MESSAGE FROM DR. NEAL:
Please take a moment to complete the parent interest career exploration survey. I want to host a Career Fair for our students, but I want to solicit help from our parents. If I cannot get enough parents interested, I will have to consider plan B. Unfortunately, I don't have a plan B right now. Date for the Career Exploration—date pending.
COUNSELING CORNER
Melody Osborne, School Counselor
7th grade and 6th grade: HM/PLT with Science and Social Studies
Belinda Hotchkiss, School Counselor
8th grade and 6th grade: HM/PLT with ELA and Math teachers
Counseling Corner:
"As we are surrounded by everything digital, here are a couple of suggestions to help your student with “digital manners.”
"Before your student sends a text, post, or email, suggest that they ask themselves, “Is this nice? Would I say it in person?” If the answer to either question is no, it’s a good idea to reword. Tip: If they feel the need to type a disclaimer like “No offense, but…” they probably shouldn’t hit “send.”

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Susan K. Purcell-Orleck, SEL Facilitator
"A bad grade. A forgotten assignment. A missed bus. An extracurricular screw up. Whatever it is, failure isn’t easy for the struggling middle school student. It’s pretty tough for the parents too. Still, learning to deal with life’s ups and downs is important. In fact, our adolescents must experience these challenges. Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair, clinical psychologist and author, has advice. She knows how to guide parents to raise strong, savvy, and resilient children. Steiner-Adair offers three effective parenting tips for you to consider when it comes to middle school help."

MEIGS OCTOBER TEACHER OF THE MONTH!
MR. PARSONS
STUDENT COUNCIL
SECOND HARVEST FOOD DRIVE
We really NEED your help with the Second Harvest Food Drive. This is a drive that makes a huge impact every year in the fight against hunger. PLEASE send in donations next week. The drive ends October 4th. If every student brought in 4 or 5 items, we would have over 3000 items. That would help so many!
Needed items are non-perishables like canned food, pasta, rice, cereals, soups, stews, and peanut butter.
PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH CONTEST
Amanda Little, writing professor from Vanderbilt University, extended an invitation to our students to participate in this year's Presidential Speech Contest.
The contest is open to all Tennessee students in 4th through 8th grades and asks kids to write and perform their own presidential speeches -- submitting 3-minute videos in which they describe their America and give voice to the kind of leadership they want to see in the next four years. Finalists will be invited to present their speeches with Ann Patchett at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville on October 26!
This is a great, non-partisan opportunity for your students to share their powerful voices and ideas during the presidential election season.
For details and instructions on how to enter, see our landing page. And for inspiration, please check out this short video montage from our previous presidential speech contest!
FALL PICTURE DAY ~ OCTOBER 3, 2024

LAPTOP REMINDERS
Students, please remember the laptop expectations. Students are expected to bring their laptop and charger to school daily. Ms. Purcell-Orleck uses a great strategy for this. When she shuts down her laptop at night, she plugs it in to the charger but places the laptop in her backpack. So, the next morning, it’s already in her backpack, and she just has to unplug the charger and place that in her backpack as well.
We have also had at least 15 cases of cracked screens since the start of the school year! Please remember that students are held responsible, even when damages are accidental. Please review the LAPTOP POLICY PRESENTATION we went over at the beginning of the year.

Students who currently have lost items on their account will be given a reading log. Additional logs can be picked up from the library, and they are also attached below. Reading logs must be returned to Ms. Tucker-Dye by Tuesday, October 15.
