Happy Valentine's Day Week!
This is the week we celebrate love - in all forms. One of the things we emphasize with our students is self-love and self-care. We do this by focusing on coping skills, things that they do to take care of their mental health. We suggest that all students have a list of coping skills that they can turn to when they are stressed, anxious, sad, or just had a bad day. They can be something as simple as playing a video game, taking a nap, drawing a picture, listening to music, or walking the dog. We also suggest that students create a healthy and encouraging support system. A good rule of thumb, if a student feels constantly drained after spending time with someone - they may need to create some space in that friendship. Healthy friendships should uplift and encourage.
If you feel like your child could use some help in either developing coping skills or creating a support system, please let their grade level counselor know!
Happy Love Day!
Band and Orchestra Clinicians at Universal
A Glimpse Into the World of Professional Music
In January, the SCMS Band and Orchestra Programs participated in the STARS Performance Program workshop, "Sound Design: Music and the Art of Foley", performing the soundtrack, voice overs, and sound effects for scenes from the movie, Despicable Me.
During this program, the band and orchestra students synced music arrangements to this beloved blockbuster film, created Foley effects for an array of exciting scenes, and voiced over some of their favorite characters, such as Agnes, Margo, and Gru. This gave students the opportunity to experience life as working movie musicians, to practice teamwork, and to refine their skills on a multitude of levels.
This is a high-energy workshop, endorsed by the National Association for Music Education. Designed to align with the National Core Arts Standards, Universal Orlando partnered with Robert W. Smith, a consummate music educator and one of today’s most popular composers, to produce this stimulating workshop for middle school performing arts students.
It is designed to expose students to a plethora of careers they might not know exist, including audio engineers, video engineers, conductors, composers, directors, and producers.
The SCMS students were engaged throughout the workshop asking questions, learning about careers, experiencing auditions, and most importantly, making music! The students have had a wonderful three days of music education, team bonding, and making memories that will last a lifetime!

Support Mrs.Williams' Cosmetology AE Class!
AE classes bring students and staff together to explore topics of personal interest. Mrs. Williams, one of our seventh grade ELA teachers, is a licensed cosmetologist and has begun a class on cosmetology that students in all grades are enjoying. However, the class does require some equipment, and we strongly believe that need shouldn't keep students from fully participating.
We are looking for gently used curling irons and brushes, hair straightening tools, and extension cords. We are also hoping for donations of mannequin heads of various colors and ethnicities, like one linked here.
Donations can be sent or delivered, care of Mrs. Williams, to the front office. Thank you for supporting student learning and fun!
Donation Drop-Off
Thank you again, Shocker Nation! Thanks to your generosity, Mrs. Kissmann was able to completely load her SUV with supplies for the York County Animal Shelter! Both the volunteers and their furry, fuzzy friends are grateful!
