We are excited to welcome families into our building this week for winter conferences this Thursday and Friday, February 9th and 10th. Our conference appointment system is open and all families should have received an email with instructions on how to sign up. If you did not receive this email, or have any questions, please reach out to Ben Horwitz - benhorwitz@winnetka36.org. Please note that the scheduling system will close at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, February 7th. All appointments must be made before the system closes.

As a reminder, parents can choose to schedule either in-person or virtual appointments. If you see room numbers listed for your appointments, you have scheduled in-person conferences. If you see Zoom links, those are virtual appointments. If you have accidentally scheduled the wrong type of appointment, please reach out to Mr. Horwitz.

If you will be holding your appointments over Zoom, please make sure that your name is easily identifiable so that our teachers know whom to let in. We would suggest using your child’s name to eliminate any confusion. If you are coming to Washburne, please enter through our main entrance.

We are counting down the days to the 2023 Dance Marathon on March 3, 2023 from 3:30-5:30pm. Our community is playing an important role in the advancement of care and treatment at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Through the Washburne/Skokie Dance Marathon program which will be hosted the students will come together to raise vital funds to support the nearly 223,000 patients that Lurie Children’s treats annually, as well as build awareness for health issues that affect children.

Generous support from Washburne/Skokie Dance Marathon program contributes directly to this mission and to the care and comfort of the children. In 2020, our last in-person event raised over $ 42,000 dollars for the patients and families at Lurie Children’s

Thank you to all of our 8th grade families who have signed up for a scheduling conference with New Trier on Monday, February 13th. Parents should enter the school through the gym entrance off the Elm St. parking lot and go directly to the North Gym.

If your conference is during school hours, we will send your child to meet you in the gym. If your conference is after school, please bring your child with you. Parents should arrive approximately 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment to ensure that we stay on schedule.

Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.

Project-based learning continues to be a priority at Washburne this year with many different teachers implementing innovative ideas. In Mr. Pappas’s 7th grade science class, students have embarked on a project to help them learn more about human body systems. Individually, students have set personal goals for themselves, taking their areas of interests and setting an improvement goal. For example, some students are hoping to improve at sports, such as improving their free throw shooting, while other students are trying to become better artists. In order to achieve their goals, students are studying how the human body and specific systems, such as cardio-vascular or muscular-skeletal, are responsible for the things they want to do. Over the next two weeks, students are tracking their progress and working hard to achieve their goals.

Kudos to Mr. Pappas and his students for implementing another fantastic example of project-based learning.

In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.

Students have had an amazing month of movement and fun in KW. We recently turned the north gym into a bowling alley and 7th grade students learned how to bowl properly and how to score without the use of technology. 7th Grade students are also using our heart rate monitors and learning about each training zone and what they mean. 8th grade students are learning to identify each muscle group and they are resistance training in KW. They also learned a new sport called Team Handball. Team Handball is a combination of basketball and soccer and our students have had a blast playing this sport. Lastly, all students have had the opportunity to roller skate this week using traditional four wheel roller skates. The students were taught how to forward skate, backward skate, crossovers, turns and several tricks.

The CW Broadcasting Club is open for registration on the District Web Store.

Students! Come and be a part of the CWB Club and produce news segments for our school's YouTube News Channel. Whether you want to be in front of the camera or behind the scenes, there is a role for you! No experience is necessary; all you need is an interest in learning how to produce a news broadcast.

Come join Mr. Selgrat and the crew to build your skills using our professional studio equipment in the Washburne TV Studio. The CW Broadcast Club, Session II will be Wednesdays, after school from 3:30pm - 4:30pm, beginning February 1st, 2023 through May 24th for a total of 16 meetings.

A D36 Parent's Guide to the New Trier Transition

Paul Waechtler, Principal at the New Trier High School Freshman Campus, and Lori Worth, 8th Grade Transition Faculty, will discuss the New Trier freshman placement process and the efforts made to ensure a smooth transition to high school. Director of Innovation, Teaching, and Learning Dr. Becky Mathison hosted this information session about the acceleration policy. The acceleration policy provides the opportunity for parents, students, and licensed educational professionals to request that accelerated programming be examined for an individual student. The policy identifies acceleration as: early entrance in Kindergarten, early entrance into 1st grade, single-subject acceleration (any subject), and grade-level acceleration. The content included a review of the purpose of the acceleration policy and a preview of updated procedures this year. Please note that the New Trier Math program and Washburne accelerated math are not a part of this policy. Thank you to the parents and community members that attended the WPI event about the acceleration policy on January 25.

Attendees were provided a draft copy of the acceleration request form in order to provide feedback before the form goes live on March 6. If you would like to provide feedback, please review the draft of the form here. Feedback that is specific and aligned to a particular question would be most helpful. Consider which items need to be changed, looked at further, or improvements. Please share your feedback with Dr. Becky Mathison at beckymathison@winnetka36.org by Friday, February 10.

Our Primary Program provides activities for children Pre-K (4 years old by June 1st, 2023) and K-1st grade (5 years old by September 1st, 2022) and will be held at Crow Island. Classes will be as varied as wilderness skills, archery, tennis, science, cooking, and many types of crafts​...along with the annual favorite, Animal Care.

Registration will go live in March.

Registration for incoming kindergarteners and students new to The Winnetka Public Schools in 2023-2024 is now open on the District website and via https://registration.powerschool.com/family/gosnap.aspx?action=30658&culture=en. Children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2023, are eligible to enroll.

The new student registration process is completed in three steps:

1. Complete new student pre-registration forms online beginning November 16, 2022.

2. Provide the original or certified copy of your child(ren)'s birth certificate and a parent photo ID. The certified copy can be submitted in person at the District Office. If you have the original birth certificate, you may bring it to the District Office to be photocopied. The District Office is at 1235 Oak St., Winnetka.

3. Provide proof of residency and paper registration forms. For your convenience, all required residency documents may be uploaded during online registration. Click here to view the list of documents that will meet these requirements as well as the other forms required for registration (Registration Forms & Information).

Children will not be considered enrolled until both the online and paper portion of registration has been completed and residency documentation is verified. If you have any questions, please contact the District Office at 847-446-9400.
