A Soulful Christmas Concert At The Kimmel Center
This year 23 students from the Northwood Academy Charter School have been chosen to participate in the Kimmel Center’s Annual Soulful Christmas Concert that will take place on
Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at 7:30 pm.
The Soulful Christmas Concert was created after the collaboration between the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Heritage Chorale.
This event is inspired by the African diaspora and is hosted in the Verizon Hall located in the
Kimmel Center. The Soulful Christmas Concert was also created to bring communities and
community-based choirs, pastors, and churches across the city of Philadelphia, dancers, and many instrumental artists come together to perform on the Kimmel Center stage. This year, being added to the Soulful Christmas program is the Philadelphia Heritage Youth Chorale. Mr. Baker has selected 23 students to be a part of the Youth Chorale to represent the Northwood Academy Charter School in the Soulful Christmas Concert.

5 gifts to give a child this holiday season via PA Promise:
- Time. Time spent with your child helps them develop a stronger bond with you. It allows them to watch and learn skills they will need throughout their entire life.
- Attention. Children learn through experiences with their world. Your attention to them is at the heart of their learning.
- Patience. Developing new skills need lots of practice. Activities done over and over allow your child multiple opportunities to learn.
- Conversation. Your child is able to understand language before they can speak it. New words and sounds in conversations help them form their foundation for reading.
- Encouragement. Positive words of encouragement create a bond between you and your child. This supports them while trying new learning experiences.
About PA Promise for Children:
Pennsylvania’s Promise for Children, known as PA Promise, is a campaign to help families make good choices about their child’s early learning and choose quality early learning programs that are right for their family. The Pennsylvania Office of Early Learning and Development (OCDEL) is the primary partner in PA Promise.
What You Should Know about RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
You’ve probably heard cases of Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are rapidly increasing in Pennsylvania and nationwide. In fact, levels of RSV are higher than usual for this time of year so families need to know about RSV because some children can get very sick and need hospitalization.
RSV is a virus that usually causes common cold symptoms in most children and adults. Both children and adults can get it and there’s no vaccination available for RSV. While it usually causes mild illness, it is important to know that younger children are at much higher risk for serious complications requiring urgent treatment and in some cases hospitalization.
Factors increasing children’s risk for severe RSV infections include:
- 3 months of age or younger (due to difficulty clearing mucus from smaller airways)
- Being around other children in a school, childcare setting, or at home
- Living in crowded housing situations
- Exposure to secondhand smoke
- Children with a history of weakened immune systems, preterm birth, or heart or lung problems
It is particularly concerning right now because the spread of RSV and other seasonal respiratory illnesses like the flu has started earlier than usual this year. We know that COVID-19 is still circulating, too. Strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19, like strict hand washing and sanitation practices, along with masking, can limit the spread of all respiratory and viral illnesses, such as RSV and the flu.
The PA Department of Health strongly recommends flu vaccination and COVID-19 vaccination to help protect persons 6 months and older, especially individuals with a high risk for complications of respiratory infections.

Please read the below message from YouthCOR:
Although COVID-19 is slowly leaving our lives, the effects of the pandemic remain. The mental health of our youth and the growing needs of our students consumes our work every day. The CEO of CORA, AnnMarie McDowell, has developed one agency-wide CORA Holiday for CORA staff – a recognition day to rest, care for their own individual needs, and care for their family. On Monday, March 20, 2023, nearly three years from our last day of typical operations before the pandemic we are observing this CORA Mental Health Day. As a result of this holiday, all YouthCOR programs will be closed.
We will resume operation on Tuesday, March 21st, 2023.
Thank you for understanding and supporting all we do at CORA.

What is Safe2Say Something?
Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” BEFORE it is too late. With 'Safe2Say Something', it’s easy and confidential to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies.
Here’s how it works:
- Submit an anonymous tip report through the Safe2SaySomething system
- The crisis center reviews and processes all submissions
- The crisis center sends all submissions to school administration and/or law enforcement for intervention
- If needed, the crisis center may contact the tipster anonymously through the app
