June 2024
Multicultural Calendar
Celebrate LGBT Pride Month which recognizes LGBT people and the contributions they have made to the world. It was selected as the month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. As a result of police raiding the Stonewall and other Greenwich Village lesbian and gay bars and becoming violent, members of the gay community in NYC protested.
June 2 – Indian Citizenship Act of 1924
While this act gave Native Americans American citizenship, they didn’t earn the right to vote until 1957.
June 12 – Loving Day
This day honors the anniversary of the court decision Loving V. Virginia that legalizes interracial marriage and struck down anti-miscegenation laws in 16 states at the time.
June 18 – International Day of Countering Hate Speech
This day was established in 2019 by the UN in response to rising trends of growing racism and xenophobia, antisemitism, and anti-Muslim hatred globally.
June 19 – Juneteenth
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of all African American slaves. It was first recognized as a federal holiday by President Joe Biden. It is this day that the last enslaved African Americans learned of their freedom nearly two years after it was issued.
June 22 – Windrush Day
First observed in the United Kingdom, Windrush Day honors African-Caribbean immigrants who came to the country during a labor shortage after World War II. The first immigrants suffered intolerance from the largely white population where blacks were banned from many pubs, clubs, and even churches.

Happy Retirement
Congratulations to John Leamy!
Your years of hard work have paid off, now time to enjoy this next part of your life. Happy retirement and best wishes!
Farewell and Best Wishes
Karl Blaeuer
Mr. Blaeuer is moving to Florida after this school year to be closer to family. He has been a permanent fixture in Corbett’s music program and we are going to miss him so much. Karl teaches our students with integrity, grace, and patience. He naturally models professionalism and high expectations, and his students rise to the occasion. Many students mentioned loving Karl’s end of the year parties, when he would tell personal stories about his life, and when he would teach them all the way to the thumb position. We will desperately miss Karl’s professionalism, kindness, and patience, but most of all we will miss his beautiful smile. Thank you Karl for always showing up for our students, you will be missed!!
Dr. Shelia Morgan-Osborne
Dr. Morgan Osborne came to Corbett from Oregon City. Prior to that she has lived many places, but considers Memphis home. In two short years in Corbett, Shelia has made a lasting positive impact on the lives of students and staff. Her smile and positive attitude brighten any room as soon as she enters. Her ability to manage curriculum and assessments, as well as state grants has moved the Corbett SD closer to our goal of #OneCorbett.
Unfortunately for us, Shelia’s husband, Dan, is moving his research to the University of Findlay in Ohio, thus forcing Shelia to leave Corbett. She is currently searching for the next district of students and staff that she can positively influence. On the bright side, Shelia will be within driving distance of her two sons and other family members. We wish her nothing but the best.
Mrs. Michelle Dawkins
Mrs. Dawkins is a Corbett SD staple. After 29 years, she is currently the longest tenured educator in Corbett. Michelle taught for 25 years in three different Grade School buildings, before deciding to move into administration as the Grade School principal. The past four years, Michelle has established a very strong culture of learning and collaboration in the Grade School.
Michelle has accepted a position as the Executive Director of the Mosier Community School. Her passion for and knowledge of place-based and multi-age learning will enhance the educational structures already in place in Mosier. Michelle has made a lasting impression on the entire Corbett community and will do the same for Mosier.
Michelle Dawkins
Interview with Michelle Carter Smith
Michelle Dawkins
Principal of Corbett Grade School
Born six years after her sister and six years before her brother, Michelle was born in Portland to her parents, Ray and Dorothy Dillard. Her dad was a finance manager for White Stag and then became a heavy equipment broker. Michelle's mom stayed home to raise the kids and later became a secretary at Pete Anderson Realty. Her parents have passed, and she remains close to her siblings who both live in Oregon.
Michelle said she was pretty shy as a child but always wanted to play outdoors with the neighbor kids. She took piano lessons from Mrs. Sheets, a neighbor who taught several kids who lived nearby. As she grew, Michelle played sports and loved being on the softball, tennis, and ski teams.
When she was in high school, Michelle was on the first David Douglas girl's soccer team. Just before her junior year, her family moved and she attended Barlow High School for her last two years and played high school tennis her junior and senior year.
After graduation, Michelle attended Mt. Hood Community College, knowing she would transfer to Western Oregon Univ. in Monmouth. As a child, she always knew she wanted to one day be a teacher, and was headed to Monmouth specifically for a teaching degree.
While attending Mt Hood CC, she began working at TJ's Athletics in Gresham. It was there she met her husband, Chris Dawkins. They became friends and then she left for school in Monmouth. Once Michelle graduated and earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education, she returned and she and Chris began dating. She graduated in May 1983 and they got married in July 1983!
After they got married, they rented a manufactured home across the road from the Corbett Post Office, paying $260 a month! Michelle and Chris worked at TJ's Athletics for another three years and during this time, their first child, Stephanie was born in 1985. In 1987, TJ's went out of business, so Michelle went to work at Kaiser Permanente as a pharmacy technician. Michelle helped to develop the first-ever pharmacy technician program for Kaiser Permanente in Oregon. This provided the first-ever certification program. Michelle stayed 10 years with Kaiser, and during this time, in 1988, Joe was born. Chris went to work for Weyerhaeuser which later became International Paper and retired in 2021.
In 1994, Michelle left Kaiser Permanente to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. She substituted mostly for Corbett for a year and then was hired full-time for a 2nd-grade teaching position in the 1995-1996 school year. In 2000-2001, Michelle's class became the first multi-age classroom at Corbett. The following year, the Corbett Grade School became all multi-age. Currently, three of Michelle's former students are full-time teachers at the grade school!
In 2020, DeeDee Hames retired and moved to Alaska, and Michelle was hired to become the new Corbett Grade School Principal. When both of Michelle's kids were in school at Corbett, she and Chris were actively involved with Corbett Youth Sports. They both felt strongly that it was important for students to have a connection with other students and an opportunity.
Stephanie graduated from Corbett High School in 2003 and Joe graduated in 2006. Both attended Corbett schools all the way through and Michelle was grateful to be involved with her kids and many other students, each step of the way.
In 2018, Michelle and Chris purchased a home in Hood River and moved to live there in 2021 to be near their adult kids, their spouses, and grandkids. They have a 5-year-old grandson and two granddaughters, ages three and two. All of the grandkids have birthdays within the same week!
Being a principal at the grade school in Corbett has been a dream come true for Michelle as she continues to connect with teachers, staff, students, and their families to further strengthen the commitment to educating children in the best way possible. Recently, on her birthday, all students and staff lined the halls to sing "Happy Birthday" to Mrs. Dawkins. She said that was something she would never forget!
Michelle desires to be closer to her family and recently accepted a position at Mosier Community School as the Executive Director. It was not an easy decision to make. Still, it is a multi-age, placed-based school of 155 students, so it is an incredible opportunity to be involved in an educational opportunity that Michelle is excited about.
There are numerous photo albums created over the many years at Corbett Grade School that Michelle will be taking with her, fondly remembering the connections made and memories created. Chris is now busy watching grandkids and doing research to write a book. Michelle looks forward to being closer to home so she can spend even more time with the grandkids and also ski, hike, and paddleboard with her family. They have a second home on Mt. Hood where they love spending time and also traveling. "It is a good life!"

