Week of April 8, 2024
Solar Eclipse Viewing
We are excited for the solar eclipse coming Monday, April 8th. Our hope is that the weather cooperates. Thank you to our PTA and the Sears family for making it possible for us to provide this experience for our students. Here are some details about that day and how it will look for students:
Date: Monday, April 8, 2024
Time: Peak Eclipse 3:14 PM
Pre-eclipse Resources:
Our teachers will be talking with students about the eclipse. The goal is to give all students an understanding of the event and how we can safely view it. We encourage you to also talk about the eclipse with your child. Here are some resources that we can all use to help explain:
“Totality” read by astronaut Steve Bowen, from space!
Timeline for April 8th:
The Moon will begin covering the Sun around 2:00 PM. We will not be viewing this entire process. We will only be outside, from 3:05 - 3:20 PM, to view the peak of the eclipse. Students will not have outdoor recess after 2:00 PM on this day to avoid the temptation to observe what is happening. Please be mindful that the eclipse event will continue during dismissal and children should be monitored by the adult picking them up.
2:45 - 3:00 PM:
Review the expectations: (Glasses will be distributed)
Students need to listen to adults at all times
Students should only view the sun/eclipse while wearing the glasses
The only time they should take the glasses off are when they are not viewing the eclipse
Have students pack up all belongings and be ready for dismissal. They can leave these items in the classrooms.
Special Note on Eclipse Glasses: The eclipse glasses that were purchased should not be used to view the sun after April 8th, or if they have been bent/damaged in any way. Teachers will talk with students about the importance of not bending glasses before use.
3:00 - 3:05 PM: Classes should come out to the large playground area for viewing. Depending on the conditions students can sit on the ground or stand. Classes should stick close together to allow adults to help monitor.
3:05 - 3:20 PM: Eclipse Viewing.
3:20 PM: Classes should return to the building and will be dismissed at 3:30 PM.
Students who are not participating in the eclipse viewing outside will be shown the livestream from NASA in our school cafeteria. They will also receive the glasses.
