Greetings Shaw Montessori!
Hard to believe that half of the school year has passed. The children have accomplished so much, and our community has accomplished so much! Thank you all for all things seen and unseen that you contributed to support our children and this incredible learning community. When I count my lucky STARS, each of you are there. This spring we look forward to a new playground, a science fair a sweetheart dance, a robust well stocked library, a practical life room remodel, several parent education evenings our annual talent show, big trips, a band festival, spring sports, basketball and softball and promotions ceremonies! Whew!
School attendance is critically important to your child and our school. When your child misses school they miss out on learning and gaps occur. Showing up and being on time are life skills that they need forever. The state of Arizona considers our attendance/absence/tardy rates when they calculate our school letter grade. Arriving on time is a habit that is already being learned when the children reach primary. Tardiness is an adult issue and effects your child, you know how you feel when you are late for work or appointments, same for your child and school. Our district calendar is published a year in advance on the district website: https://www.phxschools.org/ Please do not schedule trips that could be scheduled on one of our many breaks. Check that calendar prior to booking a travel opportunity.
On Friday, we will hold our school spelling bee in the cafeteria from 9:30-?? Parents are welcome to attend to watch this incredible spectacle. Can you spell as well as an elementary student?
We look forward to seeing you for Parent/Teacher Conferences this week. Remember that Wednesday, December 18th through Friday, December 20th are early release days. Winter break begins Monday, December 23rd and runs through Monday, January 6th. We look forward to seeing you again on Tuesday, January 7th! Wednesday, January 8th is a full day.
If you have not done your tax credit donation, please add it to your holiday list! Donations can be made here: https://www.phxschools.org/tax-credit or in the school office with Claire. Thank you!
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Shaw Spelling Bee
We are thrilled to announce our practice Spelling Bee on Monday, which will help prepare us for the official Shaw School Spelling Bee on Friday, December 20th at 9:30 AM in the cafeteria.
The top 3 winners from each class will represent their class in the school competition. From there, the top 2 spellers in the school bee will move on to represent Shaw in the district Spelling Bee!
A big thank you to our parent judges, Ms. Jessica Parker and Ms. Angela Herbst, as well as our district director, Dr. Brant Lloyd, for generously volunteering their time and expertise to this event.
We wish all our participants the best of luck!

By popular demand! One last round of print orders will be available tonight, with fingers crossed (but not guaranteed) that they can be delivered by the end of the week. Please email photos@tarakerwin.com with orders and payment (Venmo: @Tara-Kerwin, Zelle: photos@tarakerwin.com) due by 6pm tonight (Sunday, December 15th). Thanks!
8th Grade Yearbook Pages / Graduation Video
As we reach the midpoint of the school year, it's time to start working on the yearbook and graduation video to ensure everything is completed on time.
Each year, there are 6 to 8 pages dedicated to our 8th graders and a commemoration video. The number of pages included in the yearbook directly depends on the number of photos received.
What I need from you:
1 baby photo of your 8th grader and a minimum of 15 other images. These photos should be of your child throughout the years and can be solo or with their friends.
Please email these photos directly to me at your earliest convenience. Thanks in advance!

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
This was our final week with basil. I pulled the remaining basil plants save one for instruction. We continued making margherita pizzas, kale pizzas and pepper pizzas, using ingredients from our garden. We experimented with some vegan crusts and some gluten-free crusts. Next week we will continue with pizzas to fill a one-week gap in instruction. We will pull some of our summer plants and cover a few beds until February. When we return from break, we will either begin the brassica block OR dill & pickling, depending on plant growth. I am leaning towards dill & pickling as I will be canning over break. Stay tuned!
The Arizona Sustainability Alliance planted 20 trees on campus on Tuesday, including an orchard on the north side of campus. There were over 20 volunteers who helped plant the trees and an education group that worked with some lower elementary students on a few plantings. This project was funded on a grant through AZSA and a partnership with Phoenix One. The other schools also received trees through this partnership, however, we were the only school to receive fruit trees. Thank you AZSA and Phoenix One! Next week one of the educators will come work with upper el. They will be showing the students how to track tree growth using instruments.
The following volunteer date is on the calendar:
· February 22nd (2nd parent workday)