Welcome to Corbett!
6th Grade Teacher
My name is L Beeson, and I’m so excited to be starting as a sixth grade teacher in the fall. Students call me L. I am coming to Corbett after three years teaching math and science in the Reynolds School District. Before completing my Masters in Teaching at Pacific University, I spent seven years working in pediatric neurology research labs at Rush University in Chicago, and then at OHSU in Portland. I live with my wife, daughter, dogs, cats, and chickens on a small farm in Corbett, where we grow lots of veggies and play lots of music. I’m so grateful for this opportunity to serve in this beautiful community, which has welcomed us so warmly, and I’m thrilled to continue working with sixth graders, who I’ve found to be curious, adventurous, and creative. My teaching philosophy is rooted in shared inquiry, and I’m so excited to start exploring the world together.

High School Track and Field
Our HS Track and Field season was one of Corbett's most successful seasons in recent memory. Ava Blatchford and Olivia McGrew represented Corbett at the State Championship Track Meet at Hayward Field. In addition, many athletes were recognized for their performances at our League Championship meet.
Even more important than our athletes' success on the track or at their field events was their conduct and their interactions with others. Our Corbett athletes represented not only themselves and their team well, but they reflected positively on our school and our community.
We are losing a strong group of seniors (16 in total including our captains Olivia McGrew, Ava Blatchford, Nathan Mack and Joey Kirnan and two other two-time State Meet qualifiers, Sophie Bergkvist and Cyrus Kurkinen), but we've laid a strong foundation for success in the years to come. We're looking forward to the coming seasons.

Happy Summer!
Summer is only a week away! We hope all our students have a relaxing time with family and friends.
Many students will be participating in water sports. Please use life vests when going to a river or a lake. Life vests are available at many of these sites.
The incoming seventh graders will need to have their DTaP booster or exclusion turned into the school for the coming 2024-2025 school year. Please see the immunization schedule below to check what your kindergarten student will need this Fall.
Have a safe and happy summer!

SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES
Multnomah Education Service District
Dear Parents/Guardians:
It is our hope that your student will have a happy and healthy school experience. Students who
have a well-balanced diet, get sufficient sleep, and get regular exercise generally have a better
school experience.
Registered nurses (RNs) and other MESD support staff will be assisting your student throughout
the school year. The RN assigned to your student’s school will be in the building an average of
one day a week. The RN will:
- Coordinate health plans for students who have chronic health conditions
- Please notify the school nurse if your student has a health condition or you have medical information to share about your student.
- Assist with communicable disease control
- Provide direct nursing care to students who become ill or injured at school in partnership
with trained school staff
Oregon State Law regarding immunization requirements for Pre-K and Kindergarten are:
One dose of each school required vaccine (age appropriate) or an appropriately signed
medical or non-medical exemption is required at initial attendance/enrollment.
- Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis
- Polio
- Varicella or chickenpox disease history
- Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
- Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B
- Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (Hib) required only for students younger than 5 years old
A state Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) form must be completed and returned to school
upon enrollment. To claim a non-medical exemption, a parent/guardian must either view the web
based videos regarding immunization information, OR discuss immunizations with their
healthcare provider and submit a certificate of completion along with the signed CIS form.
However, School Health Services recommends that all children receive required vaccinations
according to established schedules, unless a medical reason warrants otherwise.
Students should be kept at home when they are ill to help speed recovery and prevent the
spread of illness/disease. Please keep in mind that some circumstances may require a medical
release for your student to return to school. State law requires that a student remain home with:
- Temperature of 100.4 or greater until fever free for 24 hours without medication.
- Diarrhea/Vomiting until free of symptoms for 48 hours.
- Rash until cleared by a healthcare provider or the rash resolves.
- Eye redness and drainage until symptom free or cleared by a healthcare provider.
Please notify your school if your student is diagnosed with a contagious disease.
If we can be of any help in making your student’s school experience a healthy one, please do
not hesitate to call School Health Services at (503) 257-1732.
