I hope everyone is having a great summer!
I have had the chance to do some reading in my down time this summer. I have always loved to read, but in the past few years, I find that in the evenings I scroll through my phone instead of picking up a book. I've been thinking about our students, and the fact that screens are competing for their attention. This year, at West Oxford, we want to find balance between pixels and pages. I am looking for ways to create inviting spaces that make students want to curl up with a good book. I have boxes of new books for each classroom to ensure we have engaging classroom libraries. We are getting new furniture in the media center to inspire reading. And at my house, I am identifying times when I put the phone away and curl up on the couch or in the hammock to fall into my next read. As we prepare for the school year, would you join me in considering balance? Where are the spaces in your home that invite your child to curl up with a book? Could you identify screen free times when you prioritize books? Could you read books together as a family? Let's look for balance together.
Changes are happening at West Oxford! We have a new assistant principal. Dr. Sherria Grubbs comes to us from Northern Granville Middle School, where she has been the AP for five years. She has over thirty years of classroom and administrative experience, and is excited to return to elementary school, as she was a kindergarten and first grade teacher. We are so excited to have her on our team!

Summer Bridge for rising kindergarteners is Monday, July 22nd. We can't wait to see you there! I will have an optional parent information session for you after students go to class so both you and your students know what to expect.
Our car show is next Saturday, July 27th from 9:00-1:00. Please come out! Donate school supplies to participate in the car show, and bring your children for water play and other fun activities! There will be several food trucks.
Our open house is August 8th from 4:00-7:00. This is the time to meet your child's teacher, sign up for PTO, learn about buses, register for afterschool, and get ready for the year. Lawrence and Perry and Kona Ice will be on site that evening if you want to pick up dinner while you are here.
Our PTO is hosting a rummage and vender sale on August 24th from 8:00-12:00. If you are interested in participating, we are charging $25 per parking space. Please reach out to westoxfordelempto@gmail.com. We will set up a special section for venders who are children. We look forward to hosting you.
