Ms. Porter's Monthly Message
We’re thrilled to kick off the school year with great news—our school has proudly earned an A-rated status, a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and community. Our theme this year is "NHE is Out of This World," capturing the spirit of excellence and exploration that defines our school.
As we embark on this exciting journey together, we encourage you to partner with us by supporting your child’s learning at home. Please ensure that your child completes their i-Ready lessons each week, as these are crucial in helping them stay on track with their academic goals.
We have a variety of events lined up this month, so be sure to stay informed by checking school communications regularly. Don’t miss out on the PTA Papa John’s Fundraiser—your participation helps support our initiatives, including a new marquee and updates to the PE blacktop.
We look forward to an exciting and productive year ahead, filled with learning, growth, and achievement!

Dear Nob Hill Parents and Families,
It has been an exciting and smooth start to what promises to be a fantastic school year! It has been wonderful to meet all the students and families, and I am looking forward to working with everyone this year.
The school opens at 7:30 AM, and the school day begins promptly at 7:55 AM. Ensuring your child arrives on time is crucial, as important learning activities happen early in the day when students are most alert. The school day ends at 2:00 PM. We understand that traffic can be challenging. Please plan accordingly and follow the established traffic patterns. To help with traffic flow, make sure to drop off and pick up in the correct loops each morning. Remember, the Soccer Park Gate into Nob Hill closes every morning promptly at 7:55 AM.
Communication is essential, and we are committed to staying connected with our students, parents, families, and community. Please check your email each week for an e-mail from me titled Weekly E-News which will include updates and school events. We also encourage you to visit our website regularly for announcements, information, and celebrations.

Unit: Back to School
This unit introduces students to the roles and responsibilities of family and community members, such as those at home and in school. The students will sort to show a rule or not a rule. This month, students will as well be working with the letters/sounds Aa, Mm, Pp, Tt; the numbers 0-3; the colors red, blue, purple, yellow; and the shapes square, circle, triangle, rectangle.
Specialized program
We will be discussing everything about school, friends, and ALL about me (how to stay safe at school and how to be a good friend). We will have an overview of all the letters in the alphabet and then focus on the letters/sounds Ww and Pp. We will clap words and sentences. We will have an overview of all the colors; we will sort; and will complete and/or make patterns. We will also begin assessing all the students.
In VPK we will continue enjoying our beginning of the year unit learning about school including names, rules, and feelings. We will then begin our unit on clothes. We will continue to be busy doing our initial screenings and assessments and parent conferences will be scheduled after that. Hope to see you at our Open House.

Kindergarten is ready to blast off! Students are adjusting well to the rules, new routines, and getting to know their school family. In math, students are learning to count, model and write numbers 1-5. In ELA, students are working on foundations, letter formation, rhyming words, expository writing, poems and so much more. In science, students are learning about properties of objects. In social studies, students are learning how to be a good citizen. Please make sure to sign up for your child’s class communication app! We can’t wait to have an OUT OF THIS WORLD year!
1st
First grade is so excited to be learning together this school year! So far, we have been focusing on classroom rules and procedures and reviewing what we know from kindergarten. In reading we are starting to learn about short vowel sounds and story elements. In math we are learning about addition and subtraction within 10. In science we are learning about the nature of science and classifying matter. In social studies we are learning about past, present, and future. We are looking forward to seeing you all on September 4th at 6:00pm for Open House!
2nd
Second grade has a lot of fun things happening! The kids are already starting to form new friendships with each other and learning their classroom rules and expectations. After creating our classroom rules, the students had a blast having ownership of their classroom expectations. In math, we are learning how to spot addition patterns, inverse operations, and foundations in addition and subtraction. In ELA, we are reviewing short vowel sounds, finding central idea, and so much more. 2nd grade is out of this world!
3rd
Third grade has had an excellent start to the school year. The classes have learned the rules and routines, adjusted to switching teachers halfway through the day, and are making friends and building bonds. The students completed their iReady diagnostic assessments in August and in the month of September they will take their first FAST math and reading assessments. These assessments are used to help the teachers determine each student’s strengths and areas for improvement. After all of the beginning of the year assessments are completed, teachers will be beginning conferences in October to share the information with parents and work together as a team to ensure each child has a successful school year. In September, students will continue to learn about multiplication & division in math, classifying matter in science, maps in social studies, central idea and relevant details, identifying text structure, and context clues in reading. The third grade teachers are excited for the school year and are ready to help each child blast off into learning!
4th
4th grade is working on getting to know our Amazing new students. We will be taking the FAST beginning of the year assessments for math and reading this month. In Reading, we will be working on central idea and key details, and author’s claim/ perspective by analyzing various informational texts in Benchmark Advanced. In math, we are focusing on multiplying and dividing numbers. In science we began learning how scientists solve problems using the scientific method. Students will be conducting their first scientific investigations, exploring the nature of science concepts through hands on activities and demonstrations. We are looking forward to an "Out of this World" school year for 4th Grade!
5th
Hello 5th grade families,
The year is off to a great start! We are excited for an unforgettable 5th grade year, with lots of fun and learning.
In reading our students have been working on beginning of the year procedures like choosing a book for independent reading, small group expectations, and responding to writing. In our next unit we will work on identifying the central idea, author’s claim, and structure as we answer the essential question ‘How do we decide which resources we should develop?’
In math we just finished topic one on whole number and decimal place value. Our next topic will involve adding and subtracting decimals.
In science, we’ve been learning all about how scientists investigate the world around us. We’ve flown paper planes to learn the importance of the scientific method, and identifying the control and experimental group in a controlled experiment. Up next will be matter! Please be on the lookout for a letter from Ms. Ardo requesting some materials.
We will also have our first field trip on October 15 to JA Biz Town. Thank you to those parents that have volunteered to chaperone this trip. More information will be coming.
