Math
We did not have math class every day this week, as we had Forward testing in the morning and concert rehearsal in the afternoon. The days we did have math, we worked more with unit fractions. We learned how to order unit fractions from least to greatest. The students realized that ordering fractions is opposite than ordering whole numbers. They realized that the reason why is because the larger the denominator of a fraction, the smaller the unit fraction is. If a whole is being split into tenths, the unit fraction will be much smaller than if we are splitting a whole into thirds.
We also learned how to create addition and subtraction problems within one whole to equal a fraction. For example, we learned that 10/12 could be written as 5/12 + 5/12. It could also be written as 8/12 + 2/12 and many others! We could also show 10/12 as 12/12-2/12.
Social Studies
We talked about how our Wisconsin state government looks very similar to our federal government. We discussed that our state has a man like the president, and he is called our governor. We also talked about state senators and representatives and how they compare to the senators and representative that work in the United States Congress.
Language Arts from Mrs. Edwards
Reading: This week in Reading we were a little off schedule. Both classes were taking the Forward State Test (Science and Social Studies) and practicing for our Spring Concert. The students did an amazing job at the concert! Thank you for taking time to support all of your child’s hard work in music.
The students were still able to get a little research in and begin our new read aloud, The Thief Lord. On Friday, the students worked hard to finish their book club discussion and their final project. Next week, the students will be taking their Language Arts Forward Exam on Monday and Tuesday.
Writing: We managed to start our new essay unit, persuasive writing, this week. The students started by turning their personal essay thesis statements into a thesis that could relate to the entire world, not just themselves. For example, we turned “My dad is my most important teacher,” to “Dads are important teachers,” or “Parents are important teachers.” We learned that it is important for us to know our audience and to make sure their could be people that would disagree with our statement. The students ended the week by filling out their outline and starting their first draft. Oh! And...please make sure to ask your child about their “spelling” test today.
