Solar Eclipse Here at Lisbon
Good afternoon Lisbon…Happy Friday!
This upcoming Monday’s (April 8) solar eclipse will provide a unique, memorable, and intriguing opportunity for students and adults alike. In fact, this rare occurrence will not take place again for 20 years on August 23, 2044. I felt it was important to provide a brief moment during the 2:00-4:35 eclipse window for our students to experience the event in a safe, structured, and purposeful manner while at school. In order to ensure that the time outside is safe and meaningful for our students, several protocols have been established and will be strictly followed…
- Lisbon’s PTA has purchased solar eclipse viewing glasses for every child and staff member. These glasses are produced by The Eclipse Store. The Eclipse Store is among the venders recommended by American Astronomical Society and was also included in HCPSS’s link of approved companies that was embedded in Thursday’s message. The glasses are ISO certified.
- Students will be required to wear the glasses during the brief grade level outdoor experience and during transitions associated with dismissal.
- At Lisbon, no outdoor recess will occur starting at 1:55 pm. This means that our 3rd and 4th graders will have indoor recess on Monday.
- Each grade level‘s brief time outside will be reflective of an organized, aligned, developmental, and coordinated approach to the experience. It will not be a time for “extra recess.”
- Due to the brief nature of our outdoor visits, as well as the logistical and management responsibilities related to this teachable moment, we will not be able to accommodate parents to join the experience with the classroom. If you prefer to experience the eclipse together as a family, you have the option to sign your child out of school.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, or your child’s teacher, with any questions.
Have a great weekend!

Solar Eclipse Visible in Howard County
Solar Eclipse Visible in Howard County
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Howard County, Maryland. This partial eclipse will begin at 2:05 pm, with maximum coverage at 3:21 pm, and end around 4:35 pm.
School dismissals will occur during the solar eclipse, with Tier 2 elementary and middle schools dismissing during the height of the eclipse. Some students will already be home by that time.
Safety during a solar eclipse is important. Please review this information with your child(ren) to ensure safety at home:
- Never look directly at the Sun, especially during a solar eclipse.
- It is dangerous to look directly at the Sun and can cause permanent damage to the eyes.
- Do not look at the Sun through sunglasses, telescope, or binoculars.
We encourage you and your family to read more about solar eclipses and safety and enjoy experiencing this rare, exciting phenomenon.
2024-2025 Bus Service Registration
Parents/guardians whose children are eligible for bus transportation are asked to register to receive bus service each year to help the school system plan for student transportation needs. The transportation registration process will open at 9 a.m. Monday, April 8 through May 31, and will be completed online via HCPSS Connect Synergy. Registration must be done for each eligible child.
To be eligible for bus service, your child’s home address must be outside of a school’s walk zones. You can verify address eligibility in the HCPSS School Attendance Area Locator. After inputting your address, a window will appear that will indicate either bus or walk for each school level. Please note, the attendance area locator also includes a link for the bus stop locator, which is set for the current school year. Bus stop information for the 2024-2025 school year will be available in August.
You do not need to take any action if:
- Your child is not eligible for bus transportation
- Your child receives transportation as part of their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan, or
- Your child is a graduating senior
Details on bus transportation registration, including a guide to register and scenarios families may see when registering, can be found online.
Lisbon Spirit Day
Our Lisbon Staff is excited about the beginning of baseball season! Help show your team spirit by wearing your favorite baseball team gear to school on Monday, April 8th. No need to support only MLB teams, we'd love to see your local team's jersey, a sibling's jersey, or other baseball themed items on Monday!
Field Day Volunteers
Our annual Field Day will take place on Friday, May 31st with a rain date of Thursday, June 5th.
Each year, we require many parent volunteers to run our events. Please indicate below if you would like to assist us. There are 3 options for volunteers; AM/PM or ALL DAY. The AM shift is from 10:00-12:15, the PM shift is from 1:00-3:15 and the ALL DAY shift is from 10:00-3:15. Please indicate which time slot you would like to volunteer for and if you are available for the rain date. Due to safety, we cannot have spectators, which includes siblings. If you would like to be here with your student the day of Field Day you must volunteer. Thank you so much for your understanding in this matter.
All volunteers will need to complete the volunteer requirements. The volunteer requirement links are below. Please make sure you have completed BOTH links and the volunteer certificates below. We cannot let anyone volunteer without completing this. If you have already completed it this year you do not have to complete it again.
