Campion College Newsletter
Term 2, Week 4 - 15 May to 21 May
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S PEN
Tēnā koutou parents, students and whānau,
Today our students joined in the national Pink Shirt Day. Our emphasis for the day focused on
positive and respectful relationships, increasing confidence and self-esteem and recognising
and responding to bullying behaviour. Hopefully these underlying themes continue to guide our
youth as they journey through the year.
It is great to see the range of activities that our students are involved in. This week, students
took part in the gymnastics festival, waka ama, our College swimming sports, road safety week,
academic tutoring, badminton, knitting/craft group, Young Vinnies, art club, as well as our winter
team sports and a large number are practicing for the regional kapa haka competition. We gain
a greater sense of ourselves and of others through our involvement in activities such as these
and participation in them helps us recognise the gifts we have been given by God and the
giftedness of others. These activities strongly support the College academic curriculum.
Unfortunately, teacher industrial action continues into next week as PPTA and the Ministry of
Education cannot reach agreement over conditions of employment. This means that the
‘rostering home’ of selected year levels on particular days will continue. In the coming week this
will affect Year 11 on Thursday, 25 May. We continue to pray for a speedy resolution.
May you all enjoy the weekend ahead and to all our sports teams we wish you every success.

A WINTER'S KARAKIA
On these winter’s days
We are thankful for the small things that lift our spirits-
The warmth of another’s smile or embrace,
The glimpse of the sun through the clouds,
Freshly brewed coffee,
Newly baked bread,
Hot soup.
On these winter’s days
We are thankful for glimmers of hope;
For acts of kindness that tell us
We are not alone
In our sorrow,
In our suffering,
In our uncertainty.
On these winter’s days
We are thankful for
All that stirs us into life;
For funny stories and laughter,
For music that sets us dancing,
For words and wisdom that inspire us.
On these winter’s days
We are warmed
By the beauty of this place in which we live,
By the company of family and friends,
By our passion for justice and peace.
May the thoughts of our hearts,
the words of our mouth,
the work of our hands,
and all that we do with our lives
speak of grace and truth
as we seek to live in the way of Christ.
Amen.
WINTER ILLNESSES
As winter approaches, we kindly remind our whānau about the presence of winter nasties that can affect our students' health. It is crucial that we work together to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone at our kura.
If your child is feeling unwell, we kindly request that you keep them at home until they have fully recovered. This helps prevent the spread of illnesses among our students and staff, ensuring the well-being of our entire school community.
Furthermore, as a reminder, it is mandatory for students to isolate at home for a period of seven days if they have been diagnosed with Covid-19. Students may return to school on the eighth day, provided they are symptom-free. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in adhering to these guidelines. By working together, we can maintain a healthy and safe learning environment for all.
NZQA LOGIN
We would like to remind our NCEA students of the importance of creating an NZQA account. This account serves as a valuable tool for students to verify and ensure the accuracy of their information, as well as access their NCEA results and online digital assessments.
For New Users:
If you haven't created your NZQA account yet, follow these simple steps to get started:
Visit www.nzqa.govt.nz/learner-login
Click on "Create account"
Complete the online form with your details
Existing Users:
If you already have an NZQA account from previous years, you're all set! Just visit www.nzqa.govt.nz/learner-login to log in using your existing credentials.
Important Note:
To create a new account, you will need your National Student Number (NSN). These will be emailed to students on Monday.

GYMNASTICS FESTIVAL
This week, our students showcased their incredible talents at the much-anticipated Tairawhiti School Gymnastics Festival. It was a spectacle of grace, strength, and precision as our gymnasts took centre stage and left a lasting impression. We are proud to have had our students participate in the event, demonstrating their commitment and passion for gymnastics. Their hard work and dedication leading up to the festival truly paid off, and we applaud their remarkable performances.
A special mention goes to the rhythmical dance team, led by the talented trio of Lulu Howarth-Jarratt, Lola Brodin, and Eva van den Heuvel. In recognition of their exceptional talent, the entire team was invited to participate in the prestigious 'best of the best' recall show in the evening. This invitation is a testament to their skill, and we congratulate them on this outstanding achievement. Ka rawe, koutou!

SECOND HAND UNIFORM SALE
Don't miss out on our Young Vinnies' Second-Hand Uniform Sale! Join us outside MacKillop on Monday, May 29, where you can get some great deals on pre-loved uniforms. All items will be sold for a gold coin donation, and the proceeds will go towards supporting the St Vincent de Paul Society, assisting the vulnerable in our community. Mark your calendars and support a worthy cause!
JAMMIES FOR JUNE
Thank you to all those who have donated new PJs, thermals, socks and hats. The last day for collection is this Monday, 21 May. Please drop these into the office on Monday. This is a great way to donate to the most vulnerable in our community this winter, or even a monetary donation. If you are planning on buying some new winter PJ’s why not buy an extra for a child in need.
WAKA AMA
Last Friday, our J16 Waka Ama team had an incredible opportunity to attend a workshop at Massey University that combined the worlds of science and traditional Maori canoeing. Massey University, in collaboration with Curious Minds Waka Ama, introduced an exciting new waka ama paddle that measures power and speed output, inspiring our rangatahi to pursue science and embrace their cultural heritage.
Campion students, Jack and Rory Gifford, Mac Morley, Neils and Jaco Du Preez, were among the first in the world to try out this groundbreaking technology. They gathered and analysed their own data, taking their waka ama skills to new heights.
But the workshop wasn't just about science. It offered a well-rounded experience for our students. They also had the chance to work with a visiting nutritionist, learning about post-exercise nutrition and creating their own delicious smoothies for optimal recovery.
To get a glimpse of the excitement and discovery our students experienced, check out the video below. It captures the amazing blend of science and Waka Ama that left our students inspired and motivated to explore new possibilities.
PPTA ROLLING STRIKE ACTION
Unfortunately PPTA industrial action continues with rolling strikes. The proposed action will occur on the following days:
Thursday, May 25 for Year 11
Tuesday, May 30 for Year 13
Thursday, June 1 for Year 12
Tuesday, June 6 Year 10
Thursday, June 8 for Year 9
Please be prepared for your children to be at home on these days due to the small number of non-union staff at our college.
We understand the disruption this causes for many in our community and we thank you for your understanding.
