Answers to common questions over the summer
The first day of school for all students will be Thursday, August 29th
Summer Office Hours
School office staff are unavailable after Monday, June 28th. They will return in early August so any messages or emails will be answered then. The district office will be closed the month of July. Regular office hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, will resume on Thursday, August 1. District office staff are working periodically during July and messages can be left at 360-378-4133.
School Supply Information

Summer School
If your child needs to attend summer school, you will receive a letter in the mail in the next few weeks with details. Friday Harbor Middle School summer school is Monday to Friday, August 5th through 20th. There will be two sessions per day with students attending one or both sessions. The sessions are 8 am to 10:15 am and 10:30 am to 12:45 pm. Friday Harbor High School summer school is Monday, July 29th to Thursday, August 22nd from 8 am to 11:45 am. Griffin Bay online summer school is currently full.
Summer Meals
If your household participates in SNAP, FDPIR, TANF, or your child is receiving free or reduced-price school meals, your child will automatically be eligible for SUN Bucks this summer. More information can be found at https://www.sjisd.wednet.edu/Page/2547.
Additionally, the Friday Harbor Food Bank is offering a free summer meals program for families with school-aged kids this summer. Register online at https://fridayharborfoodbank.weebly.com/summer-nutrition-program.html.
Enrollment Questions
Q: I have a kindergarten student who needs to be enrolled. How do I do that?
A: Please complete the online registration at https://www2.nwrdc.wa-k12.net/scripts/cgiip.exe/WService=wsnjuans71/skyenroll.w. Families will not be contacted until school office staff are back in the buildings in mid-August.
Q: We just moved to San Juan Island and have a student who needs to be enrolled. How do I do that during summer break?
A: Please complete the online registration at https://www2.nwrdc.wa-k12.net/scripts/cgiip.exe/WService=wsnjuans71/skyenroll.w. Families will not be contacted until school office staff are back in the buildings in mid-August.
Q: We are planning to move and our child will be in a new school district. What do I need to do?
A: Inform your child’s school that you plan to move by leaving a message at:

Please return any school-provided supplies that you might have such as your child’s school-provided Chromebook, library books, etc. to the district office at 285 Blair Avenue. Note that the district office will have infrequent hours during the month of July but will be open during regular business hours starting August 1st.
Q: I need to submit Choice Transfer paperwork. How do I do that?
A: You can go to the Choice Transfer Portal at eds.ospi.k12.wa.us/ChoiceTransferRequest/
and submit the application electronically (it may not be processed until August 1st).

Q: I am considering homeschool for my children this year. What do I need to know?
A: Many families considering homeschool, enjoy the flexibility of our alternative school, Griffin Bay School. At Griffin Bay School families can access excellent curriculum resources and many types of support while still having the flexibility of being remote or partially remote students. New School Bus Riders
If your child would like to begin riding the school bus in the fall please complete a bus rider form found below and email it to kraighansen@sjisd.org, or return it in person to the school district office at 285 Blair Avenue, or mail it to PO Box 458 Friday Harbor, WA 98250. Our transportation department will contact new bus riders in late August with information about the bus.
Medical FAQs
Q: Does my child need any immunizations for school in the fall?
A: Please review this School Required Immunizations Table (https://doh.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2023-12/348295-ParentSchoolChart-2024-2025.pdf ) with your child's medical provider or compare the table with your child's immunization records by logging into MyIR (visit myirmobile.com to register). You may also contact our school nurse, Erin Donaldson at (360) 370-7306 (office phone through June 21st) or (360) 627-1266 (Summer cell phone). She keeps a record of students who are in need of vaccination.
Q: Do I need to visit my child’s medical provider over the summer?
A: During summer break, please make arrangements with your child’s physician to
have your 2024-2025 Permission to Give Medication at School form (found below) and any Health Care Plans (Asthma/Anaphylaxis, example Asthma plans found below) filled out and signed by your physician if they are needed (not all students will need these forms).
Sports and Recreation
Information about high school fall sports registration will be emailed later this summer. Football practice starts on August 21st. Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Boys Tennis, and Volleyball practices begin on August 26th.
SUMMER YOUTH ACTIVITIES (NON-DISTRICT)
Friday Harbor FC (Soccer)
Registration is open until July 12th. There is a free 2-week summer academy in August this year.
Tiger Football and Cheer
Practice typically begins in late July.

Concerned About Your Child's Development?
If you have concerns about your child's development and they have not yet enrolled in our school district, please contact Becky Bell at beckybell@sjisd.org or (360) 370-7911. She will respond with information and next steps for a developmental screening.
