Let's Talk Phenomena-Based Learning
The Pedagogy Tour Continues with Phenomena-Based Learning!
(Don't miss the opportunity to sign up for this PD. Check out course #45928 in the PDS for December 13th from 4:00-6:00 virtually.)
The goal of phenomenon-based learning is to prepare learners to solve problems in real life.
Instead of passively learning abstract or disconnected concepts, phenomenon-based learning presents real life problems and asks learners to actively discover the knowledge and skills required to solve them.
This fits in very well with the 5E Model of Instruction. The phenomenon should be your first E, engage. The 2nd E, explore, is a great opportunity for students to begin working through ideas surrounding this phenomenon.
With the phenomena-based instructional approach, students engage in learning that has more context to real life issues, apply knowledge and skills from different subjects, and develop important skills like communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.
Steps to get started:
1. Choose a phenomena from the real world; the topic should have a global context and be related to real life issues or events.
2. Develop an inquiry question around this topic that begins with either a “how”, “why” or “what if?”
3. Identify and teach the basic concepts that pertain to the phenomenon; what skills or knowledge will they need to solve the problem?
4. Ensure that there is an open structure of time for learners to engage in the necessary research and problem solving.
5. Facilitate the process by setting up a framework that will help guide students through the process and develop their own way of solving the problem.
When considering the cognitive demands of the science standards, this is a great way to ensure that the students are experiencing learning at higher cognitive demands. HELP IS ON THE WAY! Just as November was a month concentrating on the 5E Model of Instruction, December will be the month for phenomena-based learning. Again, I will be presenting a VIRTUAL PD on the topic on Tuesday, December 13th, from 4:00-6:00. Sign up in the PDS for course #45928. In addition, if you would like for me to come to your school and present to your teachers on the topic (allow for 2 hours), just contact me. Once the month is over, as is the case with the 5E Model of Instruction, an on-demand presentation will be available in our

Captial University:
Capital University in Columbus, Ohio is hosting the 60th Ohio Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) on Friday, March 3, 2023. We invite all interested science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) high school students (Grades 9-12), who are conducting original research, to join us in a state-wide and national competition that recognizes and awards students for their research efforts.
At the Ohio Regional JSHS event, students will compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their research before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Winning projects will receive college scholarships that are jointly sponsored by the United States Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Five Ohio high school students will advance to the national JSHS competition held later in the spring of 2023 where they will present their research to judges and students from the other 47 regional competitions. Additional scholarship and awards are available at each level.
For more information and to register for the JSHS Symposium, please visit https://www.capital.edu/jshs/. Registration closes on Friday, January 27, 2023 at 5 p.m.
