Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Talofa lava! My name is Oriana Tyrell and I am your child's Physical and Health Education (PHE) teacher for 2024/5. I am excited to start this new journey in Japan, especially as I am a young Samoan from Auckland, New Zealand.

My purpose as a teacher at Abroad is to create a safe space for our students, for them to be encouraged, know that they are valued, and for them to build their confidence in fearlessly exploring who they are. It is also important for me to help them connect their learning to their own lives outside of the four walls of the classroom.

My goal for your child is for them to be curious about their learning, to build their confidence to ask questions, and to tap into their curiosity. I also hope this will transfer to all areas of their learning, in and out of school, as a lifelong learner.

I look forward to finally meeting all who are a part of the Abroad community - staff, students and families, and I can’t wait to be there!

This year marks a significant milestone in our educational journey as we celebrate our inaugural year as an IB World School for the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Embracing the values and rigorous academic standards of the IB framework, we have seen our students flourish, showcasing a remarkable level of inquiry, understanding, and enthusiasm. These pioneering students have not only navigated their own paths of learning but have also been quintessential in setting a high standard and culture of excellence within our school community.

Our older students, in particular, have stepped up admirably, embodying the IB learner profile traits in every aspect of their school life. They have taken on the role of mentors and role models for our younger students, guiding them through with empathy and intelligence. Their leadership and proactive engagement in school initiatives have fostered a supportive and inspiring environment, encouraging all students to pursue their passions and engage critically with the world around them. This leadership is building a strong foundation for our school's future, ensuring that the values of the IB are deeply embedded in our educational ethos.

The eagerly anticipated AIS Sports Day 2024 is just around the corner, set to energize our community on Saturday, May 25th, 2024. As a highlight of the academic year, this event promises a day filled with spirited competition and community camaraderie. Students, faculty, and families are encouraged to mark their calendars and prepare for a day that celebrates athletic skill, teamwork, and school spirit.
