The very special award is given to high school senior swimmers, divers and water polo players across the country who have proven to not only be among the best athletically but have also demonstrated a sustained high level of academic achievement over the course of their entire high school career. These four Polar Bears achieved a Cumulative Weighted GPA of 93.75% (or 3.75 points) or higher and consistently demonstrated a commitment to the success of the Northern Swimming and Diving team. U.S. Youth Fly Fishing National Championships
Northern High School freshman, Will Brown, recently competed in the U.S. Youth Fly Fishing National Championships, held on March 22nd through March 23rd, 2025, in State College, Pennsylvania. Will placed an impressive 5th out of 24, as a first-time competitor at this event amongst other top anglers from across the country. In doing so, he secured one of the twelve coveted spots on the U.S. Youth Fly Fishing Team and is currently the youngest member of the team.
With this achievement, Will is a candidate to be chosen to compete in the U.S. Youth Fly Fishing World Championships later this year. The US is hosting Worlds this year, taking place in Idaho on the legendary Snake River. Only 6 members of Team USA will be chosen for this event.
Will’s success is the result of his passion for the sport, dedication to learning and countless hours of practice to improve. Student Represents Northern at PMEA Region V Choral Festival
Nicholas Keilholtz proudly represented Northern High School at the PMEA Region V Choral Festival, held March 20th through March 21st, 2025, at the Bethlehem Area School District. This prestigious event brought together the top high school vocalists from PMEA District 7 and District 10 for an intensive two-day festival under the direction of Dr. Bryan Nichols of Penn State University.
Throughout the festival, the choir tackled challenging and dynamic repertoire, featuring works by Brahms, Gabrieli, Haydn, Whitacre, Hagenburg, and more. These selections demanded both technical precision and emotional depth, and under Dr. Nichols’ expert leadership, the ensemble delivered an outstanding performance. The festival concluded with a public concert on Friday, March 21st, at 7:30 PM, where parents, friends, and family had the opportunity to experience the choir’s remarkable work.
A huge congratulations to Nick for his incredible achievement—placing 3rd in the Tenor 2 section, earning him a spot in the PMEA All-State Choral Festival at the Kalahari Convention Center in April. This honor is a true reflection of his dedication, talent, and hard work. Way to go, Nick!
PA FFA Holds State Legislative Leadership Conference
Beginning on Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, four Gifford Pinchot FFA seniors traveled to Harrisburg to attend the State Legislative Leadership Conference held by the Pennsylvania FFA. Maysen Bankert, Aly Brown, Taylor Lenhart, and Kennedy Nelson attended a variety of workshops to learn about Advocacy, Dinner Etiquette, the rules of Parliamentary Procedure, and How to Network. The bulk of the conference was spent moving through and learning the process of how a bill becomes a law. The four seniors, along with the rest of the attendees, were assigned to a bill currently being debated amongst the Pennsylvania House and Senate. To wrap up the conference, our members were fortunate enough to have breakfast with our local Representative, Marc Anderson and Senator, Dawn Keefer and discuss current happenings within our state legislative branch.

Hearts of Gold at NES
Northern Elementary School goes above and beyond once again raising over $23,000.00 for the American Heart Association. The cubs at NES have a strong sense of community and intrinsic desire to help. They were beyond excited to participate in another year, raising funds to help kids with sick hearts.
These cubs had another record-breaking year! They have raised more funds than ever before at NES. Not only that, but they also had more students register for the free online educational resources. Most importantly, more students have completed Finn's mission than ever before, learning basic hands only CPR and gaining confidence in life saving skills!
Our cubs are currently ranked NUMBER 7 in the entire state of Pennsylvania! That is out of every single school (thousands) participating in the Kids Heart Challenge! We are so proud of their hard work and their heart work!

Inclement Weather School Closing and Delays for 2024/2025
When weather conditions dictate that unscheduled closings, delays, or early dismissals are in the best interest of student and staff safety, the District will use several communication channels to notify parents, students, and staff as quickly as possible. Notifications for each weather-related event will specify whether extracurricular activities including athletic games and practices will be canceled for the day.
Communication:
- Blackboard Alert Messaging System – Notification will be sent via automated phone calls and emails
- District Website – Information will be posted as an on-screen alert when you visit the District website at www.northernpolarbears.com
- Social Media – Information will be shared on the District’s Twitter feed @NorthernYorkSD
- Other – Details will also be reported to local radio and television stations
School Closing Directions:
- For the first winter-weather closing, students and staff will have a “traditional snow day” – that is, there will be no instruction and all students and staff will simply be off. This first snow day will not need to be made up by students.
- For the second and additional winter-weather closings, we will have virtual snow days – that is, instruction will take place at home and will be provided through remote learning. Each principal will be following up with families about what instructional delivery will look like on virtual snow days.
Wishing everyone a safe and fun winter season.
