Friday Family Message
October 17th, 2022
Hello Families!
The chill of winter is beginning to settle in! I thank our maintenance staff for ensuring our buildings are warm, safe, and easily accessible on these cold, wet days. An additional “thank you” goes out to our transportation team. This group of staff delivers our students to and from school each day, often in dark and stormy weather.
During the final 10 school days before Winter Break, I want to encourage our students and families to connect with their teachers and school staff as often as necessary to ensure the calendar year ends well! We are here for you and want to do whatever we can to help your student succeed and begin 2023 in the best possible way!
New elementary school boundaries
The district’s Capital Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC) is continuing its work on adjusting our current elementary school boundaries. We will soon bring proposals to the broader community for your feedback and input.
We expect the new boundaries to be in place at the start of the 2023-24 school year. Please click HERE to learn more about the CFAC. You can also review our Facility Master Plan and a recent demographic study we did to help us plan more effectively through the 2031 school year. Lastly, the webpage has an FAQ section to answer common questions from our community thus far.
Investigation Update
We have been in communication with our outside investigator regarding his progress in completing the investigation into allegations of racial comments made at the Stanwood-Lakes football game. We have been told to expect a final report by the end of next week.
Only in recent days has our investigator been able to obtain some of the statements and information we requested at the onset from Lakes High School and Clover Park School District. We appreciate your patience during the investigatory process.
Once we obtain the report from the investigator, we will process the information and meet with any relevant parties. After that happens, we plan to issue a statement and a summary of the report.
As soon as the information from the report is finalized, we will work collaboratively and transparently with our schools and community to take any and all necessary next steps.
Transitional Kindergarten program is coming soon
Stanwood-Camano School District is launching a free program in January aimed at helping children with special needs prepare for kindergarten.
The Inclusionary Transitional Kindergarten (ITK) program will start January 31 at Twin City and Utsalady elementary schools. Students will attend full-time in a classroom with a maximum of 20 students with a certificated teacher and a paraeducator. Between 30%-50% of the students enrolled will be students with disabilities.
The ITK program is aligned with the Washington Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to promote social/emotional competence in infants and young children.
Our goal is to provide families with the opportunity to ensure their students begin their school careers ready for kindergarten. This program will provide an equitable start for students by offering a high-quality early learning experience before they enter the traditional kindergarten classroom.
