Kid By Kid: Thoughts from the 2017 Texas Assessment Conference!
After attending several sessions from the Texas Assessment Conference there is a theme that runs through the sessions. It is even reflected in the proposed Performance Level Descriptors from TEA for STAAR. Perhaps this shift has been happening for a while, but with House Bill 2804 (A-F) the shift will be seismic in nature. Are your systems sophisticated enough to allow teachers time to get to the student level in regards to their needs around learning success or lack thereof?
The proposed Performance Level Descriptors released back in December reveal the heart of this shift at the classroom level and campus level. Some of the passing standards are as low as 37% in some content areas. Is that Satisfactory performance? I think we all agree that is a low bar. The change in performance labels are designed to give more accurate information as to where students are on the vertical scale. “Approaches” as a rating level does not indicate success although it is the SSI standard and that has caused some concern. However, it does indicate the student has some growing to do and gives us a picture of where the student is other than simply “they passed.” These labels scream “Kid by Kid.”
Who are your bubble kids? THEY ALL ARE! How can we create this focus in a world of limited time for teachers and students with high needs?
· Create systems that allow it to be easier for the teacher! One of the things we consistently hear is “Where is the time to get all this done and do my UIL activities and lesson plans finished?” Plan your school year and school day calendar with this in mind.
· Maintain the urgency of the first day! – Urgency is an interesting dynamic as some feel it leads to stress and emotional drain. Keeping teachers urgent is the primary responsibility job of the leader in a high stakes accountability world. When people lose their urgency they revert to what is easy, which means teach them all the same way. “Kid by Kid” goes away when a culture is not urgent.
· Do not hide the accountability system from teachers. There is a tendency among some to shield teachers from the nuances and drivers of the system because they are busy and have such emotionally draining jobs. It is part of the profession just like regulations are in the medical industry and new laws impact tax accountants. We are not advocating understanding the nuanced pieces, but there has to be an understanding of what outcomes are desired by the system and the district. We have found most teachers want to know.
Commissioner Morath in a webinar with TASB last week articulated the desire to focus on all kids in his explanation of Domain 1 in the new system and Domain 1 and 2 certainly accomplish that goal. Aligning with this system will force us to go “Kid By Kid!”
Continuing the Conversation - "Start With Higher Order Thinking":
In February, I shared the article entitled "Start With Higher-Order Thinking" (Brookhart-ASCD2016) and I facilitated a professional learning mini-session regarding higher order thinking skills and effective instructional strategies for each grade level.with PLCs on your campuses. Two techniques we discussed that can help teachers support student thinking is providing appropriate feedback and "wait time". An info A short clip about "wait time" from Forney ISD is shared below as well as an infographic regarding providing appropriate feedback:

Change is constant. But change is difficult.
So what happens when an organizational change is handed down from the top and the people of the organization are not involved?
Do you have a group of people who are accepting…or angry?
Do you have a group of people who are focused…or frustrated?
Do you have a group of people who are committed…or complaining?
To get the results we want, it takes a group of people who understand the why and have embraced the how.
To get the drive that we need, it takes a group of people to be part of the change instead of having change imposed on them.
To get the commitment we demand, it takes a group of people, to become engaged in the cause and involved in the change.
We are stronger together than apart.
We are more effective when we resonate in unison.
We are more creative if we all work together.
We are more impactful when we understand what is needed, and why.
The next time you’re planning to implement change, ask those around you what they think instead of telling them how to think.
Ask HOW they can help you shape the change instead of telling them WHAT they need to change.
To lead change is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of well thought out decisions with the heart of people’s commitment. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.
Lead from Within: Organizations are successful with change when the people within them embrace the change. It takes one gesture. One person. One moment at a time.
Change is the end result of genuine understanding and learning.

A "one-size fits all" approach to customer service is no longer viable. Businesses competing on service need to understand and cater to customers' racial, ethnic, religious, generational, and geographic differences in order to meet or exceed customers' service expectations. Crafting the Customer Experience to People Not Like You shows how companies, brands, and products struggling to differentiate themselves in a sea of sameness can foster long-term loyalty and brand preference with exceptional and customized customer service.
You cannot control the economy, the stock market or the costs of goods and labor. But you can control your organization's customer service. It's an empowering thought. Customer service is 100% in your control at all times and it's more important than ever.
