Make A Wish
We will be hold our annual Make A Wish fundraiser January 27th- 31st. This is a fundraiser that is near and dear to many people in the primary building. As most of you know, our very own Ashley Lavender's daughter Hudsyn is a cancer survivor. She was granted her wish last year due to the generosity of our community. We are coming together again this year to hopefully grant another wish...or 2 or 3...to a deserving child. Please share with your friends and family that our school is raising money and ask them if they plan to give, to give through your child. I am including the Make A Wish Mission for you to read, courtsey of the Make A Wish Website.
Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
What's Happening in Special Classes?
CAT TIME
Teacher: Jessica Riley
January CAT Time looks a little frozen. We will work to create snowball launchers and make snow that won't melt indoors. Your kiddos will also learn that no two snowflakes are alike, symmetry, and crystallizing a classroom snowflake. We will learn about the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his impact on our society. Finishing up January we will learn about animal hibernation and migration.
LIBRARY
Teacher: Dana Gamble
A New Year brings New Things happening in the Library! This month the Kindergarten students will be reviewing how to care for their books. Our new skill this month will be how to pick just the right book for ourselves and checking out books. Beginning in February, Kindergarten students will be able to check out one book per week. Students will keep their books in their classroom and return them the following week during their Library Special Class time. If your child accidentally brings home their library book, please remind them to keep it at school and return it as soon as possible. Get Ready…. Book Fair returns in February!!
PE
Teacher: Shane Duncan
I hope everyone had such an enjoyable and relaxing break. January is one of my favorite times in PE. When we come back from the break we will spend most of the month playing on our scooters. This activity is usually one of the most loved activities we do all year. I cannot wait to see how much the kids love this activity.
ART
Teacher: Megan Jones
In the month of January for Art, students will be learning about patterns. Students will create an artwork that reflects knowledge of patterns in the real world. We will be using multiple mediums to help improve our tactile skills as well.
MUSIC
Teacher: Kari Metheny
In the month of January, kindergarteners will be learning about the treble clef, musical staff, & the line and space notes in music class.
Counselor's Corner
At Brookland Primary, we believe in the power of kindness and the joy of giving back. That’s why we are raising money for Make-A-Wish, an incredible organization that brings hope, strength, and happiness to children facing critical illnesses. By supporting this cause, we aim to help make life-changing wishes come true, bringing smiles and unforgettable experiences to children and their families.
Last year, Brookland Primary came together in an extraordinary way and surpassed our fundraising goal of $10,000. Because of your generosity and support, we were able to grant a life-changing wish to a deserving child, creating a moment of joy that will be cherished forever. This year, we are confident we can do it again!
Together, as a school community, we can create a lasting impact and show the true meaning of compassion. Join us in meeting our goal and making dreams a reality, one wish at a time! Scan the QR code below to donate online. You can also send cash or check (made payable to Make-A-Wish) in your child's folder. Please make sure to include your child's name on an envelope for the donation.
What's New in Pre-School for 2024!!
Happy New Year! This month Pre-K classrooms will be reviewing rules and expectations, as well as exploring fun topics such as Winter, Ice, Snow, and Arctic Animals. We will review math concepts like counting, shapes, and position words, and continue working on literacy skills, including letter identification and name writing. Please check your child's daily folder for detailed information about upcoming activities specific to their class.
Please remember that we will go outside each morning when the wind chill is 33 degrees or higher and it is not actively raining, so don't forget to send your child with weather-appropriate clothing, including a heavy coat and mittens. Also, be sure your child has a weather-appropriate change of clothing to keep in the classroom in case of accidents. Please label all items with your child's name.
Kindergarten News!!
Welcome Back! We are so excited to start this second semester with your student. The second semester of kindergarten is where we really see the "light bulbs" come on and all of they skills we taught first semester start to come together. This is the semester where we see the biggest gains in academic performance. You should see your student begin to blend CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonat) words together such as pat, pan, mat, pot, dad, dog, etc. Then, very quickly you will see them reading short sentences. This semester you will also see growth in writing simple sentences, addition and subtraction skills, and reading comprehension. As you can see this is a very exciting semester for your student. Please make sure you are checking your student's folder every night and reading your classroom newsletter every week so you are on top of what your student is doing in class.
A Message from the Principal....
Welcome back students and families! We hope everyone had a wonderful break. Here are a few reminders now that it's winter:
- We do not have the option of using AMI days if we are out for winter weather. Snow days are built into the calendar. If we dismiss for winter weather, we will notify parents in multiple ways. Please make sure we have accurate phone numbers and contacts.
- Please make sure to wash your child's backpack, blankets and stuffed animals often. Germs spread easier in the winter when we remain indoors more often.
- Car line is ending WELL before 3:30 now. Make sure that you are here in line before 3:20.
- Please continue to check your child's folder daily. Important notes and communications are frequently inside folders.
- Do not send your child to school if they have been sick within the last 24 hours. Our little ones spread germs easily and we want to keep everyone healthy. If in doubt about whether or not your child should be at school, please call Nurse Maegan at any time.
Now that school is back in session, we will be working hard to learn the remaining skills for kindergarten and first grade. We want to encourage you to continue working at home with your child every night. Your teacher is always willing to help steer you in the right direction if you need assistance with homework, tutoring suggestions or support. As always, I am available via email (jeasley@bpsbearcats.com) or phone (870-336-6583) to answer any questions.
A Few Reminders.....
Please send your student in weather appropriate clothes. If the wind chill is 33 and above and weather conditions are dry, we will be going outside.
Make sure you have your child's name in their jacket.
Remind your student to cover their mouth if they sneeze or cough....we want to reduce the amount of germs spread.
