Greetings, Urbana Families and Friends,
I have received many questions from parents, staff, and community members regarding recent federal actions related to immigration enforcement and the impact of the Executive Orders recently issued by the federal government. In light of these developments, Urbana School District reaffirms its commitment to providing a high-quality education to all students.
The Illinois State Board of Education recently released the ISBE Regulatory Guidance on Immigration Enforcement for schools. We are adhering to this guidance and are equipping our administrators and office staff with the necessary tools to respond appropriately to inquiries from immigration officials. USD116 remains committed to protecting student information to the fullest extent permitted under the law.
If you or someone you know needs additional support or resources, please do not hesitate to contact your building principal or a bilingual parent liaison, who can connect you with the necessary resources. For further assistance, organizations such as the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Immigrant Justice: The Resurrection Project, ISBE, and, locally, The Refugee Center offer valuable information, resources, and support for families.
Our State Superintendent addressed school leaders regarding the concerns surrounding the recent Executive Orders and memos. State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders stated, “These actions do not require school districts to make any immediate changes at the board or classroom level. At this time, there have been no changes to federal legislation, regulations, or funding that would warrant a local response, and all Illinois state laws remain intact. In the meantime, I urge district leaders to continue normal operations. Thank you for your day-to-day leadership in providing a high-quality education to all Illinois students.”
As the leader of this amazingly diverse and culturally rich community, I am committed to following Dr. Sanders’ guidance, remaining consistent in our policies and practices, and complying with our legal requirements to protect students and staff from discrimination or harassment.
At Urbana School District, we are unwavering in our dedication to the well-being and dignity of every student and staff member. Our schools will remain safe environments where our students can learn without fear.
All my best,
Dr. Ivory-Tatum
