PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
The weather continues to be extremely hot and I hope everyone found ways to beat the heat this weekend. Pershing will continue to operate under SDUSD's heat advisory protocol on Monday and Tuesday when temperatures are expected to be in the high 90s and possibly low 100s. Under the heat advisory protocol PE classes will be held indoors and during lunch cool zones with A/C will be open so student do not have to stay out in the sun. We are looking forward to cooler weather the rest of this week when this heatwave breaks on Wednesday. We still want to encourage families to send students to school with plenty of water and remind everyone there are drinking fountains and water bottle refilling stations throughout the campus.
Some families were asking if Pershing will be shifting to a minimum day schedule during this heat wave. Because we have working A/C units in nearly all classrooms we will continue on our regular schedule so as not to disrupt student learning. There are, however, some classrooms where the A/C units do not always work consistently. For those classrooms, portable A/C units, provided by the district, are being utilized to keep classrooms cool. If we find ourselves in a situation where an A/C unit stops working in a classroom, and no portable units are not available, we have a plan to shift students to rooms where the A/C is working.
On a completely separate note, I want to thank all the parents who offered to be representatives for SSC and SGT. We are so blessed to have a community with active and engaged parents. Please take a moment to select representatives for SSC and SGT (I apologize for the two separate links but the bylaws do not allow for one common ballot for both committees). Voting ends on Friday, Sept 13.

Did you know our Foundation generously purchased a wheel-chair accessbile lunch tables and additional bench seating to help meet the needs of our growing and diverse student population for this school year. This is an example of your Panther Pledge dollars at work - have you made your Panther Pledge?
Click here to take the Panther Pledge today!
Thanks in large part to a late surge by our 7th & 8th grade families we are less than $10,000 away from reaching our goal with just over a week left on the Panther Pledge. A reminder that the grade level with the most donations will earn early release for lunch for a two-week period. Currently our sixth grade class is in the lead but our seventh graders are less than 10 pledges away. The Panther Pledge ends soon. Please be sure to make your donation today!
What is the Panther Pledge?
The Panther Pledge is a suggest $75 donation that helps fund our Pershing Parent Foundation. If every student was able to raise $75 our Foundation would meet their fundraising goal for the entire year!
Your entire donation other than any PayPal fees goes directly to the Foundation, and helps pay for:
- 6th Grade Camp Scholarships
- 7th Grade Experience to Rockin' Jump Trampoline Park
- 8th Grade Promotion and End of the Year Activities
- Teacher Stipends for Class Enrichment Activities
- Teacher Appreciation
- Campus Beautification / Improvements
- Guest Speakers…and more!!!

PERSHING HUNGRY GAMES FOOD DRIVE CONTINUES
A reminder that the Pershing ASB is partnering with the San Diego Food Bank to support a year-long food drive. Students may bring donations of human and pet food and leave them in the red tubs outside the main office or by Room 305. For any specific questions please contact ASB Advisor Stacy Robe at srobe@sandi.net
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WEDNESDAY OFFICE HOURS
Pershing offers an extended window of time every Wednesday from 12:45-1:20 PM where students can seek individual help with a specific classroom teacher. Early assignments are showing in PowerSchool. Please encourage your child to go to office hours or homework help in the library to help keep them on track. The expectation is any student who has a C or lower in any class will attend office hours weekly for that class until the grade is a B or higher.
INTERNET CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN PRESENTATION ON SEPT 19 @6:00 PM
Pershing MIddle School in collaboration with the Pershing Foundation has invited our local law enforcement to host their Internet Crimes Against Children Presentation for any family in the Henry Cluster. The presentation will be held at 6:00 PM on September 19. You may attend in person in the Pershing Auditorium or online (Please see the ICAC flyer below for more details). Law enforcement provides some incredibly useful info for parents about the the things to watch out for as well and resources to help parents help their children navigate phones, social media, and the digital age we know live in. Pleases note this presentation is intended for adult audiences only. A separate age-appropriate presentation is being provided to students through their PE classes on Sept 12.
Our Boys and Girls Basketball and Track and Field Teams were off to a strong start during their first weekend of games.
Our Girl's Basketball Team ended the weekend 1-1 with a close victory 15-14 over Bell and a tough loss to Language Academy 14-11. They are well positioned for the remainder of the season. Our Boy's Basketball team ended the weekend 2-0 with victories over Language Academy 41-3 and Bell 31-17. They will be strong competitors this season.
Our Boys and Girls Track Teams also competed well. Final results had not been posted as of the writing of this newsletter but will be included next week.
If you have photos of our Panther Athletics in action at their MSA events please email them to mkray@sandi.net and we will try to include them in the newsletter.
