Happy Monday Hornets!
I hope you all had a great weekend and had a chance to enjoy the beautiful fall weather.I had a chance to hang out with all of my family this weekend and enjoy some football.
This week we have a number of activities happening at the high school. On Tuesday, the senior class will meet with Jostens during Extended 2nd Period. This is the seniors first opportunity to order graduation materials - caps, gowns, Announcements, swag, etc. We will have information available in the main office after the meeting.
Also on Tuesday, the Boys Tennis Team plays Todd Beamer HS at the EHS Courts, 3:30 PM. This is Cram the Courts Day and Senior Day. We would love to see you all out there supporting Boys Tennis.
On Thursday Girls Swimming team takes on Federal Way HS at the Enumclaw pool at 3:30 PM. This is Cram the Pool Day and Senior Day.
On Friday there is no school for students. Teachers have a professional learning day. This will give students a chance to sleep in and have plenty of energy for the football game against Kent Meridian High School at Pete's Pool, 7:00 PM. Go Hornets!
I have shared a couple of informational items as well this week. There are instructions for reporting a student absence so that all of are students are accounted for. There is the staff spotlight on Ms. Goucher, an English teacher at EHS. I also included information on the Career Center, Coming Attractions, and Picture Make-up Day.
Finally, I included a short article on guest teachers. We are really lucky at EHS that we have dependable guest teachers that know our students and who work in our building regularly. Not all schools have this luxury these days. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find good substitute teachers. Our guest teachers deserve to be treated respectfully. This short article is a good reminder.
That's all for now. I hope you all have a great week!

Staff Spotlight - Monica Goucher
Position: English Teacher
Positive Impact: Ms. Goucher is an excellent English teacher and tirelessly works to help her students fall in love with books. She is heavily involved at EHS including serving as the National Honor Society advisor, the voice of EHS Girls Soccer at their home games, and our resident literacy expert.
Why did you become a teacher? I decided to become a teacher when my own kids started in school. I worked in their classrooms as the "class mom" and found that I really enjoyed it. But my journey toward becoming a teacher was long and winding with fraught with self-doubt and fear. I came close so many times but would back away because it just didn't feel right. Once I finally started subbing, my confidence grew and I knew this was meant to be. I think being an older "new" teacher gives me an advantage over other teachers because I've worked in other careers and appreciate what teaching offers compared to other jobs. It also provides a story to tell my students - you don't have to be stuck but can make different choices for yourself, even when your in your 40s!
What do you love most about your job? I love spending time with the kids. They make the job worth it, even when they are frustrating and stressful. I love getting a student who HATES reading and, after working with them throughout the school year, eventually realizing that reading is not as bad as they thought. (I have had some students say they remember when they loved to read and found the joy in it again during my class!) I know I won't reach every student, but I will reach some which is good enough for me.
What are your goals for the year?
1. Improve the pace and sequencing of Pre-AP English 10 to increase the challenge for students. (Feedback from students was that it was easier than expected.) Also, add more writing instruction & tasks.
2. Develop Film as Literature curriculum (possibly write a book to publish?).3. Increase the number of NHS service opportunities within the school. I want to see NHS members lead more at EHS.
Who are some of you biggest influences? As an English teacher, I've learned so much from Kelly Gallagher, Penny Kittle, Rebekeh O'Dell, and Susan Barber. For teaching in general, I've been influenced by Monte Syrie, Matthew Kay, and Joe Sanfelippo. In life, my husband (Cheesy, I know!), Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift, and Ted Lasso (even though he's not a real person).
EHS Picture Makeup Day! Say, "CHEESE!" Hornets (10/25/24)
