Ducks Update
Back to School Edition
January 23, 2025
A Note from Ms. de Boom-Howard
Davis Duck Families,
I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with your Ducks! It is hard to believe we are already in the middle of January! I am looking forward to next week as the Duck Dash is here!! The team from Booster is on campus getting our students excited with visits to the classroom and handing out prizes. Join us for Duck Dash announcements tomorrow at Flag Deck.
To kick off the new year with intention, many classes across campus are taking part in a special activity by selecting their "One Word" for 2025. This word acts as a personal guide and source of inspiration throughout the year, helping students align their goals with our shared values. By kicking off the year focusing on our Five Core Values and setting purposeful intentions, we can work together to help our students grow into thoughtful, capable, and compassionate individuals.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We look forward to seeing you at the Duck Dash on the 31st.
Go Ducks!

Core Value of the Week
Treat others the way you want to be treated
This core value is simple yet profound, encouraging us to foster kindness, respect, and empathy in all that we do. When we embrace this value, we create a safe and welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. Whether it's lending a helping hand, offering words of encouragement, or showing patience and understanding, small acts of kindness have a big impact.
Here are some ways we can practice this value every day:
Listen Actively: Take time to understand others' perspectives.
Show Gratitude: Express appreciation for others’ efforts.
Be Inclusive: Make everyone feel welcome, valued, and respected.
Lead by Example: Model the behavior you wish to see in others.
This week, let’s challenge ourselves to embody this principle, on campus, at home and in the community. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels supported and inspired to do their best.
Important Information
Reminders on Drop Off and Pick Up
The safety and well-being of our students are a top priority. Please be mindful of your speed while driving through the neighborhood to Gate 3.
Gate 2 is for our school buses and SCC drop off/pick up. Please do not park there waiting for students.
Kinder Round Up
We’re excited to announce that the Kindergarten Roundup for all new incoming kindergartners will be held on Tuesday, January 28th, starting at 4:30 PM! This is a wonderful opportunity for families to learn more about the upcoming school year, meet teachers, and get important information about registration and school readiness.
Please help us spread the word to families in the community who have children ready for kindergarten! We can’t wait to welcome the newest members of our school family!
Davis Lottery Application Period Opens Feb 10th
For more information, please visit our website: Applying to Davis.
Attendance Reminders
Cold and flu season is here, and our health office is reporting a high number of students coming to school while sick. To help prevent the spread of illness, please perform a health check at home before sending your child to school. If your student isn’t feeling well, kindly keep them home to rest and recover. Remember, if your child has had a fever or has been vomiting, they must remain home and be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school (for more details, see page 19 of the Parent and Student Handbook). As always, please report absences through the attendance line or the attendance form.
Tardies:
If your students arrive late, kindly accompany them to the office to sign them in. Once the gates are closed, there is no supervision outside to monitor the gates. Thank you!!
We ask that, in the spirit of promoting good health, we aim to limit any absences that are not illness-related. Regular attendance is essential for student success, and we’re excited to encourage this effort. This month, we will be awarding Cane’s certificates to the class with the most improved attendance from December through the end of January. Let’s work together to ensure our students stay healthy and present in class!
Battery Recycling
It’s time for Costa Mesa Sanitary District’s Battery Recycling Contest! Each year, schools collect batteries for recycling and earn money for their school at the same time! Please help us by sending in your used batteries to add to the box.
Here are the rankings as of today. Davis Magnet is in 3rd place. Help us move to #1.
1. Sonora Elementary
2. Estancia High School
3. Davis Magnet Elementary
4. St. Joachim Catholic School
5. Wilson Elementary
