Two New Years
Author: Richard Ho
Illustrator: Lynn Scurfield
Publisher: Chronical Books, Aug. 2023
Summary: For this multicultural family, inspired by the author’s own, two New Years mean twice as much to celebrate! In the fall, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, offers an opportunity to bake challah, dip apples in honey, and lift voices in song. In the spring, Lunar New Year brings a chance to eat dumplings, watch dragon dances, and release glowing lanterns that light up the sky.

Chloe's Lunar New Year
Author: Lily LaMotte
Illustrator: Michelle Lee
Publisher: Harper Collins, Jan. 2023
Summary: It's almost Lunar New Year, and Chloe can’t wait to celebrate! But first, Chloe and her family must prepare for the new year. They buy new shoes, lay out good-luck oranges in a bowl, decorate the red envelope, and make a crispy turnip cake. Everyone comes together to cook a fantastic feast, saving a plate for A-má, of course. Chloe enjoys the festive celebration and yummy food, but most of all she loves spending time with her family.
Lily LaMotte and Michelle Lee have created a tender, warm, and uplifting holiday story about tradition and the importance of being with those you love.
The back matter contains educational facts about the Lunar New Year celebration in Taiwan and a fun recipe for a yummy fortune cake!

Would you like your students to learn more about this holiday and the man it honors. I would be happy to collaborate with you. Sent me and email so that we can discuss what learning opportunities would work best for your students and book a collaborative lesson.

Choice Boards
There are a lot of great uses for digital choice boards in the classroom. Choice Boards can be used to inspire teacher lessons or with students as independent learning centers or morning routines to name a few.
You can share choice board with students easily through Canvas or Seesaw.
- You should make a copy of the choice board link and save it to your drive.
- When you share with students I would encourage you to make the link view only or force to copy so they do not delete your content in the choice board.
**Please note that these Choice Boards are 100% editable if you save your own copy. It is important to check the CCS Reviewed Digital Resources to ensure the resources are on the approved list. The list is updated often, so it is important to check.**
Collaboration
A big part of my job is collaborating with teachers. This could look like a co-teaching lesson, support with a project, gathering resources on a topic, and much more. You are welcome to email me so that we can get some ideas together about what would support you and your students best.
Snowball Fight
I am thrilled that so many students chose to read over the break. We will be using the data from Beanstack to award students their snowball fight.
- Bracelets are for the students who earned the snowball fight. Please have students wear these on the days of the snowball fight.
Wednesday, Jan 8th
Students should WEAR their snowball bracelet.
Students who earned a snowball fight sticker will report to the front lobby during Encore.
During the first 10 mins of Encore they will have a snowball fight with school staff.
Teachers are welcome to join if they wish.
Students will be taken to their Encore after the snowball fight.
