Newark High School Zooms with Tomi Oyemakinde
Our summer reading was The Changing Man by Tomi Oyemakinde. I emailed him in the spring to see if he had anything to share with students about his book. He sent an email with a letter for students, which included my tagline for the book: "a boarding school mystery with Stanger Things vibes." Over the summer, we set up a time for a Zoom experience. He is in England, so an in-person visit was not an option.
We held our meeting during Capstone (similar to homeroom) we got to visit and learn for 40 minutes.
Some logistics to think about for an author Zoom.
1. Be clear about times and time zones.
2. I selected three students who enjoyed the book and had questions to host the meeting. They told him about Newark High School and then kept the conversation moving. We met once before the Zoom so they were prepared and had a list of questions.
3. Students signed up ahead of time so that I could send passes and attendance at the meeting.
4. I recorded the meeting so English classes could use clips during their book discussion.
5. We had about 20 students at the meeting. I was a little disappointed because seniors had a mandatory assembly at that time. Most of my aides are seniors, so they missed out on the experience.
