want to review the attendance policies for the district that are adapted from the guidelines set forth from the Department of Education. Please see below for some information from the school handbook on these policies. The full attendance policy can be found on pages 35 and 36 of the district elementary school handbooks linked at the bottom of the newsletter.
It is incredibly important for students to be present at school, and on time, as consistently as possible. Attendance is taken each morning during homeroom. Parents/guardians must report a student’s absence and the reason for the absence to the main office: 781-314-5682 or 781-314-5680. The school carefully monitors student attendance and will contact families if a student is absent and the school has not been notified and/or if a student has excessive absences in a term. It is incredibly important that students are consistently in school. Excessive absences (and tardies) can greatly impact student learning and working together to ensure that every student has the best elementary experience possible is our goal.
The following excerpt is directly from the handbook and explains Chronic Absenteeism, as well as explains more on types of absences. Chronic Absenteeism is directly connected to our overall accountability level for the state of MA and is something that every member of the school community can help with:
“Massachusetts defines Chronically Absent as missing at least 10% of days enrolled (e.g., 18 days absent if enrolled for 180) regardless of whether the absences are considered excused, unexcused and/or for disciplinary reasons. Being chronically absent can have a significant impact on a student's ability to read at grade level, perform academically, and graduate on time.
School attendance greatly influences student success in school. The importance of punctuality is also essential to a child’s development of responsibility. Excessive tardies will be reviewed and reported to parents as necessary. We ask that parents/guardians/caregivers help instill this value in their child by helping him/her/them to be punctual for school. The Waltham School Committee strongly urges parents/guardians/caregivers of students not to schedule vacations or family business during periods of time when students are in school. Long-term absences are disruptive
to the teaching/learning process. It is essential that no student miss school when it can be
avoided. It is the responsibility of parents/guardians/caregivers and school personnel to
communicate with each other about a child’s absence from school.”
“The Waltham Public Schools emphasizes immediate notification of an absence to the school office. Consistent with state guidelines, there is no differentiation between the classification of absences. In other words, there are no ‘excused’ or ‘unexcused’ absences. When a student is not in school he/she/they are considered absent, so notification of an absence is important for the school for student safety and to determine if school interventions are necessary.
Reasons for absences may include, but are not limited to:
● Student illness with a doctor’s note
● Student medical appointment with a doctor’s note
● Observance of religious holiday
● Student attends a funeral
● Authorized school field trip
● Student is required to appear in court
Teachers at all elementary grade levels are not responsible for preparing long-term work or
assignments prior to students leaving for a vacation trip. If a family vacation or family business causes a student to miss school, teachers are also under no obligation upon the student’s return to prepare or assess missed work. In such cases of avoidable absences from school, students are not relieved of their responsibility to keep up with the material covered while they were missing school.
The loss of real time instruction with teacher and classmates cannot be replicated and may
impair the absent student’s academic progress. Therefore, parents/guardians and students
should make every effort to prevent any and all intentional absences from school. At the Elementary level, at the discretion of the Principal, excessive absences will prompt a review panel to discuss the student’s promotion to the next grade.”
We hope that by sharing this overview of the policy, we can work together to be proactive with student attendance, provide the most positive impact possible on student learning, and help to ensure that families are monitoring attendance numbers in order to not have students missing more than 10% of the school year this year.
We look forward to working collaboratively this year to support any questions or concerns regarding a child's attendance this school year. Please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Santillo or Mrs. Lamoly with any questions that you may have.
November Kindness Challenge Information
Greetings FitzGerald Families!
Wednesday November 13 was “World Kindness Day”! Students listened to the history of this very important topic over the announcements and many classrooms engaged in an activity to share with each other ways they can demonstrate kindness in their school and community. As a school we are working together on a school-wide initiative to create a “Kindness Chain”. All students received a sheet to complete with their families about kindness to return back to school. We are looking forward to seeing how many links we receive to create our rainbow of kindness together to be displayed in our lobby for all to see!
Please reach out if you have any questions!
Thanks!
Ms. Bernard
Specialist Spotlight: Science with Mrs. White!
Greetings FitzGerald Families!
We have been busy in the science classroom these last two months! The students have been working hard and learning many new things each week that I hope they are sharing with you. As we enter these next couple of months, here is what we have coming up in each grade level.
First Grade: We will be wrapping up our unit on light and sound. We have worked hard to learn some new vocabulary words such as transparent, translucent, and opaque. Please ask your child about these words! Our next unit of study will be space science with a focus on the sun, Earth, and moon.
Second Grade: In second grade, students have learned a lot about rivers and erosion. We recently completed a lesson on flash floods which included the skill of mapping and evidence collection to correctly identify Flash Flood Alley in Texas. In the coming months, we will conclude our Earth Science unit by studying canyons and landslides.
Third Grade: Students in third grade are continuing their study of the weather by creating climate maps to show where different climate zones are located on Earth. We will be concluding this unit in the coming weeks with an engineering activity in which students are asked to construct and test a windproof house. This unit is a great opportunity to talk with your child about the weather each morning as they get ready for school so they can be an active participant in figuring out what to wear based on the temperature it will be that day.
Fourth Grade: In 4th grade, students have learned a great deal about types of volcanoes, where volcanoes can be found on earth, and the process of weathering. We will be completing an experiment in the coming weeks that focuses on weathering and erosion. As our Earth Science unit continues, students will learn about how scientists can identify the relative age of fossils based on the layer of rock where they are discovered and we will review the causes of landslides and their ability to cause sudden changes to Earth’s surface.
Fifth Grade: 5th graders are wrapping up their Space Science unit and will be moving into our next unit of study all about water on Earth. We will start by learning about the relative amounts of salt water, fresh water, and frozen fresh water on Earth and will use this information to gain a greater understanding of how valuable fresh water is as a resource on our planet. In the coming months, students will review the steps of the water cycle and will complete an engineering project which incorporates designing, creating, and testing water filters.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns or you would like to send in a mystery picture for your child, you can reach me at: jenniferwhite@walthampublicschools.org

Principal Coffee Talks
What are Principal Coffee Talks?
Principal Coffee Talk times have traditionally been offered once monthly in the morning for the last several years at FitzGerald. This is a monthly informal conversation time where family members can connect with Mrs. Santillo and/or Mrs. Lamoly and ask any questions about FitzGerald School that they may have. This year, we are going to try to hold these informal conversation times at different times of day, so that there are more options available for those that would like to join.
We enjoyed the conversation this past Wednesday evening during the virtual "Dessert and Dialogue" time. Thanks to everyone who joined!
Next Coffee Talk Time:
Date: Thursday December 12th
Time: 8:45-9:15am.
