Blue Valley Northwest
Principal's Newsletter - January 10, 2025
Dear Husky Families,
We are very glad we had a chance to welcome our Husky students back to begin 2nd semester yesterday and we're excited to dive into a full week of school next week to re-establish our routines! I hope everyone enjoyed their 4th snow day of the week today and stayed safe!
As we settle back in to our school routines, we want to remind everyone of the importance of arriving to school on time. We encourage students to leave home a bit earlier for school to ensure they can safely navigate the roads and still arrive on time. We always give grace here at the beginning of the semester and with the winter weather, but we can't continue to do so when students are late to 1st or 2nd hour on a regular basis.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to a successful semester ahead!
Sincerely,
Leah Vomhof
BVNW Principal

Attendance Reporting and Notifications
Families can expect automated attendance messages by email, phone, and text if a child is absent and their absence has not already been reported by a parent/guardian. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to report an absence or reply to the automated email or phone message.
What is the purpose of attendance notifications?
We realize that students may occasionally need to miss school for planned absences, illnesses, and appointments. However, when a student does not arrive at school or unexpectedly misses a portion of the school day, we are concerned and want to make sure you are aware that your child is absent.
How can I get push notifications?
Families who would also like a push notification can download the ParentVUE app and manage their notifications. If a child has an unreported absence when a teacher submits attendance, then a push notification will immediately be sent to the parent/guardian's mobile device.
Interested in push notifications? Simply download the ParentVUE app (iTunes app store or Google Play), enable push notifications in device settings and select attendance notifications through in-app settings. Once the app is downloaded, these instructions will help you complete the set-up.

Message From the AD
We hope you all enjoyed break! We also appreciate all your patience with changes in schedules, practice times, etc. as we are working around the weather. Be sure to follow @BVNW_Athletics on “X” (Twitter) for updates. You can also viewed up to date schedules by clicking the link: https://www.easternkansasleague.org/public/genie/997/school/9/date/2024-11-01/view/month/
The website “www.bvnwathletics.com” is INACCURATE and outdated. That website is going away at the end of the school year. We are working on keeping it updated, but please do not rely on that site. Instead, go to the Blue Valley Northwest homepage and then select athletics/activities: https://www.bluevalleyk12.org/domain/5413
As we begin to host EKL events:
REMINDER: Per our EKL Rule, anytime varsity is competing a gate will be charged for the entire evening. For example, if C team plays at 4:00 and varsity plays at 7:00, there will be a gate. You will have to pay to get into the C team game. Again, this is an EKL Rule.
Message from the Activities Department
I hope that all of our students and their families enjoyed some well-deserved rest and relaxation over this break. We have an incredible community at Northwest, and you all work hard to support and celebrate our academics, activities, and athletics. I’m so grateful to be a Husky with you. Thank you for all you do!
Celebrations (We realize this is not a comprehensive list of everything going on around Husky Nation, but we’ll try to share some highlights each week!)
We had 22 vocalists make the All-State Choir! Congratulations to these students! We had the most students from any single school in the state of Kansas!
Check out the December edition of Husky Headlines here! Thanks to the HH staff for their hard work producing this show!
Good luck to our thespians, who headed to the Kansas Thespian Festival in Wichita yesterday!

Repeating Information (already shared):
Personal Electronic Device Policy & Structured Expectations
As we get ready to launch another semester on January 6th, we appreciate your partnership. As you know, our staff has been hard at work this year implementing structured expectations for our school community along with how we teach and reinforce them in all settings.
Our structured expectations include language about our district’s personal electronic device policy. Students are expected to stow away their phone from bell to bell during each class and they may not take them out of the classroom if they leave to use the restroom in the middle of class. They may have them out during passing periods and at lunch.
Click here to read a few points about why structured expectations are important to our school.
ACT Prep Class
While not affiliated with or endorsed by BVNW, we wanted to let you know about a 2-session ACT prep class being held at Hilltop Conference Center the evenings of Jan. 29 and 30. Classes will meet from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. You can register here: http://actprep.info/bluevalleynw
State Assessments
State Assessments for sophomores and juniors will begin in April! More information to come. Please do your best to avoid scheduling appointments on these days so that testing is not disrupted. See “Important Dates” below for specific dates.
Group Photo Day
Group photo day is scheduled for Monday, January 13th. During the school day, various clubs will be called over the intercom to the NEW MAIN GYM to have their picture taken. The schedule for photos can be found here. BVNW and CAPS staff have been made aware that students may miss class time for photos. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer makeups for group photos.

Students and parents are invited to attend a CAPS Presentation and Tour. This is a series of one-hour evening presentations at the CAPS building, which is located on Blue Valley School District’s main campus. There will be information presented by CAPS Administrators and Instructors, a question and answer session and a tour.
Students who plan to enroll in a CAPS strand for the 25-26 school year are highly encouraged to attend an open house to confirm their interest before enrollment. Due to the district’s new schedule repair policy, please ensure your student is confident in their enrollment selection of CAPS.
