Third Grade Testing
Dear Gables 3rd Grade Families:
All of our 3rd grade students will begin taking the 3rd Grade OST Achievement Assessment on Thursday, October 24th and Friday, October 25th. We will begin testing promptly at 9:00 AM. Our teachers have been working very hard to provide your child with the opportunity to be successful on these tests. We need the help of all of our parents/ guardians as we begin the testing process. Our goal is to have your child do his/her best each day.
Here is how you can help:
Make sure that your child is in school on time daily.
Make sure your child gets plenty of rest each night.
Make sure your child eats a good breakfast each day.
Talk with your child about the test each day after school.
As always, we appreciate your support. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school. Please do not schedule any morning appointments on these dates.
Sincerely,
Gables Staff

Notes from the Family Ambassador
Can you believe we are almost to the end of October? Just a reminder that report cards will be released in the Parent Portal on Friday, October 25th for your students. In the Parent Portal you will go to the main menu, and then drop down to Grades to see the report. Columbus City Schools no longer mails home report cards so you will need to seek out the information. If you need to activate your parent portal, please see below in this newsletter on how to take the steps to do that.
I would invite you to start thinking now about parent/teacher conferences in November. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how your student is doing academically and socially in school.
It is important to sit down with your student before the conference and explain that you will be meeting with their teacher to see how the school year is going. Ask them how they feel about school and if there is anything they want you to specifically address. Be sure to stress that they are not in trouble- this meeting is to see how you can best support their school efforts at home. Take time to think about questions before your conference.
A few ideas might look like:
- Which areas are my student's strongest or most challenging?
- Does my student participate in class?
- How are my student's test taking skills? What can I do at home to help them prepare?
- Does my student seem happy at school? How are my student's social skills?
- Prepare to ask teachers about your student's current assessments and what they mean?
These are just a few general ideas; we know each family has their own unique dynamic. Just take down some thoughts and prepare before sitting down with your student's teacher, you'll be glad you did. I'll have some more tips as the conferences get closer.
Hope to see some Gators at the skating rink on Friday!
We love to learn. Go get'em Gators!

Guidelines for Medication at School
Students needing to take medication during school hours must follow these guidelines:
- Provide the school nurse with a completed Medication Authorization Form signed by both the parent/guardian and the healthcare provider.
- Medications cannot be at school without the form and signatures of both doctor and parents. Medications cannot be held until the medication authorization form arrives.
- A new Medication Authorization Form is required each school year AND when there is a change in medication or dose.
- All medication must be in the original container in which it was dispensed by the healthcare provider or pharmacy and be labeled with the correct dose and instructions. The medication cannot be expired.
- The label must match what is on the Medication Authorization Form
- Students taking a medication at both school and home can request 2 separate labeled bottles from the pharmacy to divide the pills to have some at home and school.
- Students using an inhaler, epinephrine pen or other emergency medications at school can request 2 prescriptions from the healthcare provider in order to have a supply at home and school
- Medication must be brought to school by the parent or guardian. Bus drivers cannot be responsible for medications on the bus.
- School personnel cannot give over-the-counter medications unless prescribed by a healthcare provider. A medication authorization form is required.
- Prescribed over the counter medications follow the same guidelines as stated above for prescription medications. (Over the counter medications include pain medication such as Tylenol, cough medicine, eye drops, ointments.)
- Over the counter medications must be in the original container and not expired.
- A label must be attached to the medication which includes: the students name, name of medication, dosage, strength, route, time of administration and expiration date. Label must match the Medical Authorization Form.
- Medications ordered three times a day or less, unless time is specified, may not need to be taken at school. The medication should be given before school, after school and at bedtime.
All unused medication must be picked up by the parent/guardian on the last day of student attendance or it will be discarded.

IDEAS LIKE THIS...
There’s so much to love about fall in Ohio! With all of the pumpkin patches, apple orchards, back to school/sports events, and fall fun, it’s easy to stay busy. But don’t forget to stop and smell the autumn air and take in the beautiful fall color as the leaves change in Ohio!
With the cooler temps coming, the trees are about to transform with an explosion of vibrant red, orange and yellow fall leaves.
We can never predict the weather, but we can expect the leaves to change in October before we get sucked into the long, cold gray of winter in Ohio.
