First Week of School at H.M.S.
Principal's Message
This week has been rewarding. I look forward to us welcoming the students on Monday, August 19th and having a wonderful first week of school. Let's continue to collaborate and maintain an effective, engaging, and conducive educational environment. Remember to be on time and greet our students with excitement. We are the Henderson Warriors and we are "Committed to the Work!".

***Special Note: The building will be open tomorrow, August 17th (Door #16 only). Doors will open at 9:00am and the building will close promptly at 12noon. The custodial team will not be on-site. All trash must be taken to the dumpster. Do not place items (ex. furniture) or trash in the hallways.
Instruction
As we prepare for the students, these are just a few reminders:
- Climate Walk-thrus will take place on Monday, be sure:
- Classrooms are warm and inviting
- Greet every student with a smile
- Set the positive tone within your classroom and building
- Complete Warrior Way Lessons
- Rosters - you will receive "two" rosters to use on Monday for:
- Attendance (First Week of School) - *IMPORTANT & REQUIRED
- 1st Roster....Take attendance for each student on your roster - "every" class period
- If the student is present, Place E1 beside their name
- If a student is absent, highlight name and write no-show beside the name
- Backpacks
- 2nd Roster....Backpacks were delivered to all 1st block teachers
- When you distribute the backpack, place a check beside the student's name
- Rosters will be collected
- Emergency Lesson Plans are required from all teachers. They should be turned in to the main office on Monday, August 19th.
Culture & Climate
A positive school culture & climate set the tone for our school while instilling our traditions, norms and routines. It is important to:
- Report to work on time
- Sign-in to Raptor (located in the main office)
- Dress Appropriately
- Professional Dress (Mon., Tues., & Thurs.)
- Wellness Wednesday - Comfortable Attire (Weds.)
- Casual Fridays - Henderson Gear (Fri.)
- Create Absences using Smartfind (See link below)
Things to Keep in Mind:
Volunteers are needed
- STEM Class Coverage
- Coverage is needed during 2nd, 3rd and 4th periods beginning on Monday, Aug. 19th
- Volunteers will receive paid compensation for missed planning time

- Extended Learning - Teachers
- In the event there is a high number of student absences that require students to make-up class assignments, we would like to offer opportunities for select students to make-up the assignments after school hours.
- Volunteers must be certified teachers and will receive paid compensation
- This program will begin on September 9th until the End of School Year
- Be available to consistently stay after school (Mon. - Thurs.) from 3:15pm until 5:00pm

Donations ($10), Culture & Climate, Sunshine Fund
- If you would like to make a donation, see Ms. Rozier in the main office. Cash only donations.
Afterschool Clubs
- If you would like to develop/offer an afterschool club, you should begin to develop an outline/offerings of the club. All approved clubs will be held afterschool. More information on submitting your request is forthcoming.
Comp. Time
- There may be a time in which your services are needed beyond your contractual agreement. To compensate, comp. time may be offered. Be on standby for more information.
Operations
Keys
Extra keys to your new classroom doors should be turned in to the main office. Key envelopes are available.
August Fire Drill
The first scheduled fire drill will take place on Friday, August 23rd. In preparation, teachers should have a copy of their current classroom roster with them at all times (indoors & outdoors). Teachers should escort classes to their designated outdoor locations quickly, quietly and in an orderly manner. The fire evacuation plan should be followed accordingly. *New teachers: check in with your grade level chairs if you require further clarity. Additional information can be found in the Henderson Presentation shared on Monday, August 12th.
Painting Touch-ups
Be mindful: Touch-up painting will take place over the next few days (walls, lockers, and etc.).
Surplus Request: Furniture & Other Items in the Hallway
Please do not place furniture or other surplus items in the hallways. Our custodial team is making every effort to maintain a conducive learning environment throughout the building. A work order is required to pick-up surplus items. Surplus items should be labeled. Surplus Request and all other custodial requests can be emailed to Crew Chief, Mr. W. Fernandez at wfernand@rvaschools.net. Be sure to check your student desks daily for any trash that need to be discarded. Your patience is always appreciated.

Security Camera
Be Aware: Security Cameras will be added and adjusted throughout the building over the next few weeks.
15/15 Rule - Bathrooms
To maintain smooth transitions and overall safety, bathrooms will be locked 15 minutes at the start of and 15 minutes prior to the end of each class period. Teachers and staff are asked to adhere to this rule daily. Bathrooms should be opened by teachers.
New Doors & Panels
We are very excited to have the new doors and panels added to all classrooms. Students are not allowed to kick, mishandle or vandalize doors, panels or walls. Such behaviors must be handled and reported promptly.
I.D. Badges
I.D. Badges are processed daily from 8:00am until 3:30pm. Location: Norrell Building. No appointment required.
